Nathan Chen

^I wasn't sure who that was with him. At first I thought it was Romain.

I get the sense that Nathan is physically ok, although it sounds like he was injured and wasn't fully healed by the Olympics. Hopefully catching the flu was a blessing in disguise and allowed him to get some needed rest before worlds.

Apparently Nathan recently received some kind of medical treatment on his leg from this fellow who practices cupping. Karen also appears on his Instagram.

Hope in Nathan's future life, he can meet and hangout with many many friends that loves and appreciates him like true brothers and sisters.

I am frustrated (and angry) about Nathan's treatment during the OG and afterwards.
As we all know he was hyped (harassed) by US media to the extend that might very possibly contributed to the undesirable results in his short programs. Of course. our humble Nathan never said anything about that, only took all the responsibility onto himself.
Yet, after OG, his heroic achievement in his historical FS is largely ignored, Even Plushenko said that in US, people should award Nathan's OG figure skating historical achievement with a platinum. It seems like all other media outside of US understand and appreciated Nathan's Olympic achievement in figure skating much more. Yet we all know what is happening inside of US now...
All these make me sad not only for Nathan, but also for all those hard working US figure skating athletes and for the future of US figure skating.

There is a reason that Figure skating is declining in US, and what they are doing right now is not the correct way (actually ignorant)...

^You mean because Nathan wasn't invited to go to the Oscars, among other things? I think he's intentionally keeping a low profile right now because he 100% wants to go to Worlds and do well there.

Anyone know why the US figure skating market declined so much after 2002 yet Russia seemed to have improved? A lot of Russian skaters moved back to Russia. Having a mega star like Hanyu certainly helped the Japan market.

OT. Some recent discussion about this topic:

Nathan with a OGM could have had more cross appeal than other US skaters (they have to rely on sponsoring political agenda or playing drama queens); indication of this is the fact that the last competition at US Nationals was the men's FS instead of ladies. I don't know if he could reach Yuzuru's or Yuna/Mao level of fandom, as Japanese/Korean fans are particularly invested at the moment. I think however that he is already fairly well received in Japan and he could work to build a more substantial fandom in China, given his heritage (going to Cup of China could be an idea but I doubt he will get invitation there because of Boyang).

many things, not specifically refer to the Oscar invitation.

As for how US should increase figure skating's popularity,
they should really spend energy and time on cultivation this sport itself, and educate the public about the true merit of figure skating at it purest form. not just reply on one or two mega stars (even if it is the mega star approach, it need patience to cultivate and it needs to be a mega star of figure skating, for all the mega stars in other countries, they are the greatest figure skaters first and foremost) nor other gimmicks outside of figure skating.
Educate the public the true merit of figure skating at it purest form and have understanding and respect of figure skating this sport is exactly what figure skating popular countries are doing right now including Japan and Canada. And China is catching up for the next OG.
This should be the foundation.

Super star like Hanyu certainly is not the only reason why figure skating is so popular in Japan. The real reason is like I posted above, years of proper education of figure skating to the general public in Japan. The audiences who bought all the tickets in every competitions in Japan, truly understand this sports, thus they love it so much, because figure skating itself perhaps is the most amazing sports ever.

Can someone knowledgeable explain to me why Nathan gets such low GOE for his spins? Because I'm not that much into spins, so I'm not good at judging their quality, unless they are done by someone who obviously excels at them, like Jason Brown for instance.

I mean, I can see that Nathan doesn't have the fastest spins out there, but I don't think they are slow either.

And sometimes they are not that well-centered, but neither are the spins of other top contenders and they still end up with better GOE, so unless it's biased judging...? :confused2: (I mean, I've seen some spins that travelled a LOT, and they still got like +2s or even some +3s...)

His positions look beautiful to me, even though he's not doing anything requiring above average flexibility, but it all looks nice, supple and stretched... and I particularly love that his skating leg, during his camel spins, is always straight and not bend in the knee, which I think looks super ugly and will ruin any camel spin for me (and I see many men have that kind of bend knee... :noshake:).

His combo spin usually gets high GOE, but not his camel and sit, so what makes his combo better than the other two?

The only obvious flaw I can see is the change of foot by jump in his camel, which isn't very high, looks really untidy and throws him off a lot (and if it's so problematic, why doesn't he choose another level feature? Maybe he could pull off a donut spin, even if it's not a nice round one...?)

if you have followed other countries coverage of this OG and figure skating in general, Japan, Canada, or even China. you will find NBC's is the worst...

Thank for sharing the older thread. Makes a lot of sense to me. I had been a huge FS fan, but after the retirement of the "golden generation" Alexie, Michelle etc. and the new judging system, I lost interest. None of the current gen skaters really caught my attention and I don't like the new judging system. I'm not sure how it helped to promote "fairness".

I saw Nathan's performance at last year's National. There was something in him that caught my attention. For someone so young and did mostly jumps, he still demonstrated an intangible star quality. So after a decade, I returned as a staking fan. I really hope Nathan can realize his full potential in the years to come.

That's why I was happy to see Nathan got invited to skate in Japan's Stars on Ice (in addition to the US Stars on Ice). Skating's become such a popular sport in Asia now, so if that's where the market is, good for him. The photos of him and Mai Mihara surely helped with his popularity in Japan. Maybe he should learn Japanese too while we're at it. :)

here is Nathan's 2017 COI Nemesis , it has an interview of Nathan in the end
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5lNR-4Z-_4
Nathan is literally out of breathe yet he is so excited to perform.
Every time Nathan performs he give it 100% (although he is kinda shy and low-key outside of it). I am still gutted that he could not perform at the OG gala. everything else really does not matter, but that is one more chance to show his figure skating (amazing) on the highest stage and to the largest audience. as Nathan said in the interview, he does not have many olympics in his athletic life time...

I would not say his photo with Mai is the reason he is popular in Japan.
The reason is still his figure skating, Nathan is a great figure skating talent (once in a generation). And educated Japanese audience can see that.

Yes of course, the Japanese audiences are so supportive and appreciative of great skating. Although I also saw this video (not sure where it's from-- a Japanese show or youtube channel about sports?) where it looks like a bunch of speculation about Nathan and Mai.

Anyway, they are both cute and I hope Nathan gets all his deserved attention and glory after medaling at or even winning Worlds. It is a little irksome that Adam has been invited to show after show, compared to Nathan, but he is older and has his platform to speak about.

I think in general the Russian and Japanese general audience have deeper understanding of FS and higher level of appreciation.

as for Nathan's spin
I listed all the features in Nathan's OG FS.
I am not very familiar with rules (specific bullets etc.) nowadays. maybe I should study the rules again just for Nathan.

Change foot camel spin level 4 BV 3.20 GOE 0.57
camel(side) on left leg 4 revolutions
change into forward outside edge 3 revolutions and upward camel position
jump into right foot camel(side) 3 revolutions
catch foot camel(front) position 3 revolutions

Fly change foot combination spin level 4 BV 3.50 GOE 0.93 (highest spin GOE for Nathan’s OG FS)
butterfly entry into right leg camel(side) position 3 revolution
sit position with side upper body twist 5 revolutions
change foot to left upright position (catch foot front) 4 revolutions
tuck under sit position 4 revolutions

Change foot combination spin level 4 BV 3.50 GOE 0.86
illusion difficult entry
sit position on right leg 3 revolutions
tuck under(corkscrew) side upright position 5 revolution
change foot to left camel(side) position 3 revolutions
sit cannon ball 8 revolutions, 4 with catch foot in front 4 with tuck hand behind
upright(side) position

I think Nathan's spins are performed generally in pleasing position with great speed, and have more than enough revolutions. all suited to music structure. and his signature spin position, the one that used on Coca bottle is really one of his most beautiful position, he can do it really fast and reminds me of Stephane Lambiel somehow.

Need to compare his features with other skaters' spin scored higher GOE to know why, and what needs to be improved.

please correct me, if I have made any errors as for the features in Nathan's spins. also perhaps someone familiar with level/GOE bullet can elaborate more about his spins.
