Nathan Chen

Meet Nathan Chen

Perfect timing for the men's short program. That story about his mom counting double axels on her fingers was so cute. Good luck Nathan! Hoping for a clean Nemesis today (even if the change in layout makes me nervous)!

Seemed kind of tentative but he got the job done. I'm still not sure what Nathan's ailment is. Ankle? Flu? Different commentators are saying different things. I'm inclined to believe he's recovering from the flu or cold, which is why he mentioned it in his teleconference. I hope he plays it smart and skates conservatively in the FS, too.

ETA:
In this article it mentions his illness.

He said on IN that he was sick beforehand and didn't feel like he got the training time he needed so they decided to play it safe with a jump that has a higher percentage.

To me, that makes what he did tonight all the more impressive. I don't know how it bodes for the long program in terms of stamina, but I really thought he was going to do poorly tonight and he fought through it.

He honestly should just do his US International Classic layout minus the loop. Do a flip, a toe - maybe one other quad if you feel up to it. You've proven yourself, dude.

I wish he wasn't so fixated on the quads. But I guess for him to swap the 4L out for 4T is a good sign that he's at least willing to compromise. Occasionally.

I was so stressed watching the Men live, it's like 1000x worse than watching at home because you can't screech and clutch pillows. I don't know how I will survive the FS with my dignity. The SLC layout would be lovely to see, especially if he's still under the weather.
Rewatched Mao's Last Dancer this week and it will be just so beautiful to see the translation on the ice.

More on Nathan's new look

“We took quite a long time designing the costume, making sure it matched the program,” Chen said. “And it was a really fun process getting to work with Vera and her whole team; I didn’t realize there were so many people behind her designs, so it was really cool to be able to have that experience. The costume felt great on the ice.”

Also new was his haircut. Chen sported a shorter ‘do after chopping his curly locks.

“The curl is gone but I guess that makes me more aerodynamic, so that’s alright.”

“You should grow it back if it’s making you more aerodynamic,” quipped competitor Rippon.

about Nathan's new costume
first impression so ugly, so Vera Wang (the part I do not like, I do appreciate some of her work tho).
Okay, It does has a quality look on ice. the texture/cloth used is premier, you can feel it right away.
Also, it indeed showed Nathan's lines on ice quite well. Also, Nathan has a good body shape in this suit (I think it looks like a onesie that frogman wears ) The issue is with the long sleeves it covered Nathan's hand movement.
You should noticed already that in this outing Nathan's spin has lots of new hand flourish moves, but were not as effective due to the long sleeves COVERED it (Nathan's sincere dedication to ART:biggrin: wasted)...

Also, the white strip on Nathan's chest, is NOT flattering. makes his chest(no no no it is his tummy) protruding in certain angle.

I do think the new short, sleek and simple hair cut is a match/combo with this new costumes tho.

But Nathan is Nathan Boi, NOT Evan lysacek.

Nathan has his own unique personality and his UNIQUE body (very sexy nonetheless).

My take on the new costume.

I think overall, curls+sleeve up shirt is better. Just not look as expensive (or Vera Wang Expensive or Should I say "Elegant" that kind feel every US socialite desperately wanted for their wedding )

Echo this "Nathan is better off naked" #NathanNoCostumeChen

I agree the materials are good quality and show off his lines well. Doesn't seem to go well with Nemesis but I think it could actually go well with Parachute.
