I just KNEW this was exactly what my grandson / Lord of the Purple Pants would do! The usual pre-important-competition total disappearance, hiding :cool14:, total news blackout thing. I was already disciplining myself and saying I wouldn't post anything in his thread during that time, since I already make way too many posts in here! :laugh2:

My take on it - there's no way he could sneak back into Japan without the "eagle eyes" Japanese media knowing about it. Also although he doesn't compete until the 30th for the men's SP, the first men's practice is on the 27th, and I would assume that the skaters have to start checking in on the 25th? 26th? The Printemps gala ended on the 12th. So he's in Europe somewhere. In Dec. when I met Gracie Gold's mom, I spoke to her about this very thing -- training in another location. She said it's super simple to do because the skater's management company sets everything up.

In trying to combat my No Shoma Newsitis, I have been watching all his You Tubes. An added bonus was seeing that Coach Fluffy wore the fluffy coat at the 2015 Japanese Nationals! :yay: Guess I'd never seen this compilation one of all his scores. Hope he'll add more happy faces to the compilation video soon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSTjIS18p5k

Please stay healthy Shoma! :luv17:

Think about it. It makes no sense to flight back to Asia and then back to Europe within one week. He can't even finish a spin at his rink between the 2 flights.

Yeah, but where exactly is he? Is he training somewhere? Hiding? Sewing a new LOCO costume? The tension is killing me!!! PIANTAO!

Maybe Switzerland...visiting Stephane to perfect his tango... no, wait, that's been done already... it was just my hope for him, lol!

Probably the only sure thing is that they know how to be very secretive. He was in the Chicago area for almost a week before Sk America and I don't think anyone knew. Grrrr! 4everchan if you have him sequestered somewhere in Canada, we'll never 4give you for keeping us in suspense!

Well the usual suspects seem to not know where he is and their alibis seem believable;) I am sure he will surface soon.

He sure gets around! He must have a lot of frequent flier miles! Seems a little crazy to me. That will still give him a good week or so to get adjusted. Good for him--and don't forget to pack the purple pants and the loco costume! :luv17:

ETA -- He sure gets around = He sure travels a lot.
(Did we lose something in the translation here?)

Wouldn't have surprised me at all if he were in Europe tho. The thing here with Alex is he never tells the skaters at the rink who is coming. One day they walk in and Gracie is there, Shoma, Max Aaron, the Knierims. You just never know! Guess it makes sense tho and protects their privacy. So in that sense, he could easily hide. This is probably nothing to the elite skaters tho; they've been flying all over like this since they're really young. That he could escape the Japanese media barrage, THAT surprises me. Or maybe they've been preoccupied with the Junior Worlds?

Whatever the case, mucha suerte Shoma-kun!

hello All in Mr. Piantao camp :ghug:

looking at Shoma lately, I'm a bit torn between admiration, respect, being doubtful and in fear...

From one side - I'm fully aware that he has to follow the movement and go with the flow if he wants to stay in medal contention, hence quads to be added, all those alterations. I salute his figther's spirit, being so fierce, poised competitor, constantly striving perfection and ideal balance, at the same staying this humble, down to earth, conscious about his imperfections and work to be done. He sure has to have a 'quick turnaround' and pace himself immensely, but from another side...I'm just panicked that this is too much:hopelessness:, I just can't help it looking at all those close competitions, the way he pushes himself not only physically, but mentally too (as I have no doubt that with competition on that level comes huge pressure, not only from outside, but foremost from himself). Having those kind of thoughts, I try to shake them quickly and remember myself of his best performances this season, his reactions on scores after them, joy from coach Higuchi and I tell myself that this is his life, where he belongs to, with all those highs and lows, experienced with all skaters.

I trust him and his team that they all will put the best work they can to make Shoma shine in Helsinki ('Shining Shoma' sound cool! Or 'Shoma to shine')), lots of rest, good health and focus!!!

Shoma is young ;) i think he can handle a tight schedule... remember young Liza the year she won everything... all big events and all series B events LOL

I think going to smaller events is good for him. I don't think he had much pressure for Coupe du printemps. He went there to solidify his layout and feel for it. He is young and needs more experience competing his programs.

On top of that, some people, like myself, do not experience much jet lag... so if he is that kind of guy, traveling isn't as tiring as it is for people like Ashley Wagner who doesn't do 4CC because it tires her too much for instance.

What I find very good in this year for Shoma is that it seems like he is playing the game the right way. To be in contention for the O games, you need to be in the eyes of the judges, as a contender before the games. A podium at worlds certainly helps... but being everywhere can do that too. Especially since there have been great performances at times... in other words, judges can do... oh yea... that short was clean, imagine combining it with that long and now we have a real contender ;)

We fans often do that (xeyra did a full analysis of several skaters along those lines) so I think Shoma is doing the right thing now. Perhaps next year, he will be more cautious and be less out there, but this year is the right time to do it.

However, if he were to compete this week, I would say he is crazy ;) there's a limit ;)

Shoma is very prone to jet-lag and has admitted in several interviews that he has been affected by it in past competitions. Hence why he's already on his way to Helsinki. :)

Agree with the rest. Everyone in the men's division is "crazy" these days and Shoma is so highly ambitious that he has no choice but to conform to the trend, if he wants to achieve his goals. And it's best to upgrade his tech as soon as possible (and get used to executing it in competition) as for most skaters learning new high difficulty elements gets tougher with age.

On the other hand I can understand (and share) NoNameFace's concerns. High ambition is commendable, but also comes with a lot of risk for these boys' health. Thankfully I am under the impression that Shoma's drive has been reigned in at least a little bit lately, because he has refrained from bringing the 4S while it is not yet stable enough. (Mind you, he might do it at Worlds. I hope not. :slink:)

I trust him and his team that they all will put the best work they can to make Shoma shine in Helsinki ('Shining Shoma' sound cool! Or 'Shoma to shine')), lots of rest, good health and focus!!!

:agree: with this, every word of it!
