In most of the moves and positions in figure skating, the ladies has their legs wrapped around their heads, they have to do that in order for them to get the points. Its a part of figure skating, they are not going to get the points by just skating around the ice. Personally, I think the moves are beautiful and those that can't do it, probably wishes that they could.:)

Actually, most figure skating moves ARE NOT with the "ladies leg wrapped around their head" as you state. What you are seeing is the ladies are trying to do these moves because they garner more points under Cop. Big difference.

What troubles me with the awarding of points for flexiblility is very few skaters can do the big jumps and flex but yet both items are expected.

Mao, Yukari, Yu-Na are of only a few, but they as so young, is it possible for them to keep up with this requirement over the next four years?

Sasha indeed is the inspiration for these types of moves, as she earned points in the; 6.0 system long program with flexing. Those extra points overcame the reduction of points due to the falls. Now, here she is facing a world of skaters who can flex and jump.

Wow? Hmmm ?

Now THAT's something I can agree with

Applies more to jumps than anything else though- but I must admit, those jump faces are funny :laugh:

Sasha is hyped all over the Olympic Website and I just got the latest issue of SKATING (the USFSA magazine) with HER picture on the cover with Evan, Tim, Kimmie, G&P, O&L, I&B but NO KWAN.

Will the Cohen hype put the uneasy pressure on her for Torino?

I was thinking the same thing. WHERE'S KWAN? isn't she supposedly FIGURE SKATING to certain fans? Where'd she go?

No- all of a sudden it's COHEN all over the place. Look for covers in newspapers, Sports Illustrated, news programs, perhaps even Time or Newsweek magazine. I think she will be under the real pressure, especially if she wins Nats next year. I think this further nails it in the coffin for her- 2006 WILL NOT be an OGM year for Sasha

She does say she likes the press, though, so I think she will get her wish this year. But she's not exactly a clutch performer.

It's just my opinion- hence why I preceded the phrase with I THINK. Anyway, other posters have said far "worse" things about Cohen, yet I don't see them being jumped on

I think, if they're going to start hyping Cohen, it takes the pressure off Kwan, lets Kwan relax and go in as underdog and hopefully skate very well to even be on the podium. Cohen will get all that attention and doggone it, she might just flubbed up. But sincerely, I hope she does beat Irina and wins gold. And I hope Irina beats Cohen. But above all else, I hope that's not the ending pose because I don't like it.:laugh:

Agree, hyping Cohen is the best thing for all other competiitors. Sheesh, SC has been hyped as the next one for y e a r s an never could. Doncha think ?

besides, she'll never miss a camera opportunity, on or off ice

Michelle received the highest honor from USFS last year at nationals...She hasn't shown she is fully committed to 06 or future eligible competitions...USFS needs to have a leading role to Italy...Sasha so far is the best candidate...she is well trained and highly motivated....
 
Michelle is a legend in her own time. She doesn't need hype and she never looked for it. but nowadays, that's gone so let's enjoy Ms Cohen's season in the sun.

Any news of these two divas going to Calgary? and more?

If Michelle has been dropped by the Olympic hype-sters, maybe they know something we don't. Maybe Michelle has already told USFS that she will not be able to compete in Turino.

Or maybe they know the same thing that we do know. That in her last outing Michelle was not able to skate well enough to make the podium at U.S. Nationals or to be a factor at the Olympics.

USFS and the USOC would not want to be in the position of having built their whole publicity package around Michelle, only to have to scramble at the last minute if Michelle withdrew.

I am still hopng for the best, but I don't think Michelle would want to compete if she is not physically able to -- nor would she want to be the center of a controversy if she skipped nationals and somehow ended up on the Olympic team anyway.

MM - Your speculation is good. It makes me worry whether she would make the 'last six to skate'. Maybe it's better she go out with a whimper.
