All those Europeans. I loved that Best Supporting Actress. She looked as though she left the dishes in the sink and ran over to the Kodak Theater.

Joe.

She was a big upset, IIRC, no one saw her winning....

It was really interesting to see a more international Oscars...

guess the Academy didn't think the American's stepped up... *shrugs*

Amy Adams and Keira Knightly should have at least been nominated for best Actress, though...

the Awards ceremony itself was a downer. They should have pushed it back a few weeks, it was 80 years old this year and it was the lamest celebration in a long time. Even the jokes felt rehashed.

Yes, Tilda Swinton looked like she wore a glade trash bag to the Oscars..BUT, I am very happy for her. She is such a wonderful actress and finally got her due. Daniel Day Lewis is one of the greatest actors of our time so I can understand him winning his amazing portrayl in "The Will Be Blood". Marion Colliard's transition into Edith Piaf was brilliant! All I can say about Javier Bardem is WOW! ......So I can't help it if the American's did't step up to the plate this year.....LOL

isn't she known for her..... *lack* of style on the red carpet, though. I seem to recall seeing her in a lot of 'what was she thinking lists' this year lol

I don't really care what nationalities win the Oscars. It's the best performance that counts. I didn't actually see any of the winning performances this year, so I can't really judge the judging.

I was very happy to have two surprises in big categories. The Oscars have become quite predictable in recent years, which I find rather boring.

I liked the show overall. I love Jon Stewart, and the audience seemed to warm up to him more this time around. I also liked that the show only ran around 3 hours and 20 minutes. It didn't drag on as it often has in the past.

In terms of dresses, I usually seem to disagree with the "experts" in the news about what looked good and what didn't. Anne Hathaway's dress seems to be getting universal praise, and I thought it was awful. Katherine Heigl looked fantastic. I'd love to have a body like that!

Actually, this was her first time on the Oscar red carpet. She has been to the Bafta's a few times..I think she has always highlighted her simplicity and androgyny in her fashion, no make-up, etc..She was nominated for a Golden Globes a few years ago for "The Deep End" in 2002.. Which bye the way is an amazing moving! I have loved her play on androgyny ever since her film "Orlando" in 92...which she won several critics awards for that role..

she made the rounds on all the major red carpets this year, though, which is where I guess I've seen her... her hair style was the same at the Oscars as it was everywhere else...

Marion Cotillard was amazing in La Vie en Rose and thoroughly deserved her Oscar. Wasn't Helen Mirren's dress to die for? Also, I wish James McAvoy could have presented all the awards. I could listen to him all evening-- no problem!

If you wish to extend this, then an Irishman and a Czech woman won Best Song, and I heard several foreign accents from the "Bourne Ultimatum" winners as well. The Coen Brothers seemed to be the only American winners PERIOD.

I also loved Mirren's dress. It was beautiful. I also agree about McEvoy. He's great. I hope the Oscars don't continue to overlook his outstanding performances.

She actually wasn't an upset to those who follow the Oscar race closely (I'm a film buff and sorta obligated).

The others nominated in the category were Ruby Dee (her performance was 3 minutes long; she was only nominated because of her age and career, not because of the performance. It would have been embarrassing to have her as the winner), Cate Blanchett (her film was very off-putting for many and she just won a few years ago), Saoirse Ronan (she's too young), and Amy Ryan (not very well known and a fairly low-key performance).

Best Actress was the only surprise in the big categories but a ton of people predicted it too, so it wasn't THAT much of a surprise. If Marion Cotillard had given that performance in the English language, she would have been the frontrunner the whole time.

That said, the technical categories were QUITE surprising this year. For those who are Oscar geeks, this ceremony was really excellent because SO many of the categories were actually races this year and not just coronations for a nominee that we all knew would win months in advance.

As usual Canadians were pretty much shut out. We did get a bit of a nod with Juno. I think Julie Christie should have taken the best actress category for "Away from Her." Great movie.

I don't recall hearing her name in teh running, but then I'm just a film student. Everyone was giving it to Ryan.... and if you go by the formula that a lot of movie buffs like to of the SAG awards then again it wasn't Tilda...

the next morning most film critics were saying they didn't see her win coming...

According to a prof that I have that was born and raised in Canada he said that Canadian movies are weird and Canadians don't watch Canadian movies  which I found hysterical. Canadian actors have gotten credit in the past. There are quite a few good actors that come from Canada.... the funniest guys come from there....

You're all too young to remember the Broadway musical: Follies The original 3 leading ladies in that show were all from Canada.

Joe

Toni, you're right in that English Canadians don't often watch English Canadian films. I think it's because the U.S. can spend more much money on films, we just watch American films. Canada's broadcast regulators are always fretting about Canadian content. TV and radio stations have "CanCon" rules, where so much of their programming has to be Canadian.

Canadian films run the gamut. There are some very odd ones, but some good ones, too. Quebec has a very successful French film industry. It obviously doesn't have quite the same attraction to American English-language films.

Canadians in general seem to have a very large inferiority complex. We notice any time a Canadian isn't mentioned or doesn't win something. We'll try to claim anyone as Canadian, even if they only vacationed here for three weeks as a child. ;) It gets a little tired after a while.

I was mad that Brad Renfro wasn't in the tribute for people who passed away. He was snubbed.
