This season, Nathan's FS music choice has been attacked by some construed haters not only the anti-China campaign against him a couple months ago on Chinese social media (already died down). Also during his GP, one male journalist repeatedly asked about his FS music choice with impure intention. Lots of Chinese figure skating fans and Nathan's fans have sensed that, and felt to defend Nathan and his FS music choice. Like I said before, Nathan's FS is LOVED by Chinese figure skating community even more than his SP.
I think Nathan BOI should be prepared for similar evil-intent questions about his FS music choice during OG. Since, if there is not some politics involved, it is not a normal OG. Also, just be prepared for questions about his FS music/artistry in general.
I decided to translate my music/artistic direction analysis of his FS (written in Chinese initially) and post on this fan thread.

Nathan’s FS may indeed has some narrative arch or is story telling (as opposed to a complete abstract piece), (Nathan has mentioned to his Japanese fanclub and other occasions, he wishes to tell the story of that movie thru his performance..), After I watched the movie, combined with program choreography and Nathan’s interpretation, I think the narrative arch/structure is pretty clear. Have read other fans’ feeling about Nathan’s FS, many happen to share the same view. Indeed, a great program/performance, does not need lengthy harangue, it speaks for itself and will leave an unforgettable impression.
On the other hand, the feature of a great program is exactly that the more you watch it, the more flavorsome. The following is my personal understanding of Nathan’s FS — Mao’s Last Dancer.
This program music is composed/edited from 3 major pieces of music: 1. brush dance, 2 the rite of spring, 3 village dance and finale. All music pieces have appeared in the movie, “brush dance” and “village and finale” are original sound tracks composed by Christopher Gordon, “the rite of spring” appeared in the movie as a significant(plot wise) ballet piece that the main character Li danced to.

However, narrative structure wise, I think there are 4 parts.

First part is the entirety of music “brush dance”, from opening pose to the start of stsq(the rite of spring) 0:00-1:22, In the movie, the majority of the dances performed by Li is ballet(mostly classic), except for this “brush dance”, which is an original dance infused with Chinese dance flavor/element (could say it is one variety of modern ballet), In terms of music, not only incorporated authentic Chinese traditional instrument(such as plucked string instruments: pipa lute(琵琶),zither(古筝),percussion-stringed instrument: yangqin(扬琴) etc. all of which are staple of Chinese traditional music instruments) as the accompany acoustic. The melody part mostly played by western instrument Cello was also played and sounded very Chinese. It feels like a mimic to the lingering/void atmosphere/sound (走手音) that created by sliding on the strings of Chinese instrument guqin (古琴). What is genius of Lori’s choreo and Nathan’s interpretation is that intentionally left blank/void music space was either filled with Nathan’s blade sound (such as that little waltz jump transition

All together, it created an image of an innocent young boy, who just started his fragile attempt to explore the outside world (which is the instinct of humanity). The Chinese root/blood of the boy is also obvious (through Chinese music style). Nathan’s dance style in this part felt quite Chinese as well, reminds me of Chinese classic dance or Taiji at times.
Mao’s last dancer’s author usually describes his childhood situation and the reality of then China under Culture revolution as “a frog in a well”. Quote from the novel’s opening “There was a frog that lived in a small, deep well. He knew nothing but the world he lived in. His well and the sky he could see above it were his entire universe..” Observing the opening choreo/dance of Nathan’s FS, I feel the restriction, the fallen, the oppression, yet the attempt to explore..

second part is “The rite of spring” (1:22-2:17) it is an immediate transition from the completion of “brush dance” blank-leaving music phrasing. Nathan’s camel spin also connects this two parts together cleverly and seamlessly. Lori and his music mixer selected several segments from “The rite of spring” Part 1: The Adoration of the Earth - The Augurs Of Spring, as the backdrop of Nathan’s gorgeous stsq, the music editing here (and overall in the whole program) is really brilliant.
The ballet of “The rite of spring” has caused riot in ballet history, It is due its extremely anti-traditional ballet music composition and choreo. It has never been used in figure skating except for John Curry’s 1975 SP
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7lvV5EdaDA (although completely different selection of the rite of spring from Nathan’s FS,Lori obviously drew some inspiration there), In the movie, it was used near the end as one of Li’s dance performances, which is also the first time his mother came to US to watch him dance (after years of separation). Why choose this dance not just any other classic ballet dance, I think the purpose is to shown Li as an rebellion, a protagonist, a revolutionist, and the one who dare to be the first. Isn’t this coincide with Nathan’s experience and history-making character. The first to land 5 quads in one program, the first to land 5 different kinds of quads in competition, the manly rarity of a “sequin” dominated sport -- that is figure skating.
From music aspect, it sounded industrial, pressing, resolutional, even a bit mysterious and horrifying towards the end. (The rite of Spring has been used by Disney’s Fantasia, the imaginary associated is volcano eruption, fire, lava, smoke, drastic changes etc.)
From the narrative arch perspective of Nathan’s FS story telling: At this point, boy was picked by Madam Mao’s model ballet school, left his hometown and impoverished yet loving family, started extremely arduous, at times cruel ballet dance training (this is true at China back then). Another coincidence is that the synopsis of “Augurs of Spring” is “The celebration of spring begins in the hills. An old woman enters and begins to foretell the future.”
Li’s life and future has been decided by other except for himself.
Observing Nathan’s body language here, it is rigid/structured, it is staccato, completely different from the tender, soft, fragile feeling of his body language in the “brush dance” part. Nathan even added a level of angst here during his 2018 Nationals FS performance. Notice there is a upper body move (roll-up sleeve

Deep inside, Li is struggling, he believe that is not true ballet. yet he has no other choice but dance on.
Another small detail is the ice pattern of Nathan stsq is loosely a circle concluded with a vertical line in the middle, resembles the Greek letter Phi, which means Death as well as Creation.

The third part is right after the closure of “the rite of spring”. it is the poignant Erhu(one of the most emotional/lyrical Chinese traditional music instrument) music segment of “village dance and finale” (2:17-2:54), At this point, Li left China, Madam Mao’s school and started his journey in the world outside (USA). Initially, he is uncertain, he is confused, He has self-doubt in his belief and his loyalty to his own country, The worst is the internal turmoil and guilty feeling whenever he thinks about his Mother back in China and her sacrifice for him to be in United State of America…
Nathan’s facial expression here (poignant, longing
https://youtu.be/E-slfguDXe4?t=147 ) and body language (back to gentle, tender, curvy) all embodies this music motif (the music motif/variation used in the movie whenever Li is in a state of internal struggle and reflection). Also, this is the start of second half(bonus part) of his FS, intense jumping passes one after another, it is a huge test for Nathan’s stamina, Yet every jumping pass is still phrased to the music perfectly, this is the most nerve racking point for the audience as well, everyone holds breath, fixates on his jumps, nobody is certain about the final outcome (just like the plot in the movie).

The forth part (final part) is after the poignant Erhu motif to the end of “Village dance and finale” (2:54-4:48), which is also the soundtrack that accompanys the ending of the movie. After all struggles, when all said and done, Li found his own resolution. And China now is also a new open China. Li came back to his hometown and start to dance in front of hometown folks truly happily for the first time. “Before You Can Fly You Have To Be Free.”
Music wise, “village Dance” is very much a Western orchestral finale but with bits of the Chinese-sounding themes/melody, Lots of Chinese fans feel it (village dance and finale) is not your normal happy ending sound track from just about any movie, they feel a sense of livelihood and hope that is unique to and shared by only Chinese descendants.
Choreo/structure wise, it is Nathan’s last couple of jumps and the lively/powerful/glorious choreo stsq and final 2 spins. Nathan’s choreos stsq here is such a catharsis/climax, true abandonment and freedom. The next 2 spins choreo is yet another genius idea, it is not a continuous building upon choreo stsq to explosion, instead, it quiets down a bit initially, it is a peaceful feeling of return, with refreshed life, hope and happiness (also very Chinese in a way). Not only coincide with the movie ending plot, but also draw full circles of this performance.
Nathan BOI, during the most stressful Olympic season, under the extreme technique standard (five quads set by himself), decided to challenge such a artistically profound free program. Truly earned all my respect.
I will quote one Chinese fan’s comment to Nathan’s FS, summarized everything in one sentence
“短短四分五十秒飞逝而过,如同激荡惊叹的三十年变迁”
Shortly, 4 minutes 50 seconds fleets, as if the astonishing transformation of 3 decades.
PS: Mao's last dancer (book, movie, music) is totally political correct in China, it criticizes Culture Revolution (which is a mistake recognized and corrected by China) not China.
