Nathan Chen

I couldn't find any video of this...where can I see it:luv17:
Good question indeed... I do think any official streams showed this as they usually show kiss&cry when next skater warms up, need to look through some russian records may be. I'd love to see this moment again :)

Well Raf split with Mao in 2008 so he didn’t train her for Olympics. It’s too bad really because she was actually a bit ahead of Yuna during her time with Raf and had she stayed, probably would have at least stayed neck and neck but by 2009, Yuna got too ahead and Mao fell behind, her technique suffered, her programs weren’t that good anymore, her consistency was a problem. Yuna would have had to mess up real bad to lose the Gold 2010. Tarasova was not a good move for her, wrong coach for the wrong skater. I really wished Raf/Mao didn’t have the misunderstanding :(

I forgot also that Adam was with Orser before going to Raf. I thought his take on his time with Brian and with Raf was interesting (he was honest but complimentary of both). I really like both coaches, very different methods so you can tell what kind of personalities gravitate towards each by the skater but both try (and usually succeed) to get the best out of their students. They and their students keep skating fun.

Adam was briefly mentioned in this new article about Orser and Evgenia. Seems that Orser is going to make her the next Yuna.

"differences in training philosophy" was the reason cited for Rippon Orser split

Mao/Raf split was in 2008, Yuna and Orser in 2010. It was such an ugly split which Orser still cannot get over with.

As to Nathan and Yuzuru, it seems that Japanese media is so obsessed with Nathan. To me Nathan has been analyzed more in Japanese media than in US, even Shoma at one interview said something like he always find Nathan when it was something about Yuzuru, which is kind of funny to him

I forgot about GPF 2016. I don't know how since that's around when I first noticed him. I guess since the veterans did so poorly then and the youngins saved the day, so I didn't think to count it. So he has two FS wins.

Worlds 2017 Hanyu did beat Nathan by a point or so in the SP I believe if he was 5th or so. But regardless, I'd love for both to skate clean and see what happens. :drama: I'll have a bunker ready.

And Raf really needs an OGM. I want to see his reaction.

I think he really wants an OGM with Nathan. He never struck me as a coach that’s desperate for the gold or anything mainly because he’s realistic about his students and their abilities and sets his expectations accordingly. Most of his students like Abt, Ashley, Adam, he helped them get as much success as they could with the talent they had in comparison to their competition but he knows they’re not OGM athletes. With Mao, is was disappointing to him (and devastating for her) that they changed the age limit right when she had her best shot at the gold.

But with Nathan, he knows he has THE one. Like Frank with Michelle, Mishin with Plushenko, Tarasova with Yagudin, those students that will undeniably be the hallmark of that coaches career regardless of how many other Olympics golds they win with other skaters. So I think even if he could win with anybody else, he really wants it with Nathan. You can tell his hunger/ambition for it from interviews. This is in one way where I think Raf is a good match for Nathan. I don’t think anyone wants the gold for Nathan (other than Nathan himself) as much as Raf wants it for him because he knows his capabilities. He knows and values what he has in his hands in Nathan and I can appreciate that quality. That’s a good thing to have on your side.

2022 is still years away - so who knows what will happen with Nathan and Raf. Not trying to start anything here, but we really don’t know if Raf will still be Nathan’s coach.

Yes I know, my Olympic comment was in jest. It’s not meant to be taken seriously, that’s why I added the emojis [emoji23]

This is what I am guessing why he is not that happy about Nathan going to college not close by, especially the Ivies, which to him, might be what the family wants Nathan to do, and is the source of his complaints/frustration in those interviews when he talked about Nathan's family, especially the one after OG when he mentioned that Nathan wanted to dedicated to his family. As I said before, I got this impression when I think about the Raf and Nathan's interviews around CoR.

The frustration is understandable, which must be hard for every coach to cope with.

But it IS Nathan's life, he is the one to decide how to live his life to the fullest.

@heyheyhey, why your posts always have that title bar?

I agree Nathan is THE ONE for Raf. But did Nathan feel that Raf was THE ONE coach for him? I could totally see Plush and Yagudin felt that way about Mishin and Tarasova. Not so sure about Nathan.

Nathan did mention before that attending UC Irvine would be an easier option for continuing to train with Raf - and turns out the new facility is in the same city. Perhaps Raf was supportive of this option ?

From: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.me...kate-champions-like-the-look-of-stanford/amp/

‘Nathan, though, said UC Irvine might be a better fit because the school is located near his coach Rafael Arutunian. He added that he hopes to continue skating at the international level while studying microbiology.’

I am also not convinced Nathan sees Raf as ‘The One’ - we will see what happens ...

I am proud of Nathan for making the less safe choice of moving far away from his coach to attend his dream college.

Yea, if anyone wants to hear Adam talk about his experience with both and why he left Orser and went to Raf, just check out his interview with TSL.

Nathan is Hanyu biggest competition so that’s probably why plus the press there seem to really emphasize quads so naturally, the quad king probably would get a lot of press attention. I always get the feeling that neither Hanyu nor the Japanese media consider Shoma much of a threat to Hanyu. Like he’s the little brother that won’t ever overtake the big brother until he retires kinda thing lol. Maybe that’s why they focus on Nathan more as well.

I don’t know that I get the sense he’s unhappy about Nathan going to college. I think he’s being supportive as he can but in that parental kinda of way where they think the child is in over their head but will go along with it anyway because they love them lol. College seems Nathan’s choice rather than anything he’s being pushed to do by family. I think Raf’s frustration from OG was really more frustration on Nathan not listening to his coach rather than frustration at his family. It seemed more directed to Nathan to me and something they needed to work on which according to him since Worlds, they have.

Really? One thing he’s being extremely consistent about it how much he wants Raf to stay as his coach. It’s something that stood out to me recently, like he seems really loyal to Raf that I actually wouldn’t doubt that Nathan also feels that way. If anything I get a stronger sense from Nathan than I do from Raf. He doesn’t even entertain the idea of going to another coach for Yale and when that whole Marina stuff happened, he was adamant that Raf has been and is his only coach (ouch to Marina).

Who knows, even with long time partnerships they may not last but I think for now they’re pretty loyal to each other. Time will tell.

I am not saying he is not happy Nathan going to college. I wasn't quite clear in the previous post and made modification afterwards. Indeed he is as supportive as he can be. To me he probably hopes Nathan would attend somewhere close or an online program which would help to focus on skating, like most of other athletes do.

Just my speculation/wild guess

Yes, that is what Nathan keeps saying and I have no doubt his sincerity in saying that. But he is just a 19 year old, who knows what he thinks in several years? He probably has no idea he was so into Yale before the Bulldog days. I remembered that Nathan said in one interview, he doesn't even know what will happen next month.

Absolutely, things can change. We saw that with Michelle and Frank and recently with Evengia/Eteri. Nothing is guaranteed. I just mean for right now, currently, they both seem adamant they want to stick it out together for the foreseeable future.

I agree. And prior to Bulldog Days - Nathan had not visited Yale before. But seems he instantly fell in love ❤️🐶.

Yes, you have a very prominent title bar/headline, I don't know what is called actually, something like this:

Nathan Chen
------------------

on the top of almost every of your posts.

Didn't you notice the differences? At one point this morning, I was wondering if something wrong with my setting until hhh mentioned about it in one of her posts.

Oh my lol. I’ve been using the GS app for the last couple days instead of the webpage so I had no idea lol. I just checked now and yea, I do have a HUGE headline that says Nathan Chen. I have no clue why or how, maybe because I’m using the app? Idk so strange [emoji23] [emoji23] [emoji23]
