Pre Bronze freestyle at AN petition

There is a group of Pre Bronze skaters from across the country who have started a petition to get the Adult Skating Committee and USFS to include the Pre Bronze freeskate at Adult Nationals.
Now, before you go off on a tirade as to why Pre Bronze skaters can't won't compete at AN, PLEASE read the text of the petition. There are some very good reasons why Pre Bronze free should be included at AN and it's all there!
BTW, not to offend any Canadian or European skaters, but to sign this petition, you need to be a member of USFS.

I'll have to give it some more thought before I sign it. As a pre-bronze skater myself, I don't think that I can honestly say that I have enough skills to put out a complete technical program. I have passed my preliminary and pre-bronze dances, and so I qualified for the Ladies Interpretive event, which is always an option for those of you who have not passed your bronze freestyle yet.

Not to offend you, but I'm not into dance and to be honest, that pasing Pre Bronze dance to do Interp is a "halfway option"
If they can offer Pre Bronze dance, why not freestyle??

Good luck with your petition!

Up here in Canada we can enter "Preliminary Interpretive" pre-everything. As a returning skater who is still trying to recover all her edges, I am THRILLED to think I can skate at the C.A.N. next year with edges and turns without having to pass any Levels.

JMHO and worth what you paid for it.

I'm a little conflicted on this.

Skating is set up so you have something to work towards, there is a goal to be met. Not everyone gets to go to Nationals, kids on the standard track aren't eligible at Pre-Pre or Preliminary or Pre-Juvenile or Juvenile or Intermediate, they have to wait until they reach Novice to be eligible for Nationals. You can't even compete at Regionals until you reach Juvenile level.

Then I think that if it keeps the numbers up it might be a good thing.

But ultimately I feel that lowering expectations is not a good thing, maybe it would bring more competitive folk into the picture if the bar was raised, let's have a true Adult Nationals competition.

My question is, did you read the text of the petition? When AN first started in 1995 or so, it was BEFORE the Pre Bronze class was added! What the skaters did technically in Bronze at AN then is for the most part what the Pre Bronzers are doing in competitions right now! Add to that, we can attend events such as Peach Classic, New Year's and all the adult competitions, including the ISU event in Obertsdorf, but not AN!
The standard track Nationals is a qualifying competition ,where AN one where you pass the tests, you go- simple as that.

I'll chime in my $0.02 worth....

I would love to go thru that route, but my problems are with Bronze moves. Good edges, flow and speed are required to pass the Bronze Moves test. If I can't pass Bronze moves, I'm doubtful that I can even pass prelim dances, much less Pre-Bronze dance. (I have a lot of respect for ice dancers b/c I skate on weekends with a bunch of ice dancers and my secondary coach is a former ice dancer. The precision of edges, extension, etc. looks easy, but it's definitely NOT!!!) :banging:

Wow I'm suprised at some of these comments. As a pre-bronze skater I support having pre-bronze included in AN. And even if I was a higher ranked skater I would support those that are working hard on their skating and just can't pass their bronze moves and freestyle. I'm one of those that have taken the adult bronze moves twice and have failed both times. I can do the moves just fine, just not as fast as the judges want. This doesn't mean because I seem to be having trouble passing my test that I haven't set any goals and want to remain a pre-bronze skater. It would be nice to have the opportunity to compete.

If they can offer Pre Bronze dance, why not freestyle??

I imagine the thinking is because Pre-Bronze is not the lowest level of dance. There is also a Preliminary level, and the pre-Bronze dances are actually quite difficult. The two that are part of NISA's test structure are at Level 4.

At the moment, there is no Preliminary free skating level for Adults. Perhaps there should be, but that's not the issue here!
