Nathan Chen

I agree with fierysky in that this time Nathan’s performance has received such overwhelmingly positive reaction that those few remaining naysaying voices sound particularly insignifiant and pathetic.

I watched Nathan compete at SA. While the audience was very supportive of every skater there you can tell that their enthusiasm just turned up a notch when Nathan appeared. There was such a synchronized motion among a sizable fraction of the audience to take out their phones and get ready for filming Nathan when he stepped onto the ice that both my friend and I couldn’t help getting cracked up. And how excited everyone was when Nathan showed up for autography 😄 And he’s apparently the favorite among coaches at my local rink. Anyways I think he actually has a healthy dose of general support without too much of the kind of toxicity that comes with an overly expansive and obsessed fan base (not naming names).

I believe shine was referring to this video, FB live with his fans last June, it is “Is there anyone who you wish you could’ve skated with who you never got to work with”, not choreography

Yeah those are the videos I was talking about but I couldn’t remember off the top of my head where I had seen these. Kurt didn’t specify what ”working” with Nathan meant but I just took it to mean choreography, otherwise I’m not sure what other kind of work he could be doing with Nathan? I also vaguely remember he had said choreography for Nathan on another occasion that wasn’t a video interview, plus he has mentioned Nathan’s versatility multiple times, which from a choreographer’s point of view would naturally be a great quality to work with.

Actually Kurt loves Nathan’s skating. In the CBC broadcast of the 2015 junior men’s GPF, Nathan skated to Chopin’s Piano Concerto #1. Kurt was already gushing over Nathan’s skating and artistry (skating with an old soul). This was 15 yr old Nathan before he did so many quads and could focus on performance, I love this program. So balletic.

Yeah Kurt's always very complementary of Nathan actually - not sure how fierysky got the opposite impression. Even when he was asked who he'd like to work with on choreography, he said Nathan.
Thanks for straightening me out guys. I realize I might have gotten Kurt's comments about another skater mixed up with Nathan's. It's been a long week for me. Sorry Kurt!!! On the possibility you might read this, I apologize.:pray::pray:

But I think my main point still stands. I found across the board, people were more engaged with him "artistically" for the first time. I mean we are, but I think he skateed so brilliantly that people were finally able to see what we see too.

Kurt has always loved Nathan's choreography, especially in Shae's programs. Caravan was one of his favorites.

So does anyone want to guess Nathan's layouts for WTT? Last time he did 1 quad in the SP and 3 in the FS, but he was sick and there was less competition. If he isn't feeling too poorly I think he may just use the SA layouts that were originally submitted for Worlds.

Maybe same thing, but remove the 4lz in both programs? So 4 quads in the FS, 4T/4F3T in the SP

For the SP I think he will probably do the 4F and 4T3T as he should be pretty comfortable with that layout. For the FS, I originally thought he would use this competition to experiment with layouts for the next season (like when he brought back the 4S in the last WTT or the 4Lo in the LVI). But now Yuzu is in the game he might feel obligated to go for something that he has more consistency with? In that case the ISP2/SA layout seems a pretty good choice. And yeah, give that 4Lz a break. But please do a triple so I’m not worried 😜

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears Nathan now holds the longest ISU winning streak in the IJS era for men?
1. '18 Worlds
2. '18 SA
3. '18 IdF
4. '18 GPF
5. '19 Worlds
6. '19 SA
7. '19 IdF
8. '19 GPF
9. '21 Worlds
I'm not counting '20 SA for this list.

The 2nd longest winning streak I can find is Plushenko's:
1. '04 CoR
2. '04 GPF
3. '05 Euros
4. '05 CoR
5. '06 Euros
6. '06 Olympics
7. '09 CoR
8. '10 Euros

3rd is Chan's:
1. '10 GPF
2. '11 Worlds
3. '11 SC
4. '11 TEB
5. '11 GPF
6. '12 4CC
7. '12 Worlds

Nathan is also within striking distance of Medvedeva's ladies' record of 12.

Yup, I was gonna say the same thing. Especially the SP. I loved it at Skate America, the intensity and energy of it, and I would hope that an easier layout would make him skate less tense and more like at those early competitions.

Although maybe he would also like the challenge of repeating his 5 quad layout, to see how consistent it is? But then he just peaked at Worlds and would now rather decompress, I assume? Not overstrain his body? Plus with all that travel and shorter practice/adjustment time before the competition compared to Worlds, it's probably not a good idea.

Also happy for him, that JLB will be at WTT too. :giggle:

Speaking of layouts, I'm wondering what Nathan's plan would be for next season. The current layout is already insane, but it seems to lie within his ability so I think they will try to push it even further. The only two things I could see happening to increase his BV without having to introduce a sixth quad are 1) replacing the second-half 4T3T with the 4F3T; 2) making the 3Lz3T the final jump and moving the 3A to the first half. Doing just #1 can boost his BV by 1.65 and doing both can boost it by 1.86. In comparison, replacing the first half 3Lz with the 4Lo gives him an extra 3.6 points. I think the probability for Nathan to go for six quads is diminishing, since he has spent considerable time making each of his quads consistent and his time is running out for doing the same to his least reliable quad, not to mention the risk for injury (same reason why I don't think he will do two 4Lzs). On the other hand, repeating the 4F instead of the 4T, while having a more limited BV benefit, is doable. So who knows, maybe THAT is what Nathan will try at the WTT

ETA: More specifically, THAT refers to a four-quad program with a backloaded 4F3T. Please Nathan, no more five-quad programs for now.

Layout wise, I hope he does a 4F3T, 4T for the SP at the Olympics. He doesn't need to do a layout that hard or risky in the SP when the FS is his strength. Just get through the SP. My blood pressure will not be able to take him doing a combo in the 2nd half at the Olympics is all I'm saying. Please think of your fans Nathan. :ROFLMAO:

Doing every quad in the FS would be pretty neat. But yeah, not sure he'll ever stabilize a 4lo enough to do it. And repeating the 4F also seems really doable, 4F3T in the second half instead of 4T3T? Fun. I don't expect 5 quads at WTT. 4lz seems like a jump that has a higher risk of injury like you said. Nobody wants an ankle injury right now.

I am under the impression that he will not push the technical boundary beyond this season. The results at this worlds just confirmed that. I expect similar BVs next season (no more trials pls for the sake of my heart). And yes I can’t take both 4Lz and 2nd half 4F3T in SP at the Olympics.
The most important thing now is to stay healthy and keep all the jumps he is currently doing consistent.

In that case won’t it be better if he does the 4T3T and then the 4F? The toe combo should be easier for him and I miss his solo flip (higher BV when backloaded to boot).

Random question here. I came across this old photo on my timeline today (second one): https://www.instagram.com/p/ByYVSsPpHhp/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link and it reminded me of a similar picture, where Nathan's balletic posture stands out in the crowd. The problem is, I only remember it was a group number in a show with Shoma standing next to him, but don't remember which show exactly. Does anyone happen to remember where that picture is from? It's really bugging me now 🤦‍♀️

The first one that comes to mind is The Legends finale but I don't think he was next to Shoma.
