I really cannot See him as a dad! He is just a little guy...

He's going to be 20 this year, though. He's an adult. I didn't want to say that Shoma should start making family plans at 19. I just wanted to say that being a father/being married/having a girlfriend doesn't mean he has to stop skating. He's not an idol who is forbidden to have a private (love)life.

Wow! Good job! :dance2: :dance3: :hap85: Still hoping we'll get the CBC version. I would also translate the Spanish version (with Paloma & Susana) if I can find it. I just love re-living his special moments. Such a well-deserved silver.

Every rewatch I focus on different things. His arm movements... they are absolutely amazing. It's so fluid. There seems to be no stiff bone in Shoma's body, he just flies!

Just settle down Grandpa! Our grandson will be fine. Shoma will marry some sweet Japanese girl (in 6 to 10 years), and all will be fine with the world. Next thing you know, there will be more little Shomitas like my avatar.

MaiKatze I agree that the new styling made him look older. I thought it looked good -- the blue shirt for the SP, and the slicked back hair for the FS is really more true tango hair. I have a weakness for the "poofy" hair though, I think. :slink:

Just curious shutterwhimsy, how old was Shoma when you first saw him skate? Did you see him in ice shows? competitions?

Grandpa interview is here, and he was saying that 1. He hopes Shoma can grow up to 160cm. Even though there's just that 1cm difference, that could help him express better in performances.
2.He thought Shoma has come to the age feeling curious about the girls, but if there's the possibility Shoma might choose dating instead of training he definitely hopes that won't happen.

I think everyone in this thread would know that NO.2 is not going to happen lol.
The only thing Shoma care about in this world (currently) is skating and games...Don't worry grandpa.

Thanks! Still I haven’t written my report (please await for a while!) I wanted share this interview since grandpa is just charming! Haha, he is said that he looks like shoma, but his younger self at the age of shoma was more adorable (handsome). Lol
And it’s funny that he insists that shoma should be careful of women, since he finds getting into love affair would get on his way with his skating life. I think it’s not so abnormal thought in Japan, especially for older generation.
Further, he can see how shoma would perform at the moment he get to the start position and stops. In the case that he cannot feel his energy from inside him, he falls. But on the other, he says to shoma that he should fall until Olympics, since through repeating failures skaters will get solid artistry which makes them express their emotions.

He is an artist over 90, but still keeps working hard for the point where he cannot reach. You know, the world of art doesn’t have the point which is perfect. He sometimes revise his painting after watching Shoma’s performances. He says through his skate he confirms or polishes his eye for the beauty. His mind is so young and he’s so humble although he’s got enough fame so far.

I was so moved by his attitude towards life and being surrounded by such a grandpa, further, his circumstances, like his aunt who makes handmade works for stuff have a great influence on him. Shoma’s attitude, generous, positive, smile, humble, walks at his own pace, and atmosphere, what can I say, kind of classy, refined (his elegance on the ice is outstanding, I strongly felt so this time.) are partly made by those surroundings.

How wonderful to have such a loving, warm and creative family. It's exactly the thing that makes one strive, I guess. That support. It also means pressure, because I'm sure he doesn't want to disappoint, but to know you're loved either way is such a treasure for him. And Grandpa is such a tease. When he was Shoma's age World War 2 was raging over Japan. We must be thankful to live in more peaceful times these days.

Since there have been people interested in the Original German Version in the past, I transcribed some stuff. I'm too lazy to translate right now. Let's just say, everyone adores Shoma!

Sigi Heinrich, Originalkommentar, Schaulaufen.

You have to love a Grandpa who is proud of his grandson. They are full of wisdom, but teasing too. Imagine what he thinks when he hears Grandpa's opinions!!!

Can't wait to see him in 2 weeks...

Wahnsinnspunktzahl.

S: Den muss man einfach mögen.

H: Ja.

S: Das ist so. Su...Super!

Sigi gets lost in his sickness story at the end, but we're used to that by now.

synesthesia translated the LP earlier in this thread. There is another version of the LP in a highlights rerun, tell me if you're interested. It's just Sigi, though.

I can't find adequate words to describe how I felt watching Shoma's fs at Worlds. For me, it was sheer brilliance, performance wise, so alive, vibrant, intense, and unlike any other figure skating performance I've ever seen. Ever. (And I only watched on NBCSN, I can only imagine what it was like watching live, lol.). I honesty can't think of another skater (except maybe Dai) who could pull off skating to that kind of eccentric music as well as he does. I think it might become an iconic piece for him. What a talent.

Agreed. Judges would also agree with you; like us all they see quality and beauty in his skating that they can't deny, otherwise they didn't give him such higher PCS; 40+ for SP/90+ for FS constantly, he's been competiting only 2 seasons on the senior circuit so far. It's just amaging and fascinating how Shoma and Boyang have improved technically and moreover artistically since they moved up the the senior. The fact definitely affect World champions in a different way : to push Patrick to include a 4S and landed it, that was a beauty wasn't it? :luv17: to fire up Yuzuru's comeptitive fire and skated an absolutely perfect free , to pressure Javi out and made some costly mistakes sadly. However, not going into the Oly season as the '3-peat' world champion is sort of good for Javi I think.

I have been a skating fan for decades now and there were so many skaters and their skatings/programs I did enjoy, love and felt truly blessed by them from time to time. However, there weren't every one of them who took me caught by/drawn into their skating.
Daisuke, for instance, definately is the one for me. When I think of his skating and try to describe it, I'd say words like magnetic, addictive, intoxicated or irresistible. Once I start watching his skating, regardless live or thru TV, I just can't take my eyes off his blades and body movements. Among retired, Michelle Kwan is another skater for me, and currently competing are Shoma and Guillaume Cizeron.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eqgI6-DUTc Priceless moments for me is at 4:25 when Shoma hit 3A-1L-3F Simon and Chris (aren't they?) burst into laughing! and at 7:20 Shoma and Mihoko sensei together bowed to the camera in KnC so adorable as usual. :)

I was visiting friends in japan around 2009/10(?) and we went to an ice show. I'm getting old so I don't remember the exact details -- I wish I'd taken pictures or something now :( . I was a big fan of Dai, but Satoko and Shoma were there and I instantly knew they would be special and I've been a fan ever since. Looks like I was right about them being special talents.

This is fascinating! I already was thinking what an "artsy" family he has. And in the past he thoughtfully gave his aunt's homemade treasures as Christmas gifts to people in ice shows and to his fellow skaters when he came to train in Chicago. I would imagine that is mom's idea more than his, but still, it's a very thoughtful thing to do.

My 91 year old uncle (who just passed away) was a paratrooper and was in Japan at the end of the war. We were looking at some photos he took. He was stationed in Sendai, and the destruction was horrible. Thank goodness we're all friends now! :ghug: :thank:

We are twins deedee! :) I feel the same way!

Thank you MaiKatze for the transcriptions of the German videos. Good stuff!

I promised to do the Shoma Dutch ones, I forgot the Gala, so here it is.

We start with Shoma Uno. What a year he’s had! For the first time in his life Japanese champion, got the bronze at the 4CC, and at Worlds a place higher even, second after the SP, and really the only one who could stay in proximity of his countryman Yuzuru Hanyu.
Shoma Uno, will he be the main challenger (rival?) of Yuzuru Hanyu? He has it all, multiple quad jumps, is able to perform a program in a magnificent way, in short, behind Hanyu, he appears to be the best of the new “generation” if we compare him to Boyang Jin, Nathan Chen who are of course also on their way, which makes the next season unbelievably exciting, when we get to see if maybe we get to see even more quads (not sure if he means more or different quads), that’s almost impossible, and of course there’s much more to figure skating than jumps. He can do it both, he showed that in Helsinki, in the SP as well as the FS, only missed out on the World title by a few points.

Uhm, it's a bit of a jumbled mess in Dutch, I think he tried to say that at *this* point in time, he's better than Jin and Chen, but we'll have to see how they develop over the course of next season.

Finally, the CBC version of at least part of Worlds. Here is the final flight FS. Shoma kun is at around 47:00, I think. Always enjoy Kurt Browning's comments.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3dvYXUwXAU
A few of their comments after the Loco program made me realize how much I'm going to miss it! Last June, I never imagined I would be saying that! :luv17:

Carol Lane: I’m a huge fan of this program. I liked it at the beginning of the year, and it has grown so much over the season. This to me is style and substance combined perfectly.
Andi Petrillo: He’s not a big guy, but his presence was felt from the basement to the rafters. I don’t think he’ll be finishing 7th this year!

*********************

Oh no, don't think I posted this already. My buddy Enrique CoMa is back with his "introduction" of the final flight of skaters for the SP. Gotta just love this guy and his enthusiasm. He makes me laugh! I really liked the upbeat music and the introductions they gave to all the skaters. I think from this, you really get the feel for how "crazy" the crowd was! He calls Shoma "El Piantao de Nagoya".
