FAQ

Q: Where are the time schedules/starting orders/livestream links for (domestic competition)?
A: Will be posted when they are available on this thread, except for the Ranking Competition and Nationals, which will have their own threads.

Q: Isn't there an entries/live results page for (domestic competition)?
A: No, there isn't. To be precise, the KSU isn't sharing the link they use for the officials. That's why I post all the necessary info in text form.

Q: What exactly are all those domestic competitions and why are there so many of them?
A: To answer the latter first, it's because 1) KSU would rather make skaters compete and use the results than take the time and effort to come up with selection criteria and 2) they exist not only for the top elite skaters but for Korean skaters in general. Short rundown of the major domestic competitions mentioned above:
- JGP Selections: decides who gets JGP tickets.
- Ranking Competition: one of the two criteria for National Team selection and doubles as Olympics and 4CC selections.
- Nationals: the other criterion for National Team selection and doubles as Olympics and Worlds selections.
-National Figure Skating Competition: competition of a national scale that is of less import than the Ranking Competition or Nationals. Will include much fewer internationally recognized names.
- National Winter Sports Festival: a multi-sport national event under the Korean Sports & Olympic Committee's (not the KSU's) jurisdiction. Skaters have to qualify via regional qualifiers and it's technically the 'biggest' domestic competition scale-wise. Is of import especially because the results of NWSF can be used for the skater's college portfolio.

Q: Do skaters have to do all these domestic competitions?
A: The Ranking Competition and Nationals are a must if you want to be a part of next season's NT and get to compete in 4CC/Worlds(+Olympics), there is no bye system. Selection competitions are also required if the skater wishes to be selected, obviously. NWSF is as mentioned necessary for college portfolios. I know there are always concerns regarding injuries/health issues because of all the competitions but 1)the system is pretty much fixed and 2)it's not just all the competing that causes injuries/health issues, it's more complicated than that.

Q: Why do non-senior eligible skaters compete as seniors in domestic competitions?
A: Korea has a 'level' system called 급수 in Korean and it signifies the 'level' of a skater's skills. For example, to gain the 7th level a woman must be able to jump 2 out of 3Lo/3F/3Lz and a man must be able to jump a 3-3 combination (as well as the requirements for the lower levels, it goes without saying). There are up to 8 levels, and 7th and 8th level skaters are considered domestic seniors regardless of their age. Similarly 5th and 6th level skaters are considered domestic juniors regardless of age. Also of note, you need to be 7th level or higher to get international assignments for major competitions including the JGP circuit.

Q: Why isn't there a Korean pairs team?
A: Lack of male skaters, support, resources, coaching know-how, etc. Cho Hyejin (who lives and trains abroad) does exist and the last we heard of her she teamed up with Russian pairs man Rodion Marinskii, but he will not be able to be released and get citizenship in time (if they still plan to compete as a team) and thus the Olympics are out of the question. I wish it wasn't so, but so far it is what it is. Also, just in case somebody is curious: creating a unified team with the NK pairs team as in Pyeongchang is extremely unlikely, that happened because the Olympics took place on the Korean peninsula and the political situation happened to work out. As Milano is located in a different peninsula and so far the new government isn't that amicable with the people up north, I am not expecting it to happen.

Things of Note

- As of time of writing the situation regarding Kwon Minsol's country change is unclear, she still trains in Canada but no official news of transfer has come out. Fans had reported of her intention to compete at Nationals last season but it didn't happen, we will see if she appears at JGP selections or a transfer announcement comes out.
- A list of competing* senior eligible singles skaters is posted below. Kim Seoyoung was present at a Candian domestic competition but same as Minsol, no official news. Ordered by age, those without their 7th level as of time of writing are not included.
* - not announced as retired

- Men: Lee Sihyeong, Cha Junhwan, Cha Younghyun, Lim Juheon, Park Hyunseo, Kim Hyungyeom, Lee Jaekeun, Kim Aaron
- Women: You Young, Lee Haein, Ji Seoyeon, Kim Chaeyeon, Kim Minchae, Kim Seoyoung, Yun Ahsun, Song Siwoo, Shin Jia, Han Heesue

- Another list, this time for singles skaters who could appear at JGP selections. Those with a * have to pass their level test in time.

- Men: Lee Jaekeun, Seo Minkyu, Choi Habin, Yu Donghan, Park Hyunseo, Kim Aaron, Kim Taehwan*, Kim Yesung*, Lee Yunho*, Chung Jaewook*
- Women: Kim Yuseong, Kim Yujae, Youn Seojin, Ko Nayeon, Hwang Jeongyul, Kim Geonhee, Lee Jiyoon, Huh Jiyu, Lee Hyorin, Song Siwoo, Park Eunbi, Jang Harin, Park Inkyong, Kim Jiyu, Lee Eun, Joo Hyewon, Kim Minsong, Lee Hyowon, Lee Gyuri, Park Hayoung, Han Heesue, Kim Yui, Jung Subeen, Cha Doi*, Kim Gaeun*, Kim Soohyun*

- Lastly, notice of sorts regarding OP(Ichat, yours truly)'s availability: I have a deadline for my manuscript (to be finished before the year ends) and other real life issues, I will be much more present when the season begins (because I apparently enjoy pain and suffering) but I will have less time for FS overall and will be practically absent during the off-season. So if you have questions regarding Korean skating that aren't answered above, either a knowledgeable soul will appear in my place or google (with machine translations, if needed) will have to suffice.

Thank you for all of this :love3:

For upcoming Canadian domestic competitions with Korean skaters:

- Minsol Kwon is entered for the Skate Ontario July competition for Junior Women in both the short and the free
- Seoyoung Kim is entered for the Skate BC/YT June competition happening this week

These are non-qualifying competitions and non-Canadian skaters are allowed to skate in them. Also Skate Ontario is a week after Skate Canada's NextGen competition. If Minsol were switching, I'd expect her to be there and not Skate Ontario July. The Granite Club skaters (Kara Yun, David Bondar, Kemp/Elizarov) who are likely to be at NextGen are not competing here, so I'm leaning towards no switch.

Oh I'm glad to see Minsol there :love3:

Minsol Kwon is also entered for Skate Ontario August under Senior Women.

The July competition will not be streamed and August will be a paid stream. I have no idea if they're going back to the platform that didn't archive as well as Dailymotion.

The JGP Selection Competition will be held on July 21 and July 22, together with the Selection competition for the Olympic qualifying event (only men).

(Skate Ontario July Sectionals is being held from July 25-27, so I think it's likely Minsol will only attend one of these competitions and not both.)

That is why I think she is transitioning to Canada. I think this will be her one event and then she will debut as a Senior Women for Canada for the next Olympic cycle. I guess it takes at least two seasons to become a Canadian citizen these days.

Else, she would clearly have competed at JGP Korean selections. We will see…

So if you have questions regarding Korean skating that aren't answered above, either a knowledgeable soul will appear in my place or google (with machine translations, if needed) will have to suffice.
Thanks for the information. Do you know if there is a good possibility that Jia Shin will get a second Grand Prix assignment at Finlandia or is she only receiving one assignment?

Thanks for the information. Do you know if Jia Shin is only going to participate in 1 Grand Prix event, Cup of China, or is she possibly going to skate in the Finlandia Trophy since it is currently left blank?
The spots currently left blank are host spots, and Finland has more than enough Senior skaters to fill both open spots. Jia will likely only get a second spot if another skater has to withdraw, she's currently second on the replacement list for GP de France, SCI, SkAm and Finlandia Trophy, and first for NHK Trophy.

Things of Note
- No junior ID teams, which is sad. Namu is still looking for a partner so
- With Jaekeun going for the Olympic Qualifying Competition instead of the JGP (i.e. going full senior) and not enough 6th level men getting their 7th levels in time, only 5 junior men are competing and thus everyone will get 2 tickets. Again, 4 tickets will be left unused, which is also sad.
- No Minsol, which is sad but expected. Also Hyorin (who seems to be active but injured guessing by the state of her summer competition skate, she skated a new La La Land FS but did only doubles), Siwoo (wasn't likely to be selected in the first place, is in her last junior eligible season and in 12th grade, thus could be considering retirement), Heesue (appeared in photos of Team Choi so probably not yet retired, guessing that the injury is not yet fully healed), Yui (could be retired, no official news but no appearances either), and my beloved Inkyong (active but rehabilitating from knee surjury since February) are not appearing. I would've liked to see them but the competition is fierce enough without them, I'll just have to wait until the Ranking Competition or beyond.
- Ichat, your truly, is going to be at the rink, she will post the livestream links ASAP once they've appeared and will post protocols as soon as KSU uploads official results of the day on their homepage. For live updates and immediate results posts please check out @skatingkor on twitter, their segment results posts will also be linked on this thread.

Jihu Yoo / Zachary Grant were still skating together as of May, learning new programs and lifts, so I wonder why they're not competing here.

Also, I thought we might see Hye-Jin Cho / Rodion Marinskii here as they'd still be eligible for both Juniors & Seniors this season, but I'm not even fully sure they're still skating together or how his release went if he applied for one.

I have many questions regarding junior ID, not only are Yoo/Grant missing at JGP selections but the team of Kim/Ying has just disappeared, how is that the only bit of certainty is the fact that Namu is still searching for a partner... :dbana:

Hyejin and her maybe current partner wouldn't have come anyways because we don't have JGP tickets for pairs, I also have no idea what is going on with them and thus have given up trying to guess. How I wish Steven Adcock had a healthy back and hadn't retired...

Yeah, I wonder what happened to Kim/Ying too, they looked promising in that one video we have of them. I'm hoping Jinny didn't quit skating completely, as was initially assumed, but it seems like she's also not actively looking for a partner either.

All ISU members get JGP spots for all disciplines regardless of their results last season, no? I think it would be 3 spots total for pairs. But yeah, no idea what's going on with them. If she's partnerless again, I hope she finds someone new soon, and if they're still together, I'm looking forward to seeing them at competitions.

It's for the Olympic Qualifier, so he isn't eligible to compete in it since it has to be someone who didn't qualify a spot already.

No Sihyeong though :(
OH... gosh... i read too fast... thanks... one of these days... thank goodness i don't have to work tomorrow lol... i am burned out

According to this article, Chaeyeon Kim will also be competing at the Skate Ontario August competition, along with Lombardia and Nepela Memorial - https://mfocus.kr/sports/skating/25098/

Official entry lists for Ontario are supposed to be up by July 25, so it should be confirmed then.

Jia Shin will also be competing at Cranberry Cup for her Senior international debut and will also be at Nebelhorn.

(also Minsol is confirmed not to be at NextGen, so back to waiting)
