I decided at this moment that he had this season the best free program among the men... I think it's a very difficult music to skate to, but Shoma found the essence of the piece and the right interpretation.

Thank you so much for your awesome first-hand report. I truly felt like I was right there and could feel your wonderful enthusiasm for Shoma. He is SO exciting live! I have seen him at 3 different competitions and once just practicing at a local rink. For someone so small, he really has command of the ice and is so charismatic. He is super pleasant and has a really nice demeanor, as you were able to sense when you met him. I do think his program is the most unique of the season, and he has worked so hard to get just the right feel for it. His big hug from Coach Fluffy after his skate really warmed my heart...Thank you again for your wonderful post. So glad you are a big fan of his. I too wish he had gotten the silver, but the bronze was ok too. Nathan's tech was insane but had nothing even close to the charisma and artistry of Shoma.

Happy 19th birthday, Shoma:love: I hope this is the beginning of your greatest, most wonderful year ever.

He shares the same birthday as lots of skaters. Happy birthday to Sei (21), Tatsuya (14), Riku(15?), Liza (20), Amelie (28), Evgania (22) and Nikolai (41), too.

From today's practice(See comment with video on birthday message)
4F, 4T+3T, 3Lo+3T/ 3A+3T, 4T+2T, 3Lz+3T, 3A+1Lo+3F, 3S+3T

He really seems to feel sting of defeat without third combination. I've never imagined I could see his 3Lz+3T someday before. 3S+3T is also new to me.

I didn't understand what to click on to see this. Sounds amazing.

Thank you! :jaw: Wow - what a practice. Talk about being totally in "the zone". Looks like it was taken on mom's phone. When I saw him, she was taking videos of his spins with her phone. Now if he can just skate that way at Nationals! I am assuming 100% that he'll go to Worlds, but I wonder if he'll also go to 4CC. I guess we find that out at the end of Nationals,

Hi everyone! I'm quite late to the party but since I attended GPF last week-end I thought I could make a little post on my live experience :)

I was already a Shoma fan when I arrived in Marseille but even more now !! This kid is amazing. Let me explain.
I had the chance to seat in the third row for the Men SP (it was total luck, because my ticket was basically for the second category, in the balcony, but I met a Spaniard who had nobody by his side so I could seat in the so-called Carré Or). I didn't have a Japanese flag to cheer for Shoma and Yuzuru but fortunately there was next to me a very nice Japanese fan who didn't dare to wave her big flag alone, so we raised it together for Shoma :peace:.
During the warm up we were quite nervous because Shoma didn't look confident, and tense. But when came is SP.... It was incredible. I was just captivated by him. Even with just his opening pose, he has that presence, that charisma... When he landed the quad flip I screamed and thought 'Yes, he's going to do it!'. Well, everyone knows what happened later, but it didn't prevent me from being hypnotised by Shoma's skating. His speed, his SS, his commitment, at the end of the program I was like "What ? already finished ? No please, go on!" We were all very worried by his ankle but fortunately it wasn't serious.
On Friday, I went to the Men practice (I needed to take my dose of men skating lol). Talking about Shoma only, it was a heartbreaking moment. He was reapeating his quads, falling, making a new round, jumping, falling.... I was starting to be very concerned by his condition, but I heard he couldn't get enough sleep because of the jet lag, then we thanked god Men Free was only on Saturday. At this practice, "only" the 3A was going well, but it was enough to relieve us a bit, at least about his ankle.
On saturday, Shoma's practice was waaaaaaay better. he did land some very good quads, not everything was on point, but still a huge step up from the past days.
The Men FP was such a HUGE moment. The arena was ready to explode. Plus there was that introduction of the skaters before the warm up, with that epic music announcing the Battle of the Titans
And then the unbelievable happened. Shoma skated sincerely the BEST and the most beautiful program of the night. I decided at this moment that he had this season the best free program among the Men. It's truly a masterpiece. Every movement is in perfect accordance with the music. The musicality of the choreo is something that impressed me a lot. I think it's a very difficult music to skate to, but Shoma found the essence of the piece and the right interpretation. I don't think he put a foot wrong during his performance (except for the first 4T ofc). He had that commanding presence that said "Hey did you think I was lost ? I'm here, you haven't seen yet what I can do". I was on my feet before the last spin ended. I was so moved by the performance that I couldn't stop clapping my hands and screaming (I think I just shouted "I love you" when he bowed at us :slink:). And everyone seemed to agree with me. During the 3 days, the audience was really warm to him.
Finally, I was so happy that he got to medal, even if he could have had silver in my opinion.

Last of my "Shoma experience" is after the competition, I was with my friends, we waited the skaters after press conference behind the rink near the door they were leaving by (what an adventure to pass through the security men but it was worth it lol). We waited them with two japanese journalist who took us an interview while waiting like "What did you think about Shoma and Yuzuru, why do you love them, what are you going to say if you see them..." it was so funny and dear, I think all Japan saw me fangirling in front of a camera ? :dance2: Finally, Shoma came out. I couldn't resist and asked him to take a picture. He was adorable, very kind to the fans waiting there, and I offered him some chocolates from my city, he seemed very pleased, so I think it finished to make my day :o:

This concludes my experience at GPFinal! Sorry for the looong post and for my approximate English!

What a great time you had overdosing on Shoma. Thank you for your report.

Can you imagine the cheer if he skates like this at Worlds? I think it won't be long until he cracks 300. And if he shows up like this at Nationals it won't be an easy win for Yuzuru either.

Oh my, I almost forgot Shoma's big day! There's so much going on at the moment! Happy belated birthday, Shoma-kun!!! :hb:

I bet he got many sweets today, although the best gift for him will probably be a near flawless set of skates at Nationals (which he's very much capable of!) Ganbatte, Shoma!!! :cheer:

If Shoma already has hip troubles, the 4Lo is probably the last thing he should be doing. I also wish he would have someone work with him on the proper technique for jumping a jump like that. I think I read somewhere that he said, Oh I just watched Yuzu and I know how to do it. That could very well be true, but it would be nice if he has a little guidance. Hopefully if he goes to Alex at the end of this month, they can work on it. Better yet, choose a different jump!

Maybe my memory doesn't serve me well, but didn't he say he doesn't intend to add it to his programs anytime soon and that he's just practicing it "for fun" at the moment? :scratch2: And yes, I'm worried about his health as well. :hopelessness:

Edit: nvm, he said he wants to include it back in April, but in the end apparently his landing rate wasn't yet satisfying enough to do it this season. He seems to be very determined to beat Yuzuru as soon as possible! :eeking:

At this point, Shoma is clearly Japan's #2 man - and if he just stays healthy and confident, he will definitely make it to the 2018 Olympics. I think Shoma has an good chance at a medal at both the next Worlds and Olympics (Unless Canada or the U.S. makes some HUGE mistakes, I don't think Japan will medal in the Olympic team event). But the news of hip problems has me really, really worried about Shoma.

I wish B ESP Chris hadn't said anything about Shoma and injuries. Because what exactly did he mean? Is it serious, or is it just some annoying things that bother him? I think with most skaters, there's always something going on with injuries. It's like, just make the list -- ankle, foot, knee, shoulder, back, etc.! I can definitely see him in the running for Worlds and Olympics if he can cope with injuries and nerves. Ok, now I'm going to stop obsessing about injuries. Sorry. I'm just worried about my son / grandson.:console:

I think I read somewhere they like to have the success rate up to at least 75% before they include a new element in a competition. So maybe he can do the 4Lo but not at a high enough success rate. That jump hurts my hips just looking at it.

Probably hurts Tara Lipinski's too to even say it >_>. But maybe it was worse for her because she did a 3L/3L. A solo loop maybe isn't as bad that way.

Definitely. I think that 3Lo/3Lo is a killer on the 2nd loop. Too hard and too easy to underrotate. I think they have to get such a snap/pop on the 4Lo that it's pretty tough. Well, I think it was Uncle Dai and Kenji (or maybe Takeshi) who said their bodies ache everyday, and they skated pretty much before the quad total madness. I'm going to conjure up the skating Gods for all of them I think! LOL :handw:

That's a good plan, so he doesn't end up with a more or less planned fall like some of the uncles did in the past.

At least for Dai this was definitely the case as his ACL injury in 2008 left some permanent damage (his right knee was basically a beaten up mess when he retired and during his last two seasons he pulled through severe pain :sad21:). Takeshi was a pretty natural jumper, so it might not have been as hard for him, but I'm sure he had his fair share of injuries too. (Which skater doesn't?) Kenji was an ice dancer though, so his body didn't have to take that much pounding.

A translation of the latest Shoma/Daisuke interview has been posted on Shoma's fan-blog:

And also this:

http://shoma-uno.tumblr.com/post/154660140097/fs-practice-runthrough-12172016

This kinda reinforces what I said on the previous page. His main goal is to catch up with Yuzuru's technical level as much and as soon as possible in order to be able to beat him. His self-perception has changed so drastically in such a short time-span. He is astoundingly feisty! And also pretty loco. ;) I mean, practicing by adding a 3T to all of his jumps? :eeking:
