Nathan Chen

Thank you very much penniavaswen and sheetz :2thumbs: , I really wanted to see that commercial, I love seeing Nathan with the Corsaire suit and how they show the hard training he has to do to get to those beautiful presentations :points: (many people mistakenly believe that skating is easy)

I hope it's only my impression, but I thought Nathan was tired (Please give the boy a break, he needs to gather all his energy) :bed:

They had him live-ready since at least 5am PST, so I give him a pass! Nathan also says in the segment that they are leaving on Saturday for Korea.

This was obviously filmed pre-Vera, so I can just imagine explaining to all the four-year fans in my life why his costume is different at the Olympic Games (and hair, though I doubt they would be so observant, ha). Good thing the Corsaire costume is also black!

ETA: I think this was pretty tastefully done, especially being shown for the Superbowl and the worries that it'd be made extra macho for "manly" appeal. I personally didn't think the hockey team was 100% necessary, but given the context, I won't be super picky that some of the air time was diverted.

That fancy John Wilson black blades, That James Brown "The Boss" intro, That black hoody, That delicate long fingers.

A figure skater instantly stands out among a group of hockey skaters.

Still Manly tho. (Nathan BOI's setting is still there:biggrin: no worries)

it was really great concept. That intro is fab. and the intertwine of Nathan's very masculine off-ice weight training with his elegant on-ice impression.
The mix of sequins/laces, delicate long fingers with his black hoodies, boyish grin.

Ultimate manhood in a different package (understated, cool, elegant, cute, swagger and pocket size),

that is exactly what men's figure skating represented by Nathan BOI.

Glad this commercial is NOT a collage of his quad jumps.

Loving the Superbowl Ad for Nathan! It certainly shows the grittier side of skating. And I do like the respectful bumps from the hockey players at the beginning. :)

the artistic direction of the ad maybe:
Last hockey session is finished, now is figure skater Nathan BOI's turn to take the ice. and BOI has "Paid the cost to be the boss", through showing his staged falls (shout out to BOI's stunt double) and off-ice training (ya know, every time I show Nathen BOI's fluff to my dude friends, the only thing they noticed is that monstrous weight training BOI can handle). which is of course a contrast to (and inevitably leads to) his on-ice elegance and star persona.

…That delicate long fingers.

Haha, I noticed those too… like, my hands are already dainty, but his look even more fine-boned, so now I’m left with hand envy too, as if his skating skills weren’t enough…:drama:

I personally didn't think the hockey team was 100% necessary, but given the context, I won't be super picky that some of the air time was diverted.

I honestly don’t get the point of the hockey team… :scratch2::laugh:

Are people honestly not aware of this?? I mean, skaters are seen falling during competitions all the time, so… also, anyone who’s ever been ice skating recreationally should have in inkling…

Also: I’m sorry, but those falls in the Ad look so fake! :rofl2:

The skating portion they showed was cool, could have used more stepwork though. :)

My cynical mind says: the hockey team fistbumping and eventually watching Nathan is meant to show American football watchers that it is not unmanly to appreciate good figure skating. :sarcasm:

My more generous mind says: Nathan has a background in hockey and it's nice they acknowledge his interest (and his brother's) in another Winter Olympic sport. After all, basketball and ballet [e: and skateboarding] might not lend themselves so seamlessly.

Also, am mildly curious if they got any actual Team USA hockey players for the commercial (esp since the pros are out at this Games).

It's probably more this one, to appeal to the dudebros watching the Super Bowl. But even if one kid watching this ad decides that figure skating is a boss sport and decides to try it out, then I don't even mind the tailoring of the ad to appeal to that particular demographic. Plus, it's a great ad.

Not sure if it was intentional but I kind of like the fistbumping because it reminds me of the days when Nathan used to fistbump with Raf after getting off the ice.

Nathan has been announced as part of the cast of The Legends, a show which takes place on the Friday before his SOI shows in Osaka at the same arena. It is also being produced by IMG, but the cast is smaller than SOI's with only singles skaters performing. Along with Nathan the only international skaters currently scheduled to appear are Plushy, Javi, and Patrick.

Not sure why they didn't clear the ice after the hockey players in that commercial. It's like, no wonder he's falling so much. (and I know it's a stunt double, it's still kinda ironic that they don't show a zamboni clearing the ice and making it super nice for Nathan  )

Well, they didn’t shy away from the costuming part of FS and chose to show Nathan in his gorgeous , lacey top, so that's great.

…and how they show the hard training he has to do to get to those beautiful presentations… (many people mistakenly believe that skating is easy)

I thought about this some more, and I guess most people wouldn’t expect the amount of strength you need for the tech part of figure skating (not just jumps, but also spins) and the forces involved, because initially it may look like it’s more about being nimble and skillful…?
(I mean, obviously every speed and agility-based type of sport requires power, which would include hockey as well… but it may not be as apparent in figure skating… same thing would be true for gymnastics f.i.)

That is so true! Shouldn't even be called "ice" anymore, freshly ploughed field is more like it... :rolleye:

I agree with @penniavaswen about the possible reason why using hockey players in this ad. Also, Nathan trains in a cold Hockey rink. The plot:biggrin: could be just after a hockey session (Zamboni time could be too long for the 1min limit of Instagram:biggrin:), Nathan BOI took the center ice. And of course, his virtuoso is so MANLY that even hockey players (arguably one of the most manly sports ever) would admire  Those hockey players in the AD may be just some local hockey athletes trained in lakewood.

But I got to say that intro, focus on Nathan's fancy figure skating blades among all the hockey skates (with the background music "the boss"), is so genius! LOVE it.

And Nathan BOI's fingers has already became an internet sensation, Its GIF, videos, screenshot is popping up in all social medium platforms.

Yeah I loved the sparks that came from sharpening the blade. It was like he was blacksmithing or something. :)
