Nathan Chen

Michelle updated her IG with some photos. You can see the back of Nathan's fluffy head in the 2nd one.
It was also a treat to catch up and congratulate @nathanwchen for his second WORLD TITLE! He’s the epitome of a superstar student athlete - winning World’s while on Spring break and coming back to ace his midterms. #nobigdeal

Not sure he lost it, but the 4S hasn't ever really been his best jump. He also landed it pretty well in practice lately, but it's just not worth going for with the new rules if you can't be clean. Plus I'm pretty sure he'd put it towards the end of the program. He just needs to work on it more. He'll prob get it back fully over the summer.

I think so too. Raf said all of his elements looked really amazing at Champs Camp (I think?), wonder if that included 4S.

And in his TSL interview in August, he mentioned Nathan’s jumps are stable, but it took him a while to get a perfect 4flip and 4lz back. Ironically the stable jumps are 3A and 4t.

Of course to stay healthy and fit is the most important thing for him, I am just wondering if they need to do something different in the fall semester. Good thing is when GP starts, he would see Raf at least once a month.

Thanks sheetz. It looks so easy and effortless, how come he had so much trouble with this jump?

To me, in terms of skating, it seemed that face time coaching doesn’t work very well comes to jumps. Or maybe because he is not with Raf, he doesn’t practice jumps a lot to avoid injuries.

It seems that is the case about facetime coaching. If Nathan wasn’t practicing a lot of jumps this season, that’s a good thing - would give his body a bit of a break after the intense Olympic season.

You have a good memory! I don’t even remember that TSL interview - will have to go back and watch it.

I am not quite sure, but I remembered it is one of the interviews before he went to school. And you are right Raf did mention everybody was amazed at how good he is at champs camp. Good for him, the camp would be at his rink, no need to travel to Colorado Springs.

I don’t want him to quit school unless he wants to himself. He just looked so happy at school. And I agreed with what Frida80 said, he should have no problem handling the workload. It is just the FaceTime thing I doubt the effectiveness as to jumps.

Maybe his last semester at Yale for now.

Fitness appears to have been less an issue for him this season than staying healthy. Seems that he has been sick at least half the time:(

I would like him be able to finish two years at school, if that’s what he wants. Being at college seems to have been really positive for him in so many ways!

He did mention how he did at Worlds could influence his decision/plans for next year. And it seems that Raf wants a full two years with him to prepare for the Olympics, I’m sure he has his reasons. We will see what happens ...

“I think what differentiates skating from other sports is that it’s also not only about athleticism. There is an artistic component, which complicates things enormously,” said designer Vera Wang, formerly a nationally ranked skater, who also creates costumes for select elite skaters.

“I was watching skiing this last weekend. No one is judging Mikaela Shiffrin on whether she’s smiling, what she is wearing, whether she is artistic. You just pay attention to who goes down the mountain fastest. No one cares about how you look while you are doing it,” Wang elaborated of skating’s added pressures.

The designer wardrobed U.S. ladies’ figure skating throughout its dynastic years in the Nineties, collaborating with Nancy Kerrigan and Michelle Kwan. Lately she has turned her attention toward men’s costumes, working with 2010 Olympic gold medalist Evan Lysacek and with current top U.S. men’s skater Nathan Chen.
...
Designing figure skating costumes is akin to designing clothes for a subculture — it requires creativity and a sensitivity toward the quirks of the community it serves. Both Lamond and Wang work technical fabrics like power mesh to enable free movement, while manipulating the material so it reflects a certain sophistication. “You have to factor in all of their footwork and the weight of the costume. It technically can’t have any rips. And for men’s skating, the pants hook underneath the skates — if that comes undone, it ruins the performance,” said Wang.
