I would so love Shoma to break out from his normal way of work and maybe get at least one comp programme next year from another choreographer. I'd like to seem him try some different movement styles. Maybe the SP at least to experiment a little?

I wondered if this year they would give credit to Stephane as co-choreographer. It seemed that although Mihoko sensei provided the framework for the choreography, Stephane was the one who did a lot of the refinement of the movements. I thought it was a joint effort - but I could be wrong. I wonder how much experimenting they're going to want to do during an Olympic year, although I think Shoma is up to any challenge. I would vote for Massimo Scali, Shae Lynne Bourne, Jeffrey Buttle - oh my gosh the list is endless! Speaking of Jeffrey, he was sitting 2 rows in front of me at Sk Canada!

Oh, my! Did you say hello?

No I didn't -- in fact I wouldn't have even recognized him except that a Canadian lady sitting next to me said "Oh look, there's Jeffrey!" He looked totally different! He was wearing glasses, a nice suit jacket, and they all look so much thinner in real life than on TV or You Tube! A bunch of kids asked for his autograph at one point. He was there checking out his choreography, I'm sure. At least one (maybe 2 or 3?) people that night were skating to his choreography.

Nov.6 night collection
From around 2:50, his interview right after Free.
He feels “kuyashii” and, “if i can turn the feeling of“kuyashisa (noun of “kuyashii”) to the motivation of my growth, this feeling will turn out not to be meaningless. I want to prove it.”

And it is so nice.

It is about mainly SP. It includes some scean ive never seen.
Around 3:40 and 6:40, priceless KC after SP and his photo with children. And interview (He is so happy with the unexpected high score, at the same time, hope is sure there are more room of higher score or performance, so he wants to work harder.)
Further, from around 8:30, about his watching of Dai’s dance performance. Dai says is expression is what rises up from inside yourself and it cant be taught, so you must broaden your mind.

So jelous of you! I find Jeff is an amazing dancer! When i saw him live at the show, i was surprised very much. he skated with up tempo music, and he caught every piece of music... Yes, every piece. And his movement is precise.

Oh, i found Mai Mihara’s sp is promissing at Skate America and looked up the coreographer. That was Massimo. I want to see his work for shoma.

Hopefully he will rest up a bit and continue to take his one day a week of rest. Maybe we need to remind him of Uncle Dai's words "Have the courage to rest."

YES! I am glad that Shoma's GP events are done this early and he can have some time to rest and work on things before the GP final. If Shoma at least medals in the GPF and finishes a close second to Hanyu at Nationals, the men's event at Worlds could be the most - by far - event.

This Worlds is going to be a barn burner -- for the men's in particular. I think the ladies may end up being a wild one too. Talk about exciting!

That KC will go down as one of the best ones, I'm sure! So funny! He looks so cute with the kids. Maybe they are bigger than him! :) I wonder what they do with all the stuffed animals and gifts! Looks to me like they gave him a giraffe and maybe a hippo?!...So glad he had an opportunity to compete in Russia. It's another good experience for him.

The other bonus here is getting to see Wakaba's gorgeous new Scheherazade costume. Oh my gosh! So beautiful! And it is a little overwhelming up close, but I'm sure on the ice it's awesome.

Jeff is a wonderful skater, and I think he is becoming more and more popular as a choreographer. I saw a You Tube of him choreographing something for Dai, and it was great to see them putting the program together!...I do think Massimo Scali could be good for Shoma. I like the things he has done for Taka M. and Dad Keiji. Next year's programs will be SO important because of the Olympics...Mai had a great SP at Sk Am.

They really love his kawaii and chibi-form. Honestly, if I were Shoma it would annoy me that every time there is some report about me, they show kids videos of myself....

Sorry for being MIA but i had to go to Bucharest to buy tickets for Kings On Ice as it's not possible to buy them online. Please find below the translation of Tarasova and Grishins' comments regarding Shomas' FP.

Thank you for all the links and posts with news and photos! :thank:

During the 2nd group warm-up:
Tarasova: Oh here’s my favorite Kiddo (she’s calling him малышатина aka kid/kiddo) just did a 4flip just like kids going to school.
Grishin: He went to school did the flip, came home and did his homework. (Implying that he did it without thought, with ease.)

Just after Kolyada skated:
Grishin: I just want to add some sugar to these bitter moments (as Kolyada didn’t skate perfectly), at the moment Shoma Uno, the leader of the competition, is running on ice among the girls who are picking up the toys and he blends in well as he has almost the same height. The girls are about 5, 6 years old LOL.
Tarasova: Yes, yes and his costume has Swarovski crystals as well as the girls’ costumes.
(They said it with such joy. I love how they speak about Shoma)
Grishin: Shoma already has one 1st place this year and he’s skating his FS under Buenos Aires Hora Cero by A. Piazzolla.
Tarasova: Let’s not talk and just enjoy it.

During program:
Tarasova: Here’s the 4 Flip, the only one in the world. The kiddo who does the 4 Flip.
4T from the steps, he didn’t want to disappoint anyone.
|
Tarasova: From the spread eagle into 3.5A
Grishin: And it’s in the second part. He’s got all the combos in the second part of the program, all 3 of them.
Tarasova: Of course he does.
|
Tarasova: The third quad 4T
Grishin: Yes, as well in the second part but not very clean, it’s a bit difficult.
He’s gonna be without one combo.
Tarasova: Axel loop and Flip (Tarasova said four, zero, three but I guess she made a mistake as it was 3T 1Lo 3F). He didn’t make any additional moves he’s got power in his hands!
Tarasova: And of course a Genius boy. As little as he is (meaning the age and the height) so much power he’s got inside. No additional moves, not with hand nor head, everything sparingly as a man. (She said скупо which means in this case something like restrained, meaning the manly restrain.)
Thank you very much for this great joy you gave us, simply tremendous joy. Of course he’s gonna jump the 4T in the second half later on. He gave all his strength in order to gain speed for his last axel, because without speed the axel (3.5A) can’t happen.
Grishin: The axel was executed on the 5th minute and with the loop and 3F. Mihoko Higuchi came here from Japan. Actually, from North America.
Tarasova: Yes they are just flying, they’re passing by their home country not even landing.
Grishin: Haha yes they’re not even flying in into the country of the rising sun. Well we can say for sure that Shoma will be participating in the GPF
Tarasova: These kind of people cannot miss GPF they have to be there (meaning the GPF will be not GPF without him).
Grishin: Even judging by the math he cannot be outside the top 6 in the world in this season. And here he’s without 2 combos and with a ‘dirty’ 4T. Can you imagine what will be when he’s gonna skate it clean. When he’s gonna land the 4T adding another jump to it and doing the 3rd combo.
Tarasova: He’s just gonna do it. One can say just by looking at him that he’s gonna do it without a doubt. Where does he get this strength, where’s the will coming from, the will to be the first, the best, to take risks and advance, learn new stuff take the path that no one is taking?
Grishin: Rush and buy the tickets to Marseille. 186.48 is not something surprising for the Japanese skaters. But the 285.07 is his seasons best, meaning the total for 2 programs.
Tarasova: And all this is with a fall.
Grishin: And without 2 combos.

Thank you so much for the translation. It's great to be able to get the perspective of Russian commentators -- especially those with the reputation and experience of Tarasova and Grishin. Very interesting to hear that Tarasova seems to really love Shoma. The big complaints about him seem to be not enough transitions, too much 2-footed skating, and too many crossovers. Yet I never hear any of the commentators talk about that...Mostly we have had commentary from Japan links here (obviously -- makes sense! :) ) and a few other broadcasters in English and Spanish...Oh you're going to Kings on Ice! I'm so jealous! I was in Bucharest in April and really enjoyed it. Didn't get to see any skating though! Have fun!

The german commenters adore Shoma, Arriba627. I've never heard them criticize the things about the transitions and 2 footed skating, quite the opposite. So I'm always confused when I read this here on goldenskate. On the other hand I must admit that I'm not a skater myself and have no idea about the finer details of the sport. I'm happy when I can name a jump. Most of the time I don't even see UR. So who knows.

Shoma is well liked for his skating not just by his so called "uber" fans!

Thank you nagini for the translation! :)

In a figure skating article I was reading, it said if you have good figure skating skills, you don't need to pack a program full of transitions. So then that REALLY confused me! I guess there are different schools of thought about what makes a program good. I saw in the Program Component Scores for the FS at Rostelecom that Javi scored 9.39 versus Shoma who scored 8.82, I went back and watched both of them again, paying attention to the transitions. I could see that Javi definitely had more transitions, but I guess I didn't see how that added to Javi's program. I guess it added to the difficulty but -- who knows?! It's all so subjective it can make you crazy!:hpull: Glad to know the German commentators like Shoma. I'm always so happy when fans (in general - not just commentators) appreciate skaters from many different countries. I have favorites from all over the world, even though Shoma is my #1 favorite.

Interesting info about transitions. :drama: http://figureskating.about.com/od/figureskatingtechnique/a/turns.htm

I always love these videos of him when he was so young. Even at such a young age, you can see his Nagoya posture!
Of course, it is not “every time”. It's sometimes, to introduce him to general people other than skating fans. Further, i dont know about the other countries, but it’s not unusual to see an athlete’s younger days on TV. Further, if an athlete is a promising kid, local TV finds him and keep filming as he grows up. Shoma is brought up in the region where figure skating is popular, so his hometown must have watched over him.

This is newsclip (provably local TV)on Nov7. They asked people about his attraction (1. Looks, 2. Gap between on and off ice, 3. Technique..). I find their arrangement of the video is well done. They collect nice scenes.

so what are everyone's thoughts about Shosho wanting to inclue 4lo in the free?? Are you all ready for a loco loco heart attack? I mean we have seen him jumping it in practice so he can do it but I guess it is not really consistant and also it's gonna make it a 4 quads program... :slink: I mean on one side that's kinda awesome and I am admirative, on the other side, he would have even less chances to pull it off clean that now

Great question. I heard this and right away thought "Oh no! Say it isn't so!" :palmf: 3 quads and a 3 jump combo are hard enough already. I always thought they like to have a jump at 75% success rate before they put it into a program. I wonder if his rate is that high already with the Loop? Too much, too soon. Hope his poor hips and knees can take it. I guess I'm a fan of clean programs. Wonder what his coaches think. Good luck Shoma kun!
