Nathan Chen

Well if he can get vaccinated in time (which I'm not sure if he will, though some of my friends in SoCal have already gotten theirs without pre-existing conditions), I don't see anything wrong with competing at the WTT. He doesn't have school this year and it's not a bad idea to have one more competition under his belt before the Olympics. And I can't help but wonder if he misses traveling and competing. I know that's what I'm gonna do the first thing after I get vaccinated!
He wouldn't be able to get it in time unless he got the Johnson right when he gets back. It might be easier for nathan to get vaccinated in Utah than California

Ah, you are right. I forgot it's already the end of March and WTT is coming up in 2 weeks.

California opened Covid vaccines to coaches, trainers and other supporting staffs in early March. So he might already get or will get it as soon as his returning from Sweden. A single shot of Pfizer vaccine is 80% effective in preventing infection according to cdc studies. So whichever shot he gets will give him protection going to Japan.

Also why has no one mentioned Nathan's new entrance into the 4S?? When did this jump get so good for him?? That was honestly the most beautiful jump for me in the entire program.
I mentioned it a few pages back, when I first noticed it in practice footage (he added an inverted mohawk, which he actually used to do in Juniors for his 3S, so it's not entirely new for him).
Also Mark Hanretty mentioned it in the ISU commentary (www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgpplKJfyc4&list=PLuiPiC1Hk8eJm8ld5aJrIWxfvmFl0E_BR&index=14&t=100s)
And I believe Jackie took notice of it as well, in one of his tweets?

It used to be my heart was in my throat until the last jumping pass. 1111bm, this is not exaggeratin lol.
You don't wanna know how I feel whenever he skates. A friend of mine just er... 'implied', that it's not exactly normal to be this nervous for a stranger/figure skater, so thank you for sharing that. 😅
I actually waited for the last group to be over, checked the results and then watched everything 'at peace'.

(I also hate it when everyone says that Nathan is so consistent and that you never have to worry when he skates... 🤯 It's not like he never makes mistakes, it's just that many have that perception of him always being unfazed or sth.)

Awww Russian fans lurrrves him. I've also been enjoying the Youtube comments under the Russian Eurosport video of his FS. He's so adored and admired. ....all the while we have gotten zero footage of his FS from NBC. No wonder FS is dying in the US.
They didn’t even upload his GPF free skate from 2019 to youtube and instead chose to show Hanyu’s from the same competition. Not to mention their forever irritating commentary.

I wonder why NBC isn't uploading his free. His videos usually bring in a lot of views, so it is a choice. Maybe it has something to do with music rights?

Sorry for starting another post

The Raf interview has been translated by our Russian speaking fans

Nathan is on Next Shark news again. Last time was his win at Nationals

Of all the things Raf said, this one resonated with me...so true.
Actually I think it's not reasonable to visit an expensive restaurant when you have only one hundred bucks in your pocket. You will not enjoy the visit being too busy calculating if you have enough money to leave tips or not.

That interview caused quite a ruckus this morning... :ROFLMAO: Thought it was pretty interesting he said he wasn't surprised he fell but Nathan was.

And TSL was fun simply for Todd Eldredge being on it talking about Nathan if anyone wants to give it a listen. There is no shady comments at all in it.

They can complain about the Shae top, his hunchy shoulders, stiff knees ( which they have done in the past). Of course none of which matter. I don’t see hunchy shoulders and his knees can’t be that stiff if he can land all those quads. I do agree about the Shae top. Or they can just not talk about Nathan at all, which they sometimes do. They’ll probably spend all their time tearing up Vincent, whom they dislike more than Nathan.

I think having Todd Eldridge being so positive about Nathan didn’t give them any openings to say negative things about Nathan. They did try to solicit things from Todd (e.g. should Nathan be changing his jump layout, leading to the 4Lz fall, but Todd just said it depends on how the skater feels. So no chance to trash Nathan there.) Todd was the only one saying positive things about Nathan. Dave & Jonathan did not say one word about how good Nathan was in the FS.
I really enjoy hearing Todd’s take on things. First hand knowledge from a former champ.

They did try to get Todd to say something negative about Nathan's spins, though.

Regarding the 4F, I think they've been working hard to bring it up to the 4T level of consistency, which is perhaps why they haven't spent as much time on the 4Lz.

I mean they really tried though - they refused to acknowledge Nathan's artistry and kept egging Todd on about "re-calibrating' component marks" - good thing Todd was there to have some actual semblance of objective recap of events.

Todd is a chill, knowledgeable, and level-headed guy. I enjoyed this episode (my usual grudge with TSL notwithstanding).

I suspect that the reason Raf said they hadn't trained the 4Lz as much was for Nathan's health's sake. In the past seasons there were multiple times where he had to take a break from the lutz, presumably to recover from some sort of injury or minor wear and tear associated with this jump (2017 post worlds, 2018 Nats/pre-Oly, 2020 Nats). On the other hand, those 4Lzs in worlds practice looked too good to be undertrained. Maybe I shouldn't trust Raf hehe.

Both Nathan and Jason would be on WTT team. WTT news on Japanese TV

Agree. Added to your list is 2019 post worlds, he took out both 4lz and 4f with the reasoning of recovery of his body. He also mentioned in an interview about preparation for worlds that with increased training volumes, he needs to be careful to avoid getting injured.

But I believe Raf’s word, “limited” in Raf’s standard 😂

So he did consider swapping the order of the first two jumps after the 4lz mistake in SP. Guess it did not work well so he switched back.

Bonita, thanks for posting that BBC video, I really liked their commentary. It does seem like commentators in other countries were more effusive in their praise than those in Nathan’s home country. Although I do think Terry Gannon truly appreciates Nathan’s overall impact on the sport, maybe because his sports expertise isn’t limited to figure skating.
