Nathan Chen

can u give me a time stamp? for the video

Just skipping around, but one was at 38:00 she compares Nathan and Javi in how it's nice they both have lives outside of FS and how Nathan can still do THAT at nationals even while doing other things with his life.

Then she went on about his artistry at 56:00 when they were talking about how quads (via +5) are still counted for so much compared to no new bonus for PCS but he didn't really have to do such an artistic program but did it anyway. That he could have just done his quads and won anyway. They were talking about Euros too so yeah, she just brought him up.

Trying to catch up with the thread, I missed so much. Glad Nate did so well, I didn’t get to watch his skates until today (or the GPF) but saw him trending on Sunday on twitter so I figured he won without seeing it lol.

When Nathan describes his training schedule he makes it sound fairly reasonable but in truth there are likely not many skaters who could make it work. I honestly feel his experiences juggling multiple extracurricular activities as a child along with his time spent away from Raf with Marina have provided him with the mental skills needed to handle the situation.

I agree but I also think he couldn’t do as well if he didn’t have a coach who knew him so well that he can fix whatever is wrong with a simple call on skype or perfect his routine just with a week or 2 of training prior to a competition. That kinda knowledge of a student only comes from building years upon years of time together (esp his formative years). He said something about how Raf knows him even better than he knows himself in one of this post interviews after Nationals and it made me realize that’s probably a big factor in why he’s able to juggle the two. I think it’d be harder with another coach who didn’t know him as well.

He did his 4Lz and 4T-3T on my end of the rink, and I couldn't believe how fast he rotates.

A lot of people talk like Nathan rotates quickly only due to his body size, but not enough gets said about his technique. Mamamiia's videos illustrates this perfectly. Compared to the other guys Nathan's jumps are so compact and precise with perfect air position, which greatly help with rotational speed.

Brian Boitano at Men’s Free Wrap-up:

‘He’s a completely different skater than I saw last year - the composure, the focus, the calm, the strength, the precision, just everything is coming into play - it’s almost surreal to watch him skate in a competition like this. He’s so in control, and he is literally dominating.’

‘I think the secret for him, and in the future ... is his staying healthy. You’re going to have to find that balance, because he’s pounding away at these things, it’s going to be taking a toll on his body - as he gets a little more muscular and heavy - so that’s going to be the real test for him.’

This TeamUSA article "14 things we learned last week" listed Nathan's win at 10, and calling him "professional multitasker"

"10. Nathan Chen: Professional multitasker. Chen won his third straight U.S. figure skating title on top of the fact that he’s currently a full-time student at Yale."

Here is the article mentioned above

It is a nice summary of press conference after the lp, with little bit more info at the end of the article about him managing his training schedule without an in-person coach, and "unsure of how much longer he will be able to maintain this pace and that it’s up in the air as to when one of the two priorities might have to take a backseat"

"The past six months have taught Chen a lot about time management, responsibility and independence.
He takes four courses a semester – last semester’s included chemistry, Calculus 1, Spanish and an English course (‘Dopamine And Its Discontents’), while two of this semester’s have yet to be determined – and is required to have eight credits by the end of the year in order to advance to his second year. He is enjoying the social life and activities that come with living on campus as a college freshman, saying they are welcome distractions that help take his mind off skating when he has a bad day at the rink."

All the while, he is managing his own training schedule without having an in-person coach.

“His presence really forces us to be much more alert, much more on top of what we’re doing. Having that and also a little bit more guidance from him in terms of how to structure practices was really beneficial.”
Chen called his nationals win “reassuring” to know that he can balance and master both school and skating, though he had it tougher during the grand prix season, which he juggled with midterms, finals and other collegiate obligations.
He insists he is taking it one semester at a time for now, unsure of how much longer he will be able to maintain this pace and that it’s up in the air as to when one of the two priorities might have to take a backseat.

Thanks, Mamamiia for your great videos. You should be on Nathan's team or work for NBC

And justvaliant, thank you for sharing your baby news with us. Update us if you would like to when baby Edmund Nathaniel comes.

After watching some of the post interview stuff, can I just say that this is the best free promotion Yale can ask for? They mentioned it like every 3 seconds and he gets asked about it every time lol. And it’s during competitions he’s winning by 20,40,50 points so it makes them look even better he’s their student haha
