Nathan Chen

Just watched it again
breathtaking and inspirational

I knew this free is a masterpiece, but did not expect it will end up on such a level.

I'm still crying a little and am so so happy that he smiled in the Kiss and Cry, even if only for a little bit. :luv17:

Nathan said he wants to experience this Olympic for himself through his own eyes.

I think he really had a eventful first OG. A truly once-in-a-life-time experience in all aspects.

A little Bitter makes Sweet all that Sweeter :)

Scott Hamilton tweeted that both he and Brian Botano were fifth in their first Olympics. I’d say that’s a good sign.

I think that was the biggest comeback in Olympic history!

NBC did a horrible job marketing Nathan Chen they build him up as a medal contender even after his disastrous short program and now a lot of people are upset with the actual Podium finishers because they think he should be on the podium the reality is after his short landing and 17th Place he had no shot in the medal. Nathan did win the free skate though. Congrats to Nathan and Vincent for finishing in the top 6

I hate NBC
this is their caption for Nathan's wining FS and history making FS
"Nathan Chen rallies for fifth place"
And I have to scroll down so many others to find his FS video.

Are you kidding me, isn't Nathan representing USA??!!

Booo to NBC, that's not cool.

It should have been "Nathan Chen bounces back after stupid media overhype and pressure almost crushes him and gives the finger to us here in the studio in our comfy chairs"

Anyway, congratulations to Nathan! I'm glad he was able to put on a great skate today and I hope he has a positive attitude going forward. :)

Now, I hope that Nathan will take part in the upcoming worlds, which happen to be in my country...it would be nice if he could medal there!

That was an amazing skate by Nathan - I wasn’t sure what to expect given his body language in the warm up - so glad he was able to pull it together!

LOVE grandpa Phill's article as always.

I am glad that Nathan opened up a little, do not attempt to maintain the persona that perhaps instilled to him by the media, after all he is still a human boi. Sometimes facing the brutal truth is more difficult than to deny it or mask it, which is part of all these intangible mental strength game. Arguably the toughest competitor with the strongest mind -- Yuna Queen's favorite quote "this too will pass"

I really hope that Nathan can get a selfie with Yuna and being invited to the Gala and have fun there with all other skaters.

Nathan proved to us he does have the goods to be an Olympic champ yesterday. And it is mostly mental when competing at this level.

While I am extremely happy for him, I sincerely hope that he will seek professional help from a sports psychologist.

I believe after this experience, a lot of things will become easier. But he still needs to work on this mental issue.

Absolutely love the emotions he displayed when he finished his last jump sequence. I could almost hear his internal voice to the world: take that!!!

I was in awe, still am...

We'll see how the practices go this week, but for some reason I'm not that worried about Nathan at this point. I feel like he's right on the verge of putting out a spectacular program but just has to put it all together.
Gonna toot my horn just a bit and quote myself from last week. This has a similar feel to 2016 GPF where Nathan struggled in the SP and skated lights out in the FS. From there his confidence reached an all time high and he went on to stomp at Nationals and FCC. Hopefully he can carry the momentum onto Worlds.

Dave Lease from The Skating Lesson did mention in one of his episodes that Nathan consults with a sports psychologist.

Nathan Chen will be the next world Champion, and the next Olympic Champion, I have no doubt about it.

Not sure yet about the 2022 Olympics, but I think he will definitely medal at Worlds - maybe even win. It depends on who of Hanyu, Uno, Fernandez, and Jin shows up and what they also do.

So proud of Nathan FS - that should give him so much mental strength!

As for mental strength,
I think it is not seek a sports physiologist that simple, otherwise, everyone would have a strong mind.

I still believe the ultimate confidence comes from confidence in your ability. I think Nathan will evaluate everything and make proper plan/strategies for next four years. Olympic Gold Medal is always whimsical, really improve figure skating in all aspects and enjoy the process is the way to go.

Nathan has what it takes. He is resilient and has a great support system within his family. He will go back to the drawing board and come back stronger. People said he skated well in the FS because he had no pressure. Not buying that at all! He had HUGE pressure to redeem himself, even if it was only within his own mind. Those shoulders are pretty small to have the weight of the whole country on them. Stay strong Nathan!

I agree. I feel like it is even more pressure because there is no "cushion" of a very high SP score. And it's not like he was "okay" with being out of contention.
Of course, it does make sense that his SP result made him angry (as he said) and hungry for an absolutely stunning performance, which he delivered. What a boss. I think this was a gold medal performance for many people. Does he get a small medal for the FS or is only in Worlds?

I'm so happy to see him happy again :)
