Original Dance - Virtue/Moir and Davis/White - Round 2

Evidently not. Read the 4CC's CD thread. But I don't think it's quite fair to say V&M are boring, rather it's their choreography that is kind of boring. And V&M are very young, and this year they appear to have been focussing on technique most rather than presentation.

I just wish though that Tessa was the one highlighted in this dance. In a gypsy dance, isn't it the woman's movements especially with the shawl, that drives the character of the dance? Maybe even swishing that shawl skirt a bit or something. I know teams have to be careful with their props as they can get a deduction if they fall.

Perhaps because Tessa is the highlight of the FD, Team Shpilband thought they'd let have Scott have the OD? I agree that this would be a much better dance with the scarf though. I also noticed that they removed that one move where they both spin around and then Tessa slides between Scott's legs. That move made more sense when the scarf was there, and it looked really difficult, but probably wasn't worth many points since it was just a transitional move and not an element.

oh my god, and at one point during their OD I think Charlie put both his hands on Meryl's neck. I thought that added quite a nice romantic touch!! I know a lot of people have gushed about Charlie being a hunk, but I think Meryl's an exquisite beautiful herself. I actually think she's more beautiful than Tanith, because the latter just reminds me more of a Barbie doll...:) Oh and I actually wondered too if meryl had stumbled on her twizzles because I thought she usually did more turns than the two that she did here....

I hear that Meryl & Charlie got a level 3 on at least one of the step sequences, and a missed twizzle would do it to get the downgrade. It looked to me like she stumbled at the end of one of the sequences.

cassieandcheetah, at what point of the performance did you notice him do that (possibly)? I have their OD up on youtube right now to watch and I'd love to see if he did do that. That would be more proof I think for how they keep improving in connecting with each other.
Charlie is a hunk (I'm a sucker for curls so that doesn't hurt either) but you're right, Meryl really is beautiful. She has a face that you wouldn't see just anywhere; it's very unique. The two of them together have a look quite unlike any other team.
Have to say though, V/M are another good looking team! I just love him. And Tessa does not look 18 (it's weird because we're the same age) but I wonder if the make up really is to make her look older to help disguise their youth (probably a dumb, obvious statement but oh well lol).
And I noticed the stumble as well. Unusual for her isn't it? But better here than at Worlds IMO.

I'ld be happy to help you Imarie086! If you have their OD video provided on the 4C youtube thread here, it's right at around 2:05, right after they've done their combination spins. My heart stopped when I saw it. I thought it was so lovely!

You know, I got that same feeling when I saw them in the K&C after the OD. When they got their second place scores, Marina seemed to turn to them and say "Second -- well, that's good, isn't it?", and Charlie seemed to be happy with it, but it looked like Meryl really wasn't. Perhaps either she felt that they could have done better, or perhaps scored higher, or perhaps both?

Well, I like it that she's pushing herself! I mean, it must be tough on them being placed behind V/M every time and yet being so close to beating them!

I know... I commented on another thread how I feel like Tessa's grown so much since like two years back. She used to be a bit slimmer and had more of a beanpole figure, but now she looks more womanly. She almost looks as tall as Scott now, and yet he does the lifts as well as he's ever done them...I really do admire Scott....

I actually had a different video (if you look up the user teamvm they have a generous amount of both D/W and V/M videos!) so it was at a different point, but you are correct. I saw it and thought it was lovely as well!
The romantic in me wants to believe that they will fall in love some day haha.

Davis/White- I think what I love about Meryl and Charlie is that you can literally see them grow and change from one competition to the next. This was just 2 weeks after Nationals and in that time this dance is ever so slightly different- they've added small touches and expressions- it's even more playful. They did this new cool move where Charlie gets down on one knee and spins around supporting Meryl as she has her leg thrown over his other leg. They did stop a touch after the music ended but I found myself grinning after watching their performance. I have no idea if this is so- but I get the impression that Meryl has started to come into herself- all of a sudden I feel that she wants to win and she doesn't want to be the 3rd place team at the Arctic Edge anymore. There's a quiet resolve about the way she's throwing herself into these programs. I don't think Charlie's necessarily the one in charge in that skating partnership. ;)

I agree on every point you made. It's so exciting to see how they just keep improving. I love that there's always some new touch added to improve the performance, and the fact that every time we see them it's sooo much better really impresses me.
I see the same in Meryl. She's been the more reserved of the two, but I really think she's coming into herself. I don't think either of them are necessarily "in charge;" It seems like more and more of a team thing.

Oh I know. I hope they will some day too, a la Gordeeva & Grinkov, lol! :p

These teams (V/M and D/W) have been together since they were kids. They are not romantically involved off the ice now, and have never been. Think Bourne/Kraatz, not Dubreuil/Lauzon.

Maybe that's a good thing, because personal breakups tend to have an adverse effect on performance. When their romance went pffft, Marcoux and Buntin couldn't hold it together on the ice. Obertas/Slavnov teamed up because he was her boyfriend; when that romance cooled, this once-hot team fizzled out. With their retirement from eligible skating, Grushina/Goncharov's marriage ended as well.

No, no, everyone. Alissa Czisny is the girl for Charlie (my six-year-old granddaiughter says so!)

Both D&W have really improved their expression and their connection to each other. I'm really looking forward to the FD performance here, and Worlds!

I love V&M. Simply beautiful. If I really go nit picking, there is only one movement I don't like: Scott holds Tessa's leg (ankle) on his shoulder while both are stand straight and facing each other and turn. It's pretty ugly. I hate it.

The Fans of Skate Dance are all into romance as the no. 1 element for a win in the competition. The Zaretskis, the Kerrs, the Hubbells do not have a chance of winning because they are not permitted to be romantic. Not sure of that,

Joe
