FAQ
Q: Where are the time schedules/starting orders/livestream links for (domestic competition)?
A: Will be posted when they are available on this thread, except for the Ranking Competition and Nationals, which will have their own threads.
Q: Isn't there an entries/live results page for (domestic competition)?
A: No, there isn't. To be precise, the KSU isn't sharing the link they use for the officials. That's why I post all the necessary info in text form.
Q: What exactly are all those domestic competitions and why are there so many of them?
A: To answer the latter first, it's because 1) KSU would rather make skaters compete and use the results than take the time and effort to come up with selection criteria and 2) they exist not only for the top elite skaters but for Korean skaters in general. Short rundown of the major domestic competitions mentioned above:
- JGP Selections: decides who gets JGP tickets.
- Ranking Competition: one of the two criteria for National Team selection and doubles as Olympics and 4CC selections.
- Nationals: the other criterion for National Team selection and doubles as Olympics and Worlds selections.
-National Figure Skating Competition: competition of a national scale that is of less import than the Ranking Competition or Nationals. Will include much fewer internationally recognized names.
- National Winter Sports Festival: a multi-sport national event under the Korean Sports & Olympic Committee's (not the KSU's) jurisdiction. Skaters have to qualify via regional qualifiers and it's technically the 'biggest' domestic competition scale-wise. Is of import especially because the results of NWSF can be used for the skater's college portfolio.
Q: Do skaters have to do all these domestic competitions?
A: The Ranking Competition and Nationals are a must if you want to be a part of next season's NT and get to compete in 4CC/Worlds(+Olympics), there is no bye system. Selection competitions are also required if the skater wishes to be selected, obviously. NWSF is as mentioned necessary for college portfolios. I know there are always concerns regarding injuries/health issues because of all the competitions but 1)the system is pretty much fixed and 2)it's not just all the competing that causes injuries/health issues, it's more complicated than that.
Q: Why do non-senior eligible skaters compete as seniors in domestic competitions?
A: Korea has a 'level' system called 급수 in Korean and it signifies the 'level' of a skater's skills. For example, to gain the 7th level a woman must be able to jump 2 out of 3Lo/3F/3Lz and a man must be able to jump a 3-3 combination (as well as the requirements for the lower levels, it goes without saying). There are up to 8 levels, and 7th and 8th level skaters are considered domestic seniors regardless of their age. Similarly 5th and 6th level skaters are considered domestic juniors regardless of age. Also of note, you need to be 7th level or higher to get international assignments for major competitions including the JGP circuit.
Q: Why isn't there a Korean pairs team?
A: Lack of male skaters, support, resources, coaching know-how, etc. Cho Hyejin (who lives and trains abroad) does exist and the last we heard of her she teamed up with Russian pairs man Rodion Marinskii, but he will not be able to be released and get citizenship in time (if they still plan to compete as a team) and thus the Olympics are out of the question. I wish it wasn't so, but so far it is what it is. Also, just in case somebody is curious: creating a unified team with the NK pairs team as in Pyeongchang is extremely unlikely, that happened because the Olympics took place on the Korean peninsula and the political situation happened to work out. As Milano is located in a different peninsula and so far the new government isn't that amicable with the people up north, I am not expecting it to happen.
Things of Note
- As of time of writing the situation regarding Kwon Minsol's country change is unclear, she still trains in Canada but no official news of transfer has come out. Fans had reported of her intention to compete at Nationals last season but it didn't happen, we will see if she appears at JGP selections or a transfer announcement comes out.
- A list of competing* senior eligible singles skaters is posted below. Kim Seoyoung was present at a Candian domestic competition but same as Minsol, no official news. Ordered by age, those without their 7th level as of time of writing are not included.
* - not announced as retired
- Men: Lee Sihyeong, Cha Junhwan, Cha Younghyun, Lim Juheon, Park Hyunseo, Kim Hyungyeom, Lee Jaekeun, Kim Aaron
- Women: You Young, Lee Haein, Ji Seoyeon, Kim Chaeyeon, Kim Minchae, Kim Seoyoung, Yun Ahsun, Song Siwoo, Shin Jia, Han Heesue
- Another list, this time for singles skaters who could appear at JGP selections. Those with a * have to pass their level test in time.
- Men: Lee Jaekeun, Seo Minkyu, Choi Habin, Yu Donghan, Park Hyunseo, Kim Aaron, Kim Taehwan*, Kim Yesung*, Lee Yunho*, Chung Jaewook*
- Women: Kim Yuseong, Kim Yujae, Youn Seojin, Ko Nayeon, Hwang Jeongyul, Kim Geonhee, Lee Jiyoon, Huh Jiyu, Lee Hyorin, Song Siwoo, Park Eunbi, Jang Harin, Park Inkyong, Kim Jiyu, Lee Eun, Joo Hyewon, Kim Minsong, Lee Hyowon, Lee Gyuri, Park Hayoung, Han Heesue, Kim Yui, Jung Subeen,Cha Doi*, Kim Gaeun*, Kim Soohyun*
- Lastly, notice of sorts regarding OP(Ichat, yours truly)'s availability: I have a deadline for my manuscript (to be finished before the year ends) and other real life issues, I will be much more present when the season begins (because I apparently enjoy pain and suffering) but I will have less time for FS overall and will be practically absent during the off-season. So if you have questions regarding Korean skating that aren't answered above, either a knowledgeable soul will appear in my place or google (with machine translations, if needed) will have to suffice.
