I am hoping for a wonderful FS for Shoma. Not really a big fan of 2-quad SPs. I'd rather see a great 3-3 with + GOE than a second quad, but that's not happening anytime soon, I'm sure. Come on Shoma, you can do it! :hap85: Also very happy for Mura that he gets some much-deserved attention.

You know Chris? Tell him to talk more about Shoma's thighs. We at GS enjoyed that tremendously.

I don't know Chris but hope to be able to meet him. I will probably have a hard time not thinking about his famous thigh comments if I get to talk to him!

ETA: Does Shoma really wear glasses? Don't think I've ever seen him with glasses before. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPktRHZFy6w&t=50s

I wonder if it was the bad landing of the 4F threw him off, since he could not tag the 3T and then he needed to put the 3T to the 4T and so he fell.

Well it might as well happen here than at an international competition.

Sometimes, I just don't understand why people criticise Shoma's style of skating so much :sad14:. All those talks about his crossovers, and two-foot skating.. I'm not a professional in the sport, just a passionate fan, so I don't have any arguments to stand up against that. I would really appreciate any explanations to why it's wrong/unpleasing to the eyes, but personally, after all those years watching Shoma, I've never seen a professional hate on his skating. People like Tarasova and Kurt Browning loves his skating/transition/edges, and that's the same for me. A few skaters, like Yuzu, is phenomenal. But somehow, I can't watch their performances over & over again, while I can just watch Shoma's 100+ times and it'll always bring me so much emotions (might just be me)! I know it's objective, but it's so sad to listen to people talk about Shoma on other forums sometimes. Almost everything he does is criticised :slink:

I observe normally, when the technical difficulty is raised, a skater ought to downplay a bit his TR. Only a few skaters in the world can do both, such as Yuzuru whose choreo includes more steps instead of crossovers. But even the Great Yuzuru hasn't been able to pull off a clean program with high TES but less crossovers this season. Why demand a younger skater to do that? And don't forget that the number of crossovers and two foot skating will only hurt the transition score which is just part of PCS. Shoma has very nice skating skills, performance, and interpretation, which explains his decent PCS.

And regarding his technical side, he has beautiful spins. He got GOE+3 for his last spin at GPF, right? Then his jumps, his landing of 3A and 4T used to be much weaker than now. If we look at his landing of 1-2 year ago, we can notice how much improvement he has made. He has flaws of course, but the most important thing is that he is improving fast. In fact, he is improving so fast that scares some fans of the others out there who are more than ready to attack him whenever he competes and whatever he does. And that I think is a good sign meaning he is rising and fans notice that. I never doubt his skating style as I personally enjoy watching him and all skating professionals (commentators, judges, media, etc) adore him too.

According to the practice report, his condition today doesnt seem to be so good. He has trouble with 4t and 4f.

go, shoma!

Hope he will do a "Marseille" with worrying practice and superb FS :sad14:
At least, FS taught me this: everything can happen when you are well-prepared or not.... Go Shoma!!!

Short interview after SP

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGKomZ3P8tg

I hope Uncle Dai gave him some good advice!

Shoma says that 4F was OK if he would have got 4F alone, but he tried to put 3T, and stumbled.
Further, after the fail of 4F, he couldn’t switch his mind well and missed what he should have been careful about 4T.
Daisuke says he’d troubled with 4T since that morning, and shoma replied he did the same mistake as his practice.

there must have been some interaction between them behind the camera.:)

On the contrary, Mura's condition seems so good today and got the jumps at the practice. I was so happy with Mura's performance yesterday. Hope he can get the best today.
I dont mind any result would come as for shoma. He is still young and any experience would be a lesson for him!

So with Japanese Nationals, in general which way is it -- are the scores inflated or are they low? I think I've seen both comments. I tend to think of Nationals in most countries as having inflated scores. Pretty sure that's the way it is in the U.S.

As for score inflation, i dont see any inflation this year after seeing some other nationals this year and considering coming Canada Nationals or so.

In Japanese Nationals, the scores are not so inflated compared to that of other countries, or even harsher than the world standards sometimes, tbh.
I 100% agree. I saw Russian, Italian, Spanish and French Nats this year and compared to them, Japanese Nats is very very fair, conservative and even a bit stingy, I think. At best you got 2-3 points inflation? Last year is the same. I don't think Yuzuru would get 102 pts with 47+PCS in international competition with a 4S fall but 99 touching almost 100 is definitely a score he will get internationally for the same performance. So their score is not so inflated and far-off compared to international standard, in my opinion.

It's time to bow out of the Competition thread as soon as the bashing begins!

So let's all enjoy our happy place here and celebrate, Shoma, Japanese National Champion 2016!

SHOMA WON :yahoo:
I know it wasn't the perfect victory he wanted, but Yuzu's first and Dai's first wasn't great also, so no reason to be sad there! He did amazing, considering that he was at the gpf barely 2 weeks ago, and is probably so tired & worn out already. Shoma's crazy practices with all the combinations paid off in the end! What amazing saves he did towards his last jumping passes there! :rofl2:
and
MURA MURA MURA I'm so sad about Mura :( But I'm so happy for Keiji's silver, so I really don't know what to think over this year's Nats.

Congratulations to Shoma! Obviously I haven't seen the FS yet (can't believe Fuji TV didn't broadcast the last group live :noshake:) but he must have been better than the others and a win is a win even if the whole competition was underwhelming.

So the Worlds team will probably be Yuzuru, Shoma and Dad Keiji? I'd be happy with that but I'm very sad for Mura.

Oh, yes… Im sad for Mura…
But im trying to think like that. I remember how yuzu seemed happy with him at NHK cup this year. Further, Keiji is a nice dad for shoma! :) This years Worlds is so stressful one for the Olympics spots. The presence of Keiji will ease the top two. Further, Keiji has some room to improve!

Yes, I love Keiji and thrilled that he got the silver and will possibly make the Worlds team. His presence will be greatly appreciated by me if he's chosen! :yes2:
But it's devastating to watch Mura deliver a fantastic SP then bomb the FS. Maybe his ankle is still not healed...

That Cup is bigger than Shoma himself...haha...oh, I nearly cried with him...and Higuchi and Yamada hugs. Such a strong bond between these three. I honestly cannot see him going elsewhere.

Shoma! I cried with him. Daisuke’s voice right after the performance also shook a little with so much impression? he said again and again he felt his strong will nevr to fall.
He did all the combo for the first time this season’s FS? 2lz2T, and 3S3T! he said he’d practiced so hard for 3T combo, which didn’t betray him…

Congratulations Shoma! I just finished watching his FS. His jump landings were off today but I thought
everything else was good and he deserved that Gold Medal. After his final spin the tears came as a release
of all the pressure he has endured. I am so proud and happy for him for winning his National Title! :yahoo::dance:

Good for Keiji for winning the Silver, nice skate from him. I don't know what happened with Mura he looked lethargic. I wonder
if his ankle was bothering him, nevertheless Congrats to him for winning the Bronze!

eta: Also such a treat to hear Dai's voice commentating:love:
