My thoughts on Roman's breakthrough result at ACI are still horribly jumbled (I still haven't recovered from the excitement :p ), but I should at least say that I'm so proud of him for getting Personal Bests in the short, long and total  , and for his determination to try to overcome his height-related jump issues when I've encountered many individuals who spew dismissive things like, "He has no future in singles skating, he should give up and switch to ice dance." :rolleye: I don't deny that I was very worried about the technical side of his skating post-growth spurt, but I absolutely REFUSED to give up on him, and I didn't care if his detractors had branded me a "silly fangirl" for my unwavering faith. His Fan Fest would sometimes go through long periods where I was the sole person who was posting anything, and I was heartbroken for days whenever Roman had a poor competition (which was often).

But still, I never lost my devotion, and now, seeing Roman standing on the same podium as Yuzuru Hanyu... that bronze medal was practically gold for him! 🥉 The depth of his talent and his potential that I had continued to recognize despite it being somewhat "buried" by his numerous setbacks is finally rising to the surface! :yahoo: It will take time, more experience and hell of a lot of work, of course, but he really does have the necessary "ingredients" to be, at minimum, the best men's singles skater in Canada, and if the figure skating gods are especially kind  , the world as well. Roman models much of his skating on Jeff Buttle's, and beyond their obvious similarities, I truly believe that this young man can be as great as (maybe even greater than?) his hero!

Just to add to the strong connection between Roman and Buttle, the latter had skated to "Prelude in C Sharp Minor/The Bells of Moscow" for his SP during the 2004-2005 season, so the former's new LP is the third occasion that I'm aware of where Roman has used his idol's music for a program. (The first is "Sing Sing Sing" for his 2011-2012 novice SP, which was Jeff's 2005-2006 SP, and Roman's "Fix You" exhibition number from last year was inspired by Buttle performing to the same song at the 2006 Canadian Championships.)

During Roman's ACI free skate, Debbi Wilkes compared him to Mikhail Baryshnikov, and Ted Barton agrees. I'm not familiar with the ballet world, but I'm aware that Baryshnikov is considered to be one of its best male dancers. For those of you who are knowledgeable about Baryshnikov's career, do you think the commentators were exaggerating slightly, or do you believe that there's indeed something about Roman's skating now that is Baryshnikov-like?

Skate Canada's IG story has a clip of Roman finding out he medalled and it's so precious ( i may or may not have watched it multiple times...)

If you did, then you're not the only one. ;)

Wouldn’t it be great if he became Canada’s top men’s skater this season?

I didn't know much of Roman before this competition but he looked like Canada's next star to me. A lovely skater :agree2:

I'm glad that his skating has impressed you. :)

Rewatching Roman’s FS without being distracted by Nepela allowed me to appreciate the nuances I missed live. What a gorgeous program for him. When he skates it to perfection or near perfection, it’s guaranteed to make me cry.

So will I! I had said in this thread during the spring of 2017 that Roman's skating will make me shed tears one day.

Not changing your name to 4everRoman?

If 4everchan ever decides to change his username, it will be 4everphan (his nickname for Joseph Mini-Chiddy).

I think all in all he may have been the happiest person in Canada that day...

Agreed! It's totally adorable how much of a Yuzu fanboy Roman is.

Of all the fancams of the ACI Men Medal Ceremony that I've seen on YouTube, I think this one has the best camera angle (although the person who filmed it has somewhat shaky hands): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fb5FJrlbb7s I love the moment where Roman is so distracted by Yuzu that he doesn't notice that the SC official is trying to award him his bronze medal!

Yuzu allows Roman to lean on him when the latter wants to put on his skate guards: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUc6okW-tkM

My mom also though Roman was Jeff Bittle re-encarnate!

She kept asking if it was his choreo too.

Ziotic, our mothers think alike! Just to add context, my mom isn't a big fs fan like me, but she does sometimes watch the highlights shown on Canadian television from the Canadian Championships, Worlds and the Olympics. I recommended that she watch Roman's ACI SP, and I asked her if this young skater reminded her of anyone. Afterwards, she said:

Her: Has this video been altered?

Me: No, why do you ask?

Her: Because it looks like someone had CGI-ed another person's head unto Buttle's body.

:laugh2:

But seriously, though, even though my mother isn't a devotee of the sport, she was able to tell right away how similar Roman's skating style is to Jeff's. She now jokingly refers to Roman as a Jeff Buttle clone. :p

As an aside, she asked me who Roman's coach was, and I replied it's Tracey Wainman. My mother then exclaimed, "Oh, I remember watching her win the national title at age 13!" She thinks it's great that he's being trained by what she considers to be one of the most talented Canadian women's singles skaters that she has ever seen.

For those of you who live in or around Toronto, I apologize again for not noticing this information about Attainment (the short film Roman stars in) early enough. It was screened at the Toronto Youth Shorts Festival on Sep. 22 ( https://www.torontoyouthshorts.ca/searching-for-belonging.html ), which is coincidentally the same day that he won his ACI bronze medal. The synopsis is: A world-class figure skater dreams of greatness while struggling to maintain his mental and physical health.

I also found a more detailed summary for Attainment here: https://cinemaaxis.com/2018/09/20/toronto-youth-shorts-2018-sneak-peek/

A better example of the importance of trusting in the audience is Michael Boroda's Attainment. Very little is explained in the film, there is not even an ounce of dialogue, but the film manages to pack an emotional punch. The story focuses on a figure skater who dreams of being the best, but his reality tells a different story. Juxtaposing the skater's recollections of preparing for a competition with his declining physical condition, Boroda paints an intriguing portrait of a man not willing to mentally give up on his dreams even when his body makes those aspirations seemingly unattainable.

Here's a 7-second clip of Roman from the short film:

I'm not 100% sure about this, but I think Jeff's Ararat FS was the last time a Canadian skater had performed to music from a movie about genocide for a competitive program (for those of you who are unfamiliar with it, it's a 2002 Canadian film about the Armenian genocide). It's quite likely that Roman wanted to follow in his hero's footsteps by choosing Schindler's List, one of the most famous movies about the Holocaust, for his own LP.

Roman's interview with Figure Skaters Online after his ACI SP: http://figureskatersonline.com/news/2018/09/27/autumn-classic-mixed-zone-reaction/

This was the first time competing after Nationals, I was nervous, but I think it went well. I'm happy with the score given that I made mistakes, so I have room to score higher. The Axel has been such a struggle for me for years, but finally this year it's coming along well in practice, so I would like to show it in competition. The Salchow is my favorite jump.

I have settled into my new height, I stopped growing and filled out, I gained weight in muscles and feel more comfortable, more athletic.

It's hard to try to find a balance between jumps and transitions. David Wilson choreographed the SP, Mark Pillay did the free. I added some variations to the spins, to get high levels and GOEs.

The biggest challenge for the FS will be surviving, now that they cut 30 seconds. My choreographer did a really good job in planning the elements so that I have 3 jumps, then the steps that go well with the music, but also allow me to recuperate before the next quad, I feel comfortable going into it.

In this short clip, you can see better how utterly thrilled Roman is to be standing on the same podium as Yuzu: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6uvyjn

You get the feeling the whole thing, the great skate, the scores, the podium, it was all a dream come true, and it brings to mind that other teenager so utterly thrilled with his bronze some years ago (okay, Roman is a bit big to bounce... but I think he wanted to!)

Here's wishing it as a good omen, and the start of wonderful things for him

Roman will be competing at the Inge Solar Memorial, his second Challenger of the season. The field is very heavy on juniors going for TES minimums, with Roman and Maxim Kovtun the most notable seniors.

This is such great news! :yes2: Since he most likely won't get a 2nd GP assignment, this is the best he can hope for in terms of fall competitions.

Only 8 more days until #SCI18!! https://www.facebook.com/SkateCanada/photos/a.476247807038/10155837272652039/?type=3&theater

Here's my 1080p fancam of Roman's gorgeous SCI SP afternoon practice :luv17: (I wasn't able to attend the morning practice where he performed his LP):

Oh, his skating is even more heavenly in person! It was cold and windy today, and it takes me 2 hours and 15 minutes to commute to Laval (so I lose 4.5 hours travelling in one day), but seeing this live warmed by fandom heart and it made the long trip worthwhile! :party2: This is the only time in my life where I got to sit in the second row from the boards (and that was genuinely my seat as listed on my ticket) at a major skating competition, and WOW, the view is incredible! I'll sadly be in the nosebleed section for tomorrow's and Saturday's events, but it was a delightful experience to be so close to the rink and observe in great detail all the skaters.
