Retirements Going Into 2015-16 Season

Oops. :o: I always thought they were identical. (Well, they looked it to me, anyway!)

Thanks for the correction!

CaroLiza_fan

It's okay.

A little biology lesson here:

Identical twins come from the same egg and split so that's why they look like each other.

Fraternal twins however come from two different eggs and so they look different.

Oh, don't worry, I knew what the difference was biologically between fraternal and identical twins.

I just couldn't tell the difference between Gracie and Carly!

You have to admit, they are extremely alike! But, I suppose that is just from having the same parents. Let's face it, there are sisters where there is an age difference that look extremely like each other. Like, you only have to look at photos of Viktoria and Joshi Helgesson from a few years ago to see this in practice (although, as they got older, you could tell the difference better).

No Gracie's identical sister is Alexa Scimeca.

:jaw: OH MY GOODNESS!!! YOU'RE RIGHT!!!

HOW DID I NOT NOTICE THAT BEFORE???!!!

She may not be that dark a brunette so maybe blonde is more flattering for her.

Maybe. I actually think her sister looks prettier most of the time, and they look very similar, so I attribute it primarily to Carly having brown or red hair as opposed to Gracie's blonde. I think the blonde washes out Gracie's extremely pale skin, whereas darker hair complements a porcelain complexion. Also, Gracie's eyes are a very dark brown, so the light blonde hair looks a bit odd IMO. I think you can pull off a dark, caramel colored blonde with dark brown eyes, but the light blonde with dark eyes is a bit jarring. I know some natural blondes DO have brown eyes, but usually the eyes are a lighter brown and they have an olive skintone as opposed to a porcelain one.

Not trying to be rude to Gracie, she's pretty enough to pull off any look honestly, but I do find her current styling to come off as a bit "plastic". I think she could be a total knockout with a darker haircolor and less makeup. But that's just my 2 cents.

Not only brown hair, but unless my eyes deceive me, flesh-colored tights over her skates. Oh, my!

aww Gracieee you couldn't!!!
In her defence it was 3 years ago she hasn't been noticed in that crime since! And it is not the worst way, please see these:

BTW if this was Gracie's natural hair colour I definetely like it better than blond

I have to agree with you and that's why the contest between Kiira & Gracie is won by Kiira (IMHO) every time she is just so natural. Also her costumes are more original, show her individuality whereas Gracie's dresses are very pretty but actually a variation of the same theme in slightly different designs & colours.

To remember Kiira - lots of pics here:

Don't worry. After that excursion off topic, I'm bringing this thread back on track.

We had another couple of retirements announced last night via Facebook. And it took me totally by surprise:

Caitlin Yankowskas and Hamish Gaman (GBR)

https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=973799759346603&id=836772759715971

OK, so they had not been together for long (2 seasons). And they had both been around the block a few times. And Hamish in particular isn't getting any younger. But, this team did look promising. So, it is a real shame that the road has had to end in this fashion. :disapp:

And how ironic that this news came just days after we were praising Caitlin's former long-term partner on his commentary skills! (John Coughlin, 2007-2011)

All the best to both Caitlin and Hamish for the future.

Sorry to hear about Caitlin and Hamish. I know that they were having serious financial issues
this season.

Best of luck to both of them in the future.

We'll never know for sure why they split, but John made such a huge mistake in doing so. None made the Olympics in Sochi which is obviously what they were both gunning for and I feel very strongly they could have done that easily had they stuck together until 2014.

Such a shame.

Oh I am really sorry to hear this!

Actually I've read more about the split now and I'm not so much sorry as disgusted. If I understand correctly their federation was not giving them ANY FUNDING AT ALL? Despite the fact that they are British National Champions? What a waste. It's not like they were mind blowingly good or anything but they'd only been together one season and it's not like Britain has any better options. Who else is there? Fancy and Boyajdi? Give me a break.

NISA has no money for funding individual skaters - their role is to develop the sport at grassroots levels, and they don't even have a lot of money to do that, because skating is not a popular sport in the UK. Funding for elite athletes comes from UKSport, and they are required to target money at skaters who can finish in the top 10 at Worlds, and in the long term challenge for World and Olympic medals. National champion means nothing, you have to show you are able to fight with the best internationally as well. So the only skaters who have funding are Penny & Nick, & I believe Joe & Olivia had some second tier funds from the pool for long term prospects before they split. I don't think Amani & Chris get anything.

I really liked Caitlin & Hamish, their SP at Euros last season was gorgeous, but they weren't at the top of the sport and given their ages they weren't a long term prospect either, and considering how little money there is to support skaters in the UK, it's probably right that it was going elsewhere.

I believe you that this is true, but I still think it's wrong. I could blather on but am not sure it's necessary, as my thinking it's wrong isn't going to change it. This does explain why Britain's skaters and skating program overall have seemed in such a rut for years.

Didn't Kemp and King have some issues with a lack of funding too? Correct me if I'm wrong, as I don't know much about them but I think I remember someone mentioning that on this forum or another.

Wait, Joseph and Olivia split? When did that happen?

I echo what everybody else has been saying. It is a Catch 22 situation. You only get funding if you are at the top levels of the sport, but you can only get to the top levels of the sport if you have funding.

But, it is the same with practically every sport in the UK. There isn't enough money to go around, so they put it into those select few that have realistic chances of doing well on the international scene.

And that is why we don't see much going to figure skating!

Wait, Joseph and Olivia split? When did that happen?

Yep. It was back in July. Here is the thread I started to announce it:
