Nathan Chen

I had the same concern the moment I saw Vincent planned 6 quads at worlds. I only followed FS for less than 2 months, so idk, I honestly doubt if half of the top 4 today can still remain top 4 in 2022 when more juniors move to senior.

To me I don’t believe perfecting 5-6 quads with serious under rotation issue in such short time span can happen but he can prove me wrong. I did say Nathan needs to improve on his jumps and possibly adding something new.

But he said in interview that he had been practicing 6 quads everyday and was able to land them.

Good for him really, we’ll see when the season starts with all other added elements and other intangibles. Who knows with the possible rules change, he may only need 5 to win.

But he said in interview that he had been practicing 6 quads everyday and was able to land them.

I think the only reason he said so is to avoid criticism and questions from people like me as a merely follower. I could believe "he practiced 6 quads everyday" and even believe that he landed them "at different times of the day". But these 6 quads are likely to be under-rotated anyway.

As a perfectionist, I am annoyed by people who claim they could do certain things but in poor quality. Maybe that is my problem.

Regardless of what Vincent does Nathan and Raf know he can't just hope the other competitors stagnate. Plenty of other skaters underestimated Nathan and then watched helplessly as he leapfrogged over them. In the Canon interview Nathan says he will now focus on fundamentals in order to improve his technical, but that focus on fundamentals will translate into improvements in the other parts of his skating as well.

I honestly really only care about what Vincent does to the extent that it could affect Nathan's development. Like I said, I have no doubt that Nathan can keep up technically with anyone in the quad race if he wants to, but winning that quad race is not what I want him to be the most focused on in the next 4 years because of 1) potential injuries / the longevity issue and 2) I personally want him to devote time to becoming a complete skater. I'd hate for there to be an external pressure that forces him to have to continue being so quad-focused even when he is already tired of doing so many quads.

I still can't name even ONE rising star, honestly. Yuzuru was 18 when he's got his first Oly Gold. And during these 4 years, nothing changed, lol. Shoma, Nathan and Boyang grew up, yes, but they still were too young to have such GOE and PCs (talking about Olys). And Nathan failed his mental thing. So Yuzuru remained in Top-4.

Soooo if Nathan will continue he can probably get his 1st Oly Gold in 2022 cause he'll put his Pcs and goes and technique alltogether... though YALE... ugh :D nvm

___

Though of course Nathan didn't have a full quad pack in his 15. He's got his 4T, then 4S, then he was injured (hip) in the age of 16 but came back and gained 2 more quads...
I don't even know... Can we compare a 16 y.o. Nathan to the other boys his age atm? I'm not sure there are 16-18y.o. boys with FOUR consistent quads now. Am I wrong?

I found it interesting as I was watching some of the SOI group numbers that Nathan was adding a few flourishes of his own to the choreography.

For instance, at this point as everyone is doing a single turn he does a double

And at the beginning of this clip when everyone is turning backwards their left leg is held straight, while Nathan throws in a kick.

Yes I noticed it as well, that’s pretty cool of him to add his own moves. Hopefully he can benefit artistically by having some conversations with others on the SOI.

I have wondered if Nathan had 3-4 senior seasons under his belt, like Hanyu, would he still have had the same experience. Note: Sochi 2014 Men’s wasn’t pretty.

I saw some videos of Canadian Junior skater Stephen Gogolev, coached by Orser, seems pretty good and will be old enough for 2022.

new fan. he is super amazing

Hi and welcome. Did you see mini-Patrick in Nathan, as some fans seem to?

Was there a particular program, a particular moment / competition that won you over?

Is Nathan similar to the other skaters you've liked in the past, or does he buck the trend in some way?

Not that you asked, lol, but I've always been a fan of ladies skating. Even the pairs and dance couples I liked have usually grabbed my attention because the lady half (Cheng Peng, for example) is special to me in some way. Nathan's movements to me are more beautiful than even my favorite ladies', so he's the first male skater since Daisuke Takahashi who's really caught my eye.

Yes welcome colton 12314

i love both Vince and Nate, because they are driven, hard-working, intellegent and humble Chinese American figure skaters that I personally can relate to.
about Vincent, his quad jumps maybe UR in Worlds, but he is injured at the time. I kr Vincent can do clean quad jumps (all 4 types of them he mastered so far) in practice. It is not a chronic tech flaw for Vincent. mostly the UR are result of stamina issue, injury or nerves. Also, Vincent is consistently doing complete run-thrus on a daily basis which really impresses me. Quad jump wise, I prefer Nathan's quad lutz (beautiful use of true deep outside edge) than Vincent's. their flip is very similar, 4S is Vincent's first quad his most confident one, while Nathan's 4S is not as consistent as Nathan's other quads, Vincent just learned 4T and 4T is Nate's fav quad, Vincent 3A jump-off edge (I personally prefer), Nate 3A jump-off skid.
What really impressive about Nathan is his stamina, he can achieve 6 quads FS and nobody else can do it. Also his jumps technique not only textbook but looked quite beautiful to me, it is a feeling can I cannot explain exactly why. sometimes, Nathan's jump reminds me of Yuna's jump a bit. Also, Nathan is the only one who has landed 5 different kinds of quads in competition.
but I would not under estimate Vincent at all, instead What Vincent achieved within one year is as amazing as what Nate's improvement and trajectory. Also, Vincent's 6quad FS at worlds does not come out of no where, he had the ambition even at the beginining of this season. And Vincent's words that he can do clean 5 quads FS in practice is not fake, Vincent's fans have many videos of him doing clean 5 quads FS in practice.
Also, Nathan is 1.5 years old than Vincent. on more senior season in Nathan's belt.
Speaking of age, Yuzuru is born at Dec 1994, he was 19 years old at Sochi not 18.

Vincent's IN interview and his communication with fans all indicated that he is also trying to improve his components side of skating and aiming at becoming a whole package skater.

Nathan is now already a world champion, reputation is on Nathan's side comparing to Vincent. Nathan has the easy way at the moment.

artistic talent wise, I think Nathan is more naturally gifted in dance/musicality than Vincent. But Vincent is extremely focused on figure skating, which is his only goal/dream in life yet Nathan wish to juggle college and skating.

I don't know Nathan's game plan, he is so private and mysterious, but I secretly hope Nathan's figure skating can develop into the direction I hoped for him. but IDK.
As for Vincent, everything already planned out, he will train at colorado springs and aiming at 2022 OG

EDIT: a bunch of rambling, and I don't know what I just said.
EDIT: and yes, Love Nathan's little improvise in all his EXs. but hoped he can stick to original choreo in future competitions. Nathan can be a choreographer all he wants after his retirement. Now he still needs to absorb from others.

Especially since Nathan's loop technique is different than Shoma and Yuzuru (the other 4loop jumpers). They seem to be more natural edge jumpers and carry with them more speed/momentum going into the 4loop than Nathan's technique. I have a feeling Nathan's technique is probably even worse on the hip since it relies more on torque.

Not sure about Hanyu's 4L technique. But Shoma, come on, his 4L is often pre almost half circle and underrated almost another half circle. It always looks like 3L to me!

Whenever my little girl and I watched Shoma's quads, we had to watch some of Nathan's quads to rinse our eyes clean :)

The article mentions that Nathan is considering double-majoring in economics and pre-med.

wow - would that be econ and bio double major or Econ major plus the pre-med science requirements?

I feel like I’m having more in common with Nathan lately - haha - but econ major could be a great fit for him with his mathematical mind.

I don't know if he can handle even one major if he continues to compete. But he is Nathan.

Maybe Econ major would be easier than bio - at least it would be for myself.
If his goal is med school, bio or bioengineering major isn’t necessary anyways.

At one interview, he mentioned that his favorite subject in school is bio. I would think Econ is less time consuming - at least no labs, making it easier to be mobile/take some courses on-line if Yale allows.

Based on my understanding/gut feeling/six sense/intuition of Nathan Boi.
Med is a field more suited to him. he will become a terrific doctor and he will find his challenge and gratification . Business , I guess why Nathan is considering it is mostly to get some taste of the other side, but who knows, some times people comprise, and life is not always perfect...
