My friend in NY has been checking the print edition of the NYT the last couple of days to see if this article would make it to print, and she finally found it on Sunday (although they changed the title unnecessarily, imo). Took up about 3 pages in total with some very large photos. I wasn't expecting it to make it to the print edition of the Times, let alone take up this much space, but once I saw the article made it to the Friday Briefing I thought it might actually happen.

I still am 110% sure Hanyu with 2 clean programs cannot be beaten at the Olympics. Not even if Chen skated cleanly with all his quads (Hanyu has enough GOE and PCS advantage to overcome the base value gap) or Uno skating cleanly.

I still am 110% sure Hanyu with 2 clean programs cannot be beaten at the Olympics. Not even if Chen skated cleanly with all his quads (Hanyu has enough GOE and PCS advantage to overcome the base value gap) or Uno skating cleanly.

A clean Hanyu is guaranteed gold (and probably a few more world records), but the question is whether he can skate cleanly, especially coming off an injury.

I was very pleasantly surprised to see NYT do a big front-page piece on a figure skater, doubly so because they chose to write about a foreign skater during the Olympic season. It was nice to see NYT embrace the true Olympic spirit of the world uniting in cheering for the people who've reached the pinnacle of what's possible for our species.

On a more prosaic note, I was surprised that Yuzuru doesn't have a car and has to ask his coach to give him a ride to get some privacy. (Did some of his diehard fans also move to Toronto because of him? I think it's one thing to move someplace to have an opportunity to see one's favorite skater skate live now and then, but actually stalking him in his daily life crosses the line from supporting a skater to doing the opposite IMO.)

I for one, am jealous of that person. To have the courage to live your life freely and do what you makes you happy without the fear of the "what-if's"/unknown is something most people lack, including myself. I'm always worried about the language barrier = lack of job opportunities.

Life is too short, tomorrow could be your last day so why not do what you want today? If it doesn't cause harm to others, go for it! We're all living on borrowed time anyways

It’s almost the anniversary of last year’s Canadian Nationals, when she told me P-Chiddy was boring her, wanted to know how Kevin Reynolds had time to be a skater AND star in Lord of the Rings, referred to Nam as “that guy who falls more as he grows more”, and then wanted to know if Yuzuru would be skating next. “BUT MOMMMM, he SKATES in Canada, he should be COMPETING in Canada at ALL the competitions answer winning ALL the gold!”

She’s a straight savage, that kid. She’ll fit in nicely around here.

I think it's actually quite common in Japan for people not to have a car or know how to drive, so I would actually be more surprised if he was driving or had a car. I think in a Mao TV special she's seen riding in the backseat with Carolina and Joannie going to Starbucks as they were doing choreography for The Ice with Lori, so it made me think Mao didn't drive either. In the older Japanese documentaries before Sochi they filmed Yuzu riding public transportation so my guess was that the plan had been just to commute to the Cricket Club using the metro and bus. I'm sure circumstances now are different and he gets a ride (or maybe he drives, who knows?) to the rink because we no longer see him on public transit in the documentary clips (that or the cut out more of the extraneous part). I assume any fans that tried to catch the bus with him might be local Canadian fans who live in Toronto already, or perhaps tourist visiting Toronto that know he trains at the Club. I do agree that if it got to the point where his private space and time were being intruded upon then it crossed a line.

Are you sure she's not the creator of the "Canada Loves Yuzu" banner I saw in Helsinki?

I have been wondering for long time actually if Yuzuru has driver's license now. Is it easy to get it in Canada? In Japan, we have to attend driving school and study the rule by the book and learn how to drive on the road in the school yard. (Parents and friends can not teach on the public road.) My friend got the license in America easier and cheaper, and transferred it to the Japanese driver's license when she came back to Japan. Does it work for Yuzuru if he is willing to do?

Mao has driver's license now, she drove by herself to the ice rink in the latter of her competitive career (and I don't have driver's license, haha)

all Hanyu have to do at olympics is to skate his 2015 programs layouts. He can get up to 115 in SP doing what he did at autumn classic this season

Looks like the story is now in the print version of The Japan Times for anyone in Japan .

They swapped out the Let's Go Crazy pic for one of Sochi, and changed the headline again but from the photos it looks like the same story. A bit interesting how the headline changes for the different markets.

While that is true, it is not like any of the others are likely to skate cleanly either. Chen and Uno have not even been close this year yet. Fernandez is hot and cold throughout his whole career. And dont even get me started on Chan or some of the others.

I agree and disagree with you. After what happened with him at Cup of China14 he managed to win GPF in 3 weeks with just one week of training and the score he got at GPF 2014 - 288.16 would have won this years GPF and thats just with one quad in sp and 2 in free, had 1 fall in both programs so it can be a good decision if he skates 2015 layout. On the other hand if he goes for easier layout he should be clean, one mistake and BV is gone, if he has mistake in harder layout , higher tes can handle more imperfections. So it is really tough to decide. Also after this years ACI Yuzu said that he made mistakes in LP because layout was simplified and he lost focus.His needs to find his mental peace , he is too sensitive of his surroundings and everything around. Its really hard but I have all the trust in his team, if anyone is able to pull off miraculous come back its him .
