Arriba's excitements that are full of love for Shoma always makes me smile. We all look forward to your lovely first hand reports at Skate America already.

Hey - this is serious stuff! Honest, I had my map out this morning to see how far the drive is to Skate Canada (535 miles each way - oh dear!). Or approximately one hour flying from Chicago to Toronto. Now I don't have to worry about it, although I'd like to go to Skate Canada now anyway to see Yuzu and Patrick.

Yes, I went to the museum and then drove by Glacier Ice Arena. I left the house for about 3-1/2 hours, just so I wouldn't go crazy! And this will be the fifth time I am seeing Jason skate live. Please Jason, stay healthy!!!...I hope Keiji makes Shoma wave!

Oh, finally GS Assignment comes! I kept thinking about it until I fell in sleep last night! If Shoma get entry in SA, i'm sure i'll jump with joy!

Living there seems to need a car! I once watched Patrick coming to his rink by driving a car on Japanese TV (when he was in Detroit?).

Yes, Don Juan and Don Quijote are different. I think Don Juan is by an American composer, and Don Quijote is a ballet by the Russian composer Minkus. It has some really good music. But wait, I am getting ahead of things. We haven't even seen this year's programs and I'm picking the music for next year.

Yes, there are many, many rinks here, some of them smaller ones. Hockey is very popular and helps to pay for upkeep of the rinks. I think it is very expensive to maintain the rinks. My godson used to enter figure skating competitions, and the fees they charged were crazy. It's a pretty expensive sport. Our professional hockey team (the Chicago Blackhawks) has won several championships and I think that generated a lot of interest in hockey. It's good exercise for the kids.

It depends on where you live, but in general, most people have a car. In the area where I live, public transportation is pretty much non-existent. When I see Japan's high-speed trains, I get so jealous! I'm pretty sure Detroit (where Patrick was) would require a car.

I was mentioning in Post #1535 that it looked pretty dead at Glacier, except there were 2 cars there. Not sure if one of them would have been the Shoma-mobile...Hadn't seen that triple axel post.

Good idea for Shoma to stay. Pretty sure he is participating in the U.S. Classic International being held in Salt Lake City Sept. 14-17. He did last year, as did Keiji, Satoko (I think), and a few others from Team Japan. Hopefully he will take advantage of being here for Skate America and work with Coach Alex before and/or after Skate America. It would be the perfect opportunity, although by then the season will have started and Coach Alex might be pretty busy with Tomoki and his other students. Somehow, I have a feeling he would find time to work with Shoma.

Yes, and I looked back and saw Kanako was there too. This is that competition Shoma should have easily won. In fact he did win the FS, but his short program was a disastrous 52.45. Dad Keiji was there too. I would love to attend this competition but will be out of the country. It's kind of small and informal, but a lot of good skaters participate.

That sure seems like a lot of shows!!! Ha ha -- the collection of deep Vs is growing! If I remember right, he did great at Japan Open last year. That seems like it would be a fun competition.

Last night, I checked GS assign every ten minutes, but no information came up and fell asleep (AM1:00)
This morning, as soon as I got up I checked my tablet and searched the table and watched SA first and found Shoma’s name! Yeeey! how much Arriba is delighted! i went to GS and read our joyful comments.

The waiting was CRAZY wasn't it! I just said I would go out, otherwise I would sit and stare at the clock! But it was worth the wait, and I'm so excited that I don't have to end up going to Canada to see Shoma. I really felt he would get Skate Canada. I don't know why! But I still wish I could go to Skate Canada! It will be a wonderful competition.

My godson (a Christian relationship) used to do amateur competing when he was younger (he is in his 20's now). I first saw him skate when he was 4 years old. Oh my gosh, he was a little Shoma (only not nearly as good as Shoma). I just found a photo of him the other day in his costume that also had a little cowboy hat. He was SO cute. As he grew up, it was so much fun to watch figure skating with him on TV, because he would say stuff like "That wasn't a good camel spin because ___" and then he would tell me all the criteria for a good c. spin! He mastered a lot of the jumps like the toe loop, flip, salchow, but if I remember right, he stopped taking lessons when he was around 14. Everything was very expensive, but it was good discipline and a good learning experience for him.

You would love Chicago Blackhawk games. They are wild and a lot of fun! I have cousins who are hockey fanatics and have had full-season tickets for as long as I can remember.

I found some You Tubes with Don Quixote (or Quijote in Spanish) programs. I can definitely see this music for Shoma (ok - I'm rushing it a little bit!) Officially this is music from the Don Quixote Pas De Deux. Pas de Deux is just fancy words for an excuse to do a lot of dancing towards the end of a ballet.

My goodness skating has changed in 40 years! I think in '76, John Curry does 1 triple CORRECTION--he does at least 3 triples), and in '01 Sarah Hughes does 7 triples! (darn - the Sarah Hughes link wouldn't work). In my mind, I can see some of Shoma's wonderful footwork, a nice choreographic sequence. a section where the audience would clap, and (of course) a wonderful deep V. Of course some people will think this is a war horse -- oh well! hwell:

In 40 years? My memory goes back only to mid-80s, and even then men were doing multiple triples, and in 1988 Kurt Browning landed the first quad (at Worlds). Those dozen years between 1976 and 1988 must have been one hell of an escalation tech game!

It definitely was fun being able to ask questions of a figure skater while watching. And sometimes my godson would jump up and show me how to do stuff. I remember him talking about how you get speed going into your spins. So fascinating.

By 40 years, I was referring to the link I had posted of the Don Quixote program of John Curry, rest in peace, at the '76 Olympics. I went back and looked though, and I think he did a whopping 3 triples. Love that guy. He was coached by the great Carlo Fassi.

The less driving one does in a foreign country, the better. I suppose where you're driving makes a difference too. Wouldn't recommend it around here.
