Ok...so Saturday night I was watching my all time favorite move Ice Castles.

I just love the scene where her coach yells at her for doing a triple at practice...calling it a show off move that doesn't impress the judges...or something similiar to that as I don't recall exactly what is said.

I then began to laugh and thnk how times have changed...here we are discussing the women doing triple-triple combinations and who can do the triple axel and the men doing quads.

That movie was made in 1977. Really show you how far the sport has come.

So that's my random thought for the day!!

Thanks for your thoughts. I wonder if this idea of jumps not being that important will come back to figure skating one day........

Found it on youtube for you:

I love Ice Castles as well.

Never imagined I was Lexi or Annette Brashlouw.

I was always the pissed off girl with the Dorothy Hamill bob who, jealous of Lexi's sudden success sniffed, "Where's your TV crew."

Classic stuff.

With so many remakes these days, who would you cast.
Here are my picks

Lexi - Hayden Panettiere
Nick - Chad Michael Murray
Brian - Peter Sarsgaard
Deborah - Felicity Huffmann
Beulah - Shirley MacLaine
Marcus - Kurt Russell
Sandy - Miley Ray Cyrus

Oh my...that is such great casting. Although Colleen Dewhurst, Tom Skerritt and Robby Benson are had to replace. The scene in the end where she falls on the flowers and Nick says to her "we forgot about the flowers" that scene always gets me!!
What I really like about Ice Castles was that Lynn Holly Johnson was a figure skater. Most figure skating movies now a days are with actors and figure skaters doing the stunts and even though the editing is good...you can still tell!!!

There is still a double standard. Whenever a man lands a quad, (or several), the commentators gush over him and the judges reward him, (think Jobert), but as soon as a women attempts one or even thinks of it......back to that lack of artistry thing. :rolleye:
There seems to be 2 camps in skating....Artistic and Athletic. Don't think they'll ever "blend" to the satisfaction of both. Someone once mentioned that they had considered a 50% point split between two equal length programs, (artistic and technical) before they came up with the confusing ISJ thing. Is this true? Too bad it didn't take. Seems like the best idea.

There have been several skaters who have successfully blended athletic (for their skating time) and artistic into one skater:
Brian Boitano
Kurt Browning
Katarina Witt
Kristi Yamaguchi
Nancy Kerrigan
Mao Asada
Yu Na Kim
Michelle Kwan
Chen Lu
Yuka Sato
Jill Trenary
Probably a lot more if I can think longer on it.

The skaters you mentioned were definitely some of the best "blends," so I guess it's possible. (Though I would still think a routine generally "leans" one way or the other.)
