Nathan Chen

I can't really see - but I can believe it

Boys playing basketball wherever can be really annoying - especially when you get hit by the ball ! ... ugh

I can't see her face to see if she's annoyed, but one must get used to the ways of the rebellious local hypebeasts if they want to train in America.

As for the Jazz losing, I wanted to feel bad but my hometown team won so I can't...

I'd like to think she's looking more shy than annoyed...probably low key excited to interact with Nathan but is still too shy to take initiative, being a polite Japanese teenager and all

for some reason I find 'hypebeast' used to refer to Nathan as super annoying ...

I don't mean you, discode :)

lol sorry, it's funny though. It's okay if you find it annoying since twitter repeats it so often. I was using it in jest. It's not something I believe. The point still stands, I'm sure it's a bit of a cultural shock to be around them wild boys playing bb, though it's something you gotta get used to.

I agree, with her being shy as well. I'm looking forward to seeing some skating with everyone.

There’s this super weird narrative that Nathan is like this frat boy or f-boi on twitter and stuff and I really don’t get it lol. I mean I know it’s like in a joking manner and he does have certain typically American guy characteristics about him but his Chinese culture is also very evident in him and they’re def not like that lol. It’s just weird, maybe it’s the age group of certain fans.

yeah - I don't get it and think it's ridiculous ... do these people know what an actual f-boi or 'bro' is - seriously.

And other than he's into Nikes (which he gets for free) - I don't see what's so 'HYPEBEAST!!' about him either

super lame

I get it, but I can see why it would annoy some people. I kind of view him as a typical American teen in a lot of ways (other than being talented, smart, accomplished...etc). Some of the things people say take it too far though. Like suggesting he's going to turn into some vaping frat bro at Yale.

Though I think part of the joke is that he's so soft and sweet, which everyone recognizes of course. So nobody is really saying he's actually some bro.

I actually did see tweets before from someone trying to make their case that Nathan and Alex Shib are indeed, 'bros'. seriously lol

I don’t even necessarily get annoyed, just find it strange lol. I think he’s like many first generation immigrant Americans, where ofc there will be strong American influences in some ways but it’s more on the surface like the way they dress, speak, mannerisms whereas their heritage has a stronger hold on them internally such as what they prioritize, how they think, what they value, how they actually conduct their lives. That’s just something I’ve noticed from my own experience and observations.

So Nathan def talks, dresses, has regular interests that are typical American but his ambition, goals, priority on education, athletics, music, and emphasis on overachieving is more influenced by his Chinese background as all his siblings are based on what he’s said of his family/parents. That’s why I find assigning him these typically (white if we’re being honest) American characteristics on him very random. But it’s not a huge deal, I just always find it 🤨

Is being a “bro” about being soft and sweet? Maybe I have a different meaning of it, if so it might change the context for me lol. Or do you mean it’s meant as an ironic thing?

Hypebeast is so incorrectly used even lbj had to correct someone when it was used on him, so is Boi - the definition of boi came from lgbt community. Bro actually has a east/west coasts differentiation but whatever, we live in a name tag world and he sure is creating his own brand. People trying to sound cool but come off on the opposite end... stick to what you know, feel comfortable and be yourself when speaking/writing.

I like the fusion balance of American & Chinese (Asian) Nathan has going on all levels, from academic, art/music, hobbies, social awareness to sports and style.

@ heyheyhey I was just referring to the bold Nathan Chen header you have the posts.

Love to know what he thinks about the Final.

LOL being part of a frat doesn't necessarily mean you become the stereotypical "bro". Especially in these top universities there are actually some really great frats. Not all, but a handful seem to be super chill and indeed like a "family". Seems like it's a good idea to have a support network if you click with the people, so I wouldn't personally rule out Nathan wanting to/trying out being part of a frat. Not all guys in frats are the stereotypical "frat boys", and there are some pretty decent frats - there are some that can even be nerdy and all about the wholesome life! Not sure if Yale has those, I just know a few other unis that do. :)

When I say “frat bro”, I’m talking specifically of the stereotypical kind since that’s the kind that’s associated with Nathan in the jokes. “Frat bro” is usually in reference to that specific type on social media, it’s almost its own category lol.

I was part of one myself so I know it’s not all like that, different ones have different kind of personalities and you have to find one that fits for you so yes, they can be beneficial if they’re not the extreme hazing/partying type. Idk if Nathan would have time for it but I’m sure he can find he good one at Yale if he was interested.
