Sasha: A Case of Mao fear?

actually it was just an excuse to use that particular emoticon :p

But seriously, why are we talking about something which, again, is "the past"?

(oh yeah, I forgot...it's that time of year. :indiff:  )

 I love Sasha talk:p

I don't think Sasha was physically tired so much as mentally exhausted from all the pressure to become "America's next gold medalist," "America's sweetheart," "Olympic favorite," etc.

Sasha 'taking a season off' (aka 'retiring'......) has nothing to do with fear of anybody, but everything to do with the realisation that she can make more money in movies/TV before breakfast on one day than in an entire season of competitive skating.
Much easier, too......

 not to mention it's a potentially quick road to fame

Well, acting certainly isn't easy and requires talent. I can't imagine Sasha having a serious acting career.

I think sasha is kind of afraid of the young skaters, not only of mao, she had her first national title in 2006 and kimmie became world champion the same year, so sasha was afraid of loosing her national title in 2007.
She is a wonderful skater, but I don't think she will be as strong as the other skaters in 2 years...I don't think she will come back, if she come back, she will probably not be in the top skater...

These discussions about fear are ridiculous- sorry. Cohen didn't fear Kwan did she? In all those years she was bridesmaid to her- slave to her? Why would she suddenly "fear" Asada, Kim, et al? If she does she really should just give it up (officially that is). Oh wait, maybe she's afraid that if she does people will forget about her, and she'll simply be the "silver belle". It's just leaving the door ajar to get her acting "career" going.

It'll be funny to see what she thinks if she winds up in, say 2013 where Tara is now. A distant memory of the past, couple acting gigs, out of the public eye...not a good thing for miss Attention Seeker.

^As tainted with good comments as some of your posts are regarding Sasha:eek: , I am still surprised that you even read a thread with Sasha's name in the title.

It's not SASHA that got me to click...it was the word "FEAR" that got me to click. It's a really stupid thought. Sorry for the harsh words, but I just don't see one of these skaters fearing her competition. If so she should just get out.

I would say out of 5 of my guy friends, 3 of them questioned whether Tara was a gymnast when I first mentioned her to them in the past year or so. Thinking that was what she won the OGM in. But then looked at me like, who am I questioning about FS? They all new who Sasha was. Some referred to her with the question "is that the hot skater that still looks like she is 14:laugh: "

I agree with you RD, Sasha does not fear others IMO, she might be more likely in fear of herself. She is after all - I believe - her own worst critic. But I don't think she has met you yet RD:laugh:

And in that harshness I see some good points - often. :agree:

well Duh - Cohen is fresher in their minds- she finished competing yesterday, whereas Tara hasn't competed for 7-8 years. But let's wait 20 years and see who's more remembered. Tara, because of the record she set would hardly be forgotten. Cohen, on the other hand- I don't remember her doing anything or accomplishing something that will keep her in peoples' memories for years to come. Now, someone like Kwan will be remembered for a long time (self-explanatory).

IIRC, Sasha had to drop out of '01 Nats with a back injury; she had to drop out of her GP events leading into '05 Worlds for the same reason. IMO, Sasha (or any other skater with sense) will be afraid of the effect on the body of all the technical demands now imposed on ladies skaters.

True. But I will say I think Sasha will stay in the minds of people longer than Tara does / did. JMO Even if that is just because - although you may disagree - Sasha is really stinking beautiful.

And 4 of these friends I was thinking of are in there 30s.

well, we'll just have to wait 20 years and see who's right, now shan't we?

Tara has an OGM, a World Champion and was one of two competitors who really gave Kwan a run for her money in her prime. (The other one being, umm, you know already ;) ).

Cohen- ??? well I guess she did win that one national championship but many folks will say she won it only because...you guessed it...KWAN WASN'T THERE

 :agree: I do think that "shan't" stands for "shall not" but I get the drift.;)

That I think is more hard core fans. Some it is only the status as a top - regardless of thee top or not - skaters in the world. Let's face it, if it was only SPs that were the event that decides, she would have more medals than many. And if heart to continue, wipe it off and keep going, she has achieved a lot.

A lot of that fame she has does not - in my mind - only come from her titles achieved. Some I believe is the beauty in which she skates with - so elegant with a touch of brat  - that make her face stand in the minds of so many. Some girls I think are the living end, people don't always agree to the degree I do, so I feel there is nothing wrong in some not thinking she is gorgeous. But most males do as I can see. And a lot of women too. I mean, come one, they try to make pretty little dolls that look like Sasha does. She is a stunner in most peoples eyes. That has a lot to do with her popularity IMO.

BOT, I think she "fears" no one. But she also is not brainless to think she would have a easy time of grasping the podium in this rheum of skaters either.:agree:

Sasha doesn't 'fear' other skaters, but she IS a realist. If she couldn't beat Kimmie and Fumie, how the heck is she going to beat Mao, Yu-Na and a rejuvenated Miki? She isn't ready to make a decision about returning to competition yet, but at some point (likely a year from now), she will, and I'm sure the depth of the competition she will face will enter into that decision.

Remember, in 2009 Sasha would have to beat Kimmie AND Caroline AND Rachael AND Mirai AND whoever else has emerged from the pack, to even have a shot at facing the Asian top dogs at Worlds. Many of those US skaters already have successfully landed 3/3s and the others are working on them. At 24, Sasha will be long past the point where she could easily upgrade her skills enough to keep pace with the youngsters, and she will have enough trouble just getting back her jumps.

As to who is more famous, Tara or Sasha, even now, people are saying "Tara WHO?" But that is now. If Sasha's film career is more successful than Tara's, of course Sasha will be remembered in 10 years. If not, both of their names will fade away with the general public.

Of course, Sasha wanted to beat everyone in 2002 Olys. It didn't happen because of Sarah Hughes. Then came DC Worlds and it was Kwan, then came Dortmund and it was Arakawa, then came Moscow and it was Slutskaya. Then came the 2006 Olys and it was Arakawa again. Finally with all the former winners gone, she should have walked away with Calgary World but it was Meissner.

Since her heart was set on Gold, I can understand the disappointments, and I don't think she is ready to face another possible loss because of the up&coming Asian Ladies. She remains, imo, a very beautiful skater with or without the big ones.

How she fares in the tougher movie business (star must sell tickets!) will have to wait until there are more films with good critical reviews.

Joe
