Nathan Chen

the Teams and Coaches, maybe you can start one for him there  It might move as fast as Nathan's FF

yyyskate being the one to start a Raf thread might be the biggest irony in human history [emoji23] [emoji23] [emoji23]

@colton12314 The base points he might lose in the reduction of points, he can get back in maximizing his GOEs since they’ll be increasing from +3 to +5 so if he executes well enough, he’ll still be able to reach records scores. I also honestly doubt the no repeat quad suggestion will go through, it’d be too advantageous to very few and too disadvantage to way too many.

I would like to share this video. It is My life. My favorite skater with one of my favorite songs. I watched it when it first came out with not more than 10 views, now it is 1631.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2E-f-sG4xg

My favorite part is at 1'44'' when it is changed from Prince Igor to the OG MLD, Nathan looks so delicate and beautiful, even a little bit vulnerable in that shot.

This smile is so precious. Need to post it again.

Well he’s an athlete, injuries happen all the time and you never know if one is gonna be career ending. I don’t read it as sad since I don’t think he’s planning on it happening (he seems to take care of his body very well), just that he knows it can and wants to have a safety net. I think he’s being conservative about 2022, he doesn’t wanna rule out anything.

Even if he doesn’t get injured, sports can only be played for so long. He’ll have like 60 other years of life he needs to account for like all other athletes.

Ah, what a great video! Very emotional. The song is just perfect for Nathan.

His tone seems to have changed since post OG, especially knowing all eyes are still on him for 2022. Instead of fully showing confidence in his speaking during the pre OG as a newbie who’s one step closer in fulfilling his dream and willing to share the ride with the media, and then witnessed the harsh reality, he now puts in more thoughts when he speaks to them. One thing I believe he’s learned is to tamed the media exaggerated talking points and the hype, understanding their careless words can be your friend or foe. Instead, show the confidence through action and performance. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have a Japanese/Russian Fed who can decide on the media access, he was faced with an open table media buffet, at 18. I do feel he loves the sport and will possibly contribute through a different outlet when he no longer competes. Like he said in OCR, he still has lots of to-do things he wants to accomplish in the sport for the next few years.
He’s young and has been taken a good care of himself, I can’t wait for what ahead of him and what he has planned.

Random but I just came across this recent Hanyu interview where he mentioned that he had to keep the state of his 4lo quite for Olympics from Raf because he’s a coach who calculates/maximizes points and he wanted to hold off Nathan. He said he didn’t want Raf to know of his plan [emoji23]

I thought that was a funny tidbit. He wasn’t really concerned about his other competitors as much points wise

It’s all very interesting, Raf had Mao/Brian had Yuna during their peak rivalry, now Raf has Nathan/Brian has Yuzu during this latest competitive rivalry. Soon it’ll be Marin/Eunsoo and possibly Evengia. Thanks for keeping skating fun & competitive Brian and Raf [emoji23]

So far the Olympics score card for Team Raf vs. Team Orser is 0:2 -:(.

I’m quite sure Mao was no longer with Raf when she had her first Olys (she didn’t make the age cut-off while she was with Raf).

IIRC, she was dominant in 2006 and would have been favored to win if not for the age thing.

Well Raf split with Mao in 2008 so he didn’t train her for Olympics. It’s too bad really because she was actually a bit ahead of Yuna during her time with Raf and had she stayed, probably would have at least stayed neck and neck but by 2009, Yuna got too ahead and Mao fell behind, her technique suffered, her programs weren’t that good anymore, her consistency was a problem. Yuna would have had to mess up real bad to lose the Gold 2010. Tarasova was not a good move for her, wrong coach for the wrong skater. I really wished Raf/Mao didn’t have the misunderstanding :(

I forgot also that Adam was with Orser before going to Raf. I thought his take on his time with Brian and with Raf was interesting (he was honest but complimentary of both). I really like both coaches, very different methods so you can tell what kind of personalities gravitate towards each by the skater but both try (and usually succeed) to get the best out of their students. They and their students keep skating fun.

I really want to see them compete against each other again. I will ignore the fans fighting in the background because it'll be so exciting. The last few times they've competed neither one has won both programs. Worlds 2017 and NHK back in the day Yuzu won both, but CoR, 4CC and the OG both won one part of it. I'm happy Nathan finally won a FS against him even if he didn't get a medal.

Judging purely by the Olympics record, Orser got 3 OMGs. Raf’s best result at the Olympics was #5, if I remember correctly.

Nathan won the FS over Hanyu in the 2016 GPF too. That’s when Nathan and the hype around him really blew up. I think Hanyu was like 5th in the short for Worlds 2017 right? So he didn’t win the SP but definitely won the FS with a world record.

But yea, I would like to see them compete again too. I think they both enjoy the competition and what each is bringing to the sport. I notice Hanyu doesn’t talk about Nathan as much as he does the other skaters and I always thought that’s because he’s his biggest competition. He’s usually more talkative about guys that aren’t as big of a threat lol. But they’ve both said some nice things and I like a little rivalry. It’s fun. It’s only the annoying extreme fans that ruin it a bit and make it like a life or death thing. It’s just skating, live a little jeez [emoji23]

No worries, Raf will add an Olympic Gold to his resume in 4 years and lay claim to the indisputable GOAT ;) [emoji38]

Just rewatching Nathan’s tiny weeny side angle appearance at DWTS, I couldn’t help but wonder if he picked up some choreography for his next EX or sSP/FS programs, that would be fun 😃 Why wasn’t Jason seated with them... too bad.

I forgot about GPF 2016. I don't know how since that's around when I first noticed him. I guess since the veterans did so poorly then and the youngins saved the day, so I didn't think to count it. So he has two FS wins.

Worlds 2017 Hanyu did beat Nathan by a point or so in the SP I believe if he was 5th or so. But regardless, I'd love for both to skate clean and see what happens. :drama: I'll have a bunker ready.

And Raf really needs an OGM. I want to see his reaction.
