I think Nathan has enough on his plate right now - fluently speak Mandarin too? I'm sure he could someday if he's really motivated ... but maybe he's not super with foreign languages? I don't know. But he said he doesn't understand any Russian - even though he's had Russian teachers for most of his life ... which I have as well and I can understand some Russian (if necessary).
I don’t mean right now lol. I mean eventually because it is part of his heritage and it’s always nice to be able to speak your home language. I know from experience that it can feel awkward not know your mother tongue when you’re a first generation American immigrant and you get around natives but you can’t fully communicate with them. Sometimes natives can get judge-mental about that too, where it’s like they feel you’re becoming too Americanized if you don’t speak the language. Not saying he’s experiencing this, just that it’s a common problem for 1st generation Americans. Being bilingual is very beneficial, he should take advantage of that in the future imo.
I wouldn’t think any of his Russian coaches spoke any Russian to him so I wouldn’t expect him to understand any.
