Nathan Chen

He did 2 4t’s in land of all... wow. Why Nathan why? I have a feeling he’s using these shows as a practice run in place of the B completions that he’ll likely have to skip and that’s why he’s actually attempting quadS and 3a.

Oh, whoops, you're right. He did another 4T instead of a second 3F. Even more impressive!

He made a doughnut spin. If I remember correctly, he has never done it in his senior years? He always sticked to half-bielmann, right?

I really don't remember all the details of his spins in the programs but it really seems to me like he hasn't done a single dougnut spin in his senior years... If so, Im happy! (correct me if he has done it actually)

I'm happy anyway, cause 2 days ago I saw him doing a doughnut spin in his junior program and was like "If only he'd do it nowadays!"

He was practicing it in sun valley. The gif again https://drive.google.com/open?id=1h1nB1nH47kr7bguTlTn2i1JDLT6qv42w:biggrin:

I have same feeling too. Especially he put all 7 jumps in a barely 3 1/2 minutes program.

I think he may have put the 2nd 4t in because he botched the first one. He skated Land Of All for the evening show but I haven't found reports of his layout yet.

ETA: I've found one report that says he landed 4t, 3lo, 3f, 3a, 3z, 3t, 3s.

I'm still going thru tweets of the evening show and it sounds like Nathan caused a minor scandal by giving Mai a hug from behind. LOL

This thread goes pretty quickly and I don’t know where things are so I’m sorry if this is disrupting the flow.... but I just want to say Nathan ruffling Shoma’s hair was so adorable :luv17:

The short entry eagle-3A.

As 3A becomes an easy jump for him. Nathan could be the one to land a 4A by the next Olympic. For quads, his rotation speed is the fastest and his air position is the best.

Let's not get carried away here. I'm sure he'll be glad to just have the 3A be a solid and consistent jump. Besides, points wise a 4A is not really worth attempting except for bragging rights.

And this is not the first time he’s done 3A off of a spread eagle - he did it in Le Corsaire and had problems with it later on still. And to be honest the 3A doesn’t have a lot of lift compared to other men. I always wondered why this jump seems to be such a difficult one for him when all his other jumps are so easy looking.

A reliable/easy 3A would be super - and it seems to have gotten more consistent

Not sure about 4A :p

I wonder if he is performing a full jump layout in these shows because Raf is there. They may be using the shows as valuable, in person training time.

4Tstepout, 3loop, intricate in-betweens, 3turn+3flip, spread eagle+3A, here maybe the stsq which he only showed simplified/truncated version //// second half//// 4T, 3lz, 3Sstepout, choreo sequence, spin, spin.

seems is 4 jumps in first half and 3 jumps in second half (maximum for new rule )

about Costume, Nathan may look at Shoma's costume. Shoma has short legs and worse body proportions than Nathan. but his current costume make him look good. Shoma's moonlight sonata costume collar back is a bit lower than usual that is what I meant by lower back design.
Nathan's shoulders are bit a rounded (instead of beautiful squared shoulder line like Shoma or Kolyada) and has lots of back muscles (to pull those quads), with more neck and back exposure in costume design, will make his upper-body image much more balanced and visually compensate for hunched posture (be it is real or just visually).
All these is just about costume cut, could be achieved without any bling/crystals etc.

and this is the reason, why I support a simple T-shirt if cannot figure out costumes. because a short sleeve T-shirt is visually compensating and flattering Nathan's shape and lines than his current LoA costumes. although a cleverly designed real costume would be better.

Just give me a soft T shirt and be done with it. In black, even. No bling, no fuss.

Actually, I'd still complain if it's loose and baggy like the one he wore for Worlds 'No good.'

To dress to advantage should be among the easiest things to achieve, compared to learning even a double axel. But it's his life, and I can get my aesthetic pleasure from watching other skaters. It's just that the way he moves when he skates is so beautiful and no other skater is like him, in the sense that their unique beauty is different from what Nathan can do at his best, and I want to see him at the top of *his* aesthetic game while I still can.

I am preparing for another season of self-choreo gala or Nemesis--because when is he going to have time to visit a choreographer for a new gala? Adam is too busy with his newfound fame. This prospect... another season of Nemesis as gala or a new self-choreo gala (not BFTE in that costume again please!) I'll come to accept... as long as it's skated in the Nemesis black shirt and black pants.

Even if he fixed his posture, a stiff, bunched up shirt would botch the whole impression. But I'm happy to see that his posture in Osaka The Ice Land of All (from the wonderfully prompt update by AboutNathan) is much more to my liking compared to Sun Valley.

about men's forced donut spin, you know we has a nickname for it;)

I think Nathan just grabbed his John Wilson blades from behind, it is not like the round delicious donut he can do when he was a baby. but still, kudos to him for attempting.

also, seems all the spins Nathan is doing in the show (both sp or lp) is not the competition lv version.

I prefer this version to the childhood donut. It has its own aesthetic beauty, and I encounter it less often. It truly looks good in itself--this is how it's meant to look. It doesn't look like a less-than-wonderful donut by a skater who lacks the necessary flexibility to do a good donut.

yes, actually, this one Nathan is doing should not be called donut spin,
it reminds me of a grab blades from behind position that Caroline Zhang did before, also unique, here She grabbed the blade from a bend-leg lay-over camel position (which Nathan also can do when he was a baby) and transition up to a full round donut spin. the moment before the donut is the position Nathan is doing rn. the position is beautiful in its own way, and grabbed my attention back then.
