Patrick Chan

Farewell, The Edge, forever! (Well, probably not, but...) Patrick said some things in a different article that came out wrong (what else is new, right?) and is now being blasted to bits in two separate threads there. Look if you want (or maybe you already have) but I don't recommend it. :slink: What are we going to do about Patrick always saying things that come across the wrong way???!!!:disapp:

I guess I'll just go watch his Ex to "Don't Worry, Be Happy."

I guess Patrick is just being Patrick as always. He is honest and I like him for that. He believes in what he says, so it's not something severe for him. People are not new to that.
I agree with many things he has said, but of course, some remarks are not really spot on but that is expected since he hasn't followed the whole field closely.
At least we know he will have upbeat short, and that is really worth looking forward to.

At least we know Patrick is preparing for next season like a champ!

The drama will blow over soon enough. The article being referenced is by an author known for serving up drama more so than actual tone of an athlete.

I will be at the Bell Center for Stars On Ice tomorrow. However, only this evening I found out I will be going out of town for the project I'm involved in, visiting a farm in Drummondville and meeting financial people in Sherbrooke, then going straight to the show in Montreal.

Briefly, I find the new report on Patrick quite interesting and revealing. He is acquiring new perspectives, experiences and wisdom that would serve him well. Of course the only focus has been on his comments on Hanyu's and Javi's Worlds programs as I expected. I don't have time to comment on this topic but will try to post my experience at the show as soon as I find some time. Really looking forward to see Patrick and so many other favorites perform live.

P.S. I was interrupted so this will actually be posted on "the next day".

Patrick's skating really is special. Even in a show staffed mostly with champion skaters, his skating was a standout.

He skates BIG, covering the ice with easy speed and amazing edges. His graceful power is so much more evident to witness live . Yet I wondered exactly what made his skating so special and beautiful and how I could describe it. It's all his movements. They are with his whole body, the wonderful coordination of arms, body and those slanted legs on crazy edges. His body turns and moves so differently from other skaters because of the combination of superior skating skills and artistry of a dancer. Much of the subtle beauty of the movements is not as obvious and easy to appreciate on video. I don't recall having noticed such quality from any of live skating I've ever watched from some of the all time best.

Another performance I really enjoyed was Shawn Sawyer's wonderful solo. Meagan and Eric were disappointing as they did not perform their difficult elements, the jumps and throw twists. A great treat was right at the beginning of the show when Kurt came out in his Rag Gidon Time clown costume and did figures right in front of me seated at the front row. A surprise pleasure was a performance by Pairs D/R and Ice Dancers W/P, switching partners at times.

 great! This is the Patrick we know. Do you mind sharing which music piece he skated to?

CSOI 2015 Music list

Patrick's programs (not from Montreal):

Dear Prudence/Blackbird

Mess Is Mine

Watching him live, it's breathtaking. I kept thinking of the oft quoted statement from judges: I could watch him for a whole day just skating around.

eta. In the long group program, Patrick's and Scott's characters hit each other and got into a duel. They weaved through the cast at super fast speed to have some close misses. Quite exciting.

Here's another comment from a fan in FSU:
"Chan was simply outstanding, so improved overall but esp., in terms of spins and his musicality, the way his whole body moved to the music, much more organic and natural. I swear he seemed to have springs in his knees, he just blew me away. He still needs to train for better consistency jump-wise, but I have been watching him for years but tonight there was something different, a magical inner light is shining now to go with all those lovely skating skills. I can't wait for his comeback, as there is true joy in his skating now, the smile is back, that was missing the last couple of seasons."

Thanks Skatefiguring for the update. I saw the you-tube on Kurt doing the figures. You must be sitting on the front row or at least not far behind. That was wonderful.

Looking out for the youtube on Patrick and Scott's duel!

Yes I was at the front row and could see the ice and the figures Kurt carved out clearly. From expecting a reprise of Rag Gidon Time to the close-up observation of school figure tracing on ice, it was a real treat. (His red clown nose kept falling off though. LOL.) Also I explained to my companion about Kurt having bragged about still wearing the same tight shiny Brick House pants from a couple of decades ago, only to be surprised by the whole male cast showing up in those pants! They got really enthusiastic wolf whistles and standing O at the end of the program.

Ashley had a bad fall right in front of me too.

A reason why Patrick's movements are so special, I believe, is due in large part to his sublime skating skills. All his movements are fully completed with beautiful details and extension in unique timing and angles with the intricate deep edged footwork. Simultaneous softness and power make his performances mesmerizing and awe inspiring. So much beauty, sophistication, and power all at the same time. No one else in the world has all it takes to perform like he does.

Great performance by Patrcik at SOI, but the CBC commentator called the jumps so wrrrrooong!

I hope I can find a version she doesn't speak at all. :bang:
How can she messed up every single jump? She couldn't tell the axel!

In the past people have criticized his coaching arrangement but clearly his work with a dance based coach has served him well. To each his (their) own.

That's it! THE JOY! There's so much JOY in Patrick's skating now. I noticed it even at JO (granted, he skated well so he had a lot to smile about, but still, I noticed a big difference in his general commitment to the program). He hasn't always shown that joy in competition, but hopefully during his comeback he will be able to and, by so doing, skate better. GREAT comment -- call me a sucker but it made me a little emotional. Patrick is such a SPECIAL skater, for the reasons SF mentioned above. I've been hooked since he was 17, but he really has improved a lot over the course of his career. Just when we think he can't get any better, he does (at least we in the Fan Fest think so). :)

Beautiful performance, but I agree, the commentator was kind of annoying messing up the jumps. I saw a 3T, 3Lz and 2A, was it right? I still get mixed up with the Flip and Lutz sometimes.

i wanted to post this group number of SOI a couple of days before, when I first watched it. in the beginning I thought the men in spot light at first was J-butt, I was like wow, crazy crazy edge maneuver and blade work and turns out he is Patrick:biggrin: And then I was like of course:biggrin: He does skate differently from others.
