Nathan Chen

You could tell he was nervous on the 4Lz but loosened up after that.

It's still baffling that he knew he doesn't usually do that great at the beginning of season, yet still went for such an insane layout.
It was quite insane to do that. But I honestly quite admire it. Seems like he likes to challenge himself. He's only 22 anyway.))
(Not that I encourage such act

Insane is relative. I think his primary goal at Skate America was to get more mileage towards his planned "insane" content for the 2nd half of the season, rather than to win easily.

After all, his "stable" content was pretty wild when he started doing them at competitions. I remember when he kept on having problems with the 4TEu3F even at GPF 2019 he ended up with a 4TEu3S.

In my opinion, his experience in those imperfect competitions is the foundation for the perfect performances later in the season, like the Philip Glass last season.

There are little things here and there that need to be improved, but, overall, well done. I think that’s the best score he’s ever had at the beginning of the season. I’m so relieved, and it looks like he was too (at the end of his program). He knows he has some work, but a vast improvement from last week. Seeing the program performed so much better makes me like it better.

I was really glad to see Nathan being more like the Nathan we're used to seeing. His 4Lz was done with some caution, which is understandable, but I was a bit surprised to see him also so cautious with the Nemesis StSq. I hope to see him with more attack and energy during that section as he gets more and more comfortable with the overall program.

Really happy to see Nathan do well here!! As someone mentioned, I don't think he's ever gotten 106.72 this early in the season before. He peaks later (as he should - in Feb in Beijing).

Article from Phil Hersh.
That is why Chen chose to go right back to the quad lutz rather than pick an easier jump to open Friday’s short program at Skate Canada in Vancouver.

“I definitely needed to get over that hurdle of the lutz,” Chen said.

This whole situation is laughable. I think it's quite unfair that Raf is being punished so severely for unknowingly doing something that the ISU didn't care enough about to even bother clearly marking. Feels almost like a trap for the skaters and their teams. Come on, ISU. You can do better.

It was also kind of funny how Nathan was the one reassuring Raf that he would be fine and even telling Raf to leave Vancouver early if he felt like it. I can imagine that in this situation, Raf was probably the one freaking out. Always so level-headed and rational is Nathan 😄

I'm not really even complaining or anything, just noting something I thought was interesting since I've never really paid attention to intros before but how come, during the 6 minute-warmup, some of the introductions for some of the skaters were so lacking while others had so much more details? Keegan was introduced as having earned 4th at the Finlandia trophy and 6th at Worlds but Nathan was simply introduced as having earned a bronze at the Olympics from WAY back in 2018? Makes it sound like he has accomplished absolutely nothing since then. Like, I'm not expecting "3x consecutive World champ, 5X US National champ, 2X Grand Prix Final reigning champ" but he couldn't simply be introduced as the reigning world champ? I guess my question is, who writes up these intros anyway? It's not the skaters themselves, is it?

And I really like what Elladj Balde had to say about the details in Nathan's performances. I'm just so tired of those saying that he does nothing except jump.

I too thought it was odd to mention the Olympic bronze and that's it.

I'm going to be away during Nathan's free. I guess the good news I won't have to have a nervous breakdown watching it live. Good luck to Nathan today!!

The announcer apparently lacked some knowledge about figure skating. During 6 mins warmup for the pairs, S/H were mentioned as “representing Japan” then got corrected probably with the help of the script.

Ah, I see. Guess I'd still like to know who writes these intros. Better not be the skaters themselves. I remember Nathan introducing himself one time at a charity type event as someone who has competed at the Olympics and at World competitions. I was just like..."Okay, buddy."
