2022 is still years away - so who knows what will happen with Nathan and Raf. Not trying to start anything here, but we really don’t know if Raf will still be Nathan’s coach.

Yes, it is quite long time. But, for me, i just focus on the present
They work pretty well, and it shows good results. However, no one can declare the future. I agree with.

Trying to pit him picking Yale to support pure speculation of him wanting to distant himself from Raf is quite far reaching but hey, we probably reach another 100+ pgs just on Raf good or bad for Nathan. The joy Nathan has for Yale is shared by many others who don’t have Raf as coach, that’s pure college bound joy I see. I sense for him to finally go back to school in realtime, make new friends and explore new things at a school like Yale makes him happy, with or without all the other things. Yes, anything can happen, he may decide he loves college more than preparing for 2022, take a year off to compete or stays with Raf until the end.

4 years isn’t long for an professional athlete.

I agree Nathan is THE ONE for Raf. But did Nathan feel that Raf was THE ONE coach for him? I could totally see Plush and Yagudin felt that way about Mishin and Tarasova. Not so sure about Nathan.

Like, Yes? With a capital? LOL I don't know in how many interviews/press conferences he has either said he's sticking with Raf or he's not getting a new coach since the Olys. Or even through the whole Marina drama.

In the discussion with Heyheyhey, the One meant a whole lot more than just the chosen coach/student relationships. The examples used were Plushy and Yagudin. Plushy and Yagudin didn’t need to answer similar questions about Mishin and Tarasova. Because everybody knew they found the One. For Nathan to be asked and answer these questions is pretty telling.

Being a new fan, I learned about the Marina episode, the family episode, the Russian interview etc afterwards. I don’t want to take side. There is no side to take. They should have been on the same side. In other words, if Natha felt Raf is the One, not sure these episodes would take place.

Yagudin and Plushenko were not going to college and planning long distance relationships with their coach, why would they be asked any questions regarding that? The only reason Nathan is asked if he’s staying with Raf is because of his decision to go to Yale, obviously there is curiosity on how this will work. To me, that he’d rather try a long distance relationship to balance school and working with Raf when it would be so much easier for him to just get another coach altogether speaks volumes to me. He’s making it harder for himself when he doesn’t have for the sake of working with him. Same with Raf.

Also Yagudin was actually Mishin’s student for a long time along with Plushenko, he left him because of the competition with Plushenko was too strong so he went to Tarasova. He got a lot of flack for it at the time and it wasn’t like people were thinking this is the greatest match made in heaven. People thought he was making a mistake. It’s only when it’s all said and done that he’s considered her ONE.

When I say “the one”, it’s not even really about how the coach or skater feel about each other but the fact that that skater and that coach will be the defining ones for each no matter who else they go to. Michelle had so many coaches after Frank and Frank so many students, but it doesn’t matter, Frank will always be remembered for coaching Michelle and Michelle will always be remembered as the student of Frank. Same with Mishin and Tarasova which is why I used those examples, they will always be linked with those students first and foremost and vice versa for the students. They’re “the one”. Regardless if Nathan or Raf move on from each other, they will be considered the defining coach and defining student for each other because of their history and success together. I hope I’m making sense.

I for one would be totally open to Nathan getting another coach to help him address areas which many—including myself—feel Raf has not been able to do in the years they’ve been together. But at the same time there’s no denying Raf had a critical role in developing him during his formative years. Also, like it or not Nathans’s own choice to stick with a Raf does speak volume. He is very intelligent and super technical, and we would be silly to think that he doesn’t know what he’s doing when he makes conscious choices like going back to Raf after training with Marina and feeling he wasn’t getting enough help on his technique in Canton. Clearly he himself sees great value and importance of Raf’s coaching.
