This is the first year where I kind of pay attention to figure skating in the off-season, and I've got a question to all those veterans. In the Ice-Shows in Japan, like PIW, is it normal that the skaters talk to all the fans? It seems like they are giving presents and fans can engage with them and ask questions and take pictures and all that. How long does that take? And does everyone in attendance get a chance to get so close to their favourite, and do all the skaters stay and receive the love? Thanks for any answer! Cheers!

Like already answered above, PIW is special for having interaction time afterwards. ふれあい time it's called in Japanese basically translates to "interaction" time. It's the only one I know that traditionally has this though, so if you are planning to attend other ones keep your expectation low.

Apart from being the only Japanese show giving fans the opportunity to interact with the skaters, it's also the only one, that allows taking pictures and filming (of course only during "greeting time", not the actual show.) Because the skaters are usually drowned in gifts and flowers, there are "helpers" standing by, collecting the presents in baskets. As far as I could see all skaters make the circuit and are celebrated after the show! I think since his retirement Tatsuki is the only one, who refuses to accept gifts or engage with the fans.

With the participation of the biggest stars it can get pretty hectic though from what I've seen on youtube and according to reports whenever Mao, Dai or Yuzu appear in the show, with people pushing and shoving from behind to get closer, just to catch a glimpse, take a picture or to shake hands. (It looks kinda scary to someone, who's prone to claustrophobia. :drama:) I'm not entirely sure about this, but aren't front row tickets distributed through some sort of lottery? I think this is definitely the case for some (most?) Japanese skating shows, not sure if PIW is one of them. I guess it's pretty difficult to obtain tickets in general due to the sport's and its stars' huge popularity.

Apart from Yuzu, who is always surrounded by heavy security, I'd say it's much easier and chill to meet the Japanese skaters anywhere but in Japan, because that level of figure skating craze (unfortunately!) doesn't exist anywhere else in the world. (Maybe only Russia comes close?)

Back to our leprechaun-prince:

Someone translated several tweets of Sho's banter with fans at PIW. As always he's amazingly nonchalant and blunt. Gotta love him!

Btw where does your endearing "nose fetish" come from, Arriba? I've never met anyone obsessed with "big" noses before! (I wish I did, because mine isn't exactly small either.)

That's so interesting! Thank you Arriba, firal and synesthesia for your answers! :thank:

NRW Trophy 2012 was the closest to a FS mega-star I've been so far. I don't remember if Yuna had security with her, but I don't think so. It got quite hectic whenever she appeared in the venue. Savchenko/Szolkovy, the only other 'big' stars at that event were practically ignored and kept on training at the sidelines without interferrence. When Yuna arrived all attention was on her, even poor girl who was on the ice was forgotten.

I cannot imagine Yuzuru doing this kind of Fan Interaction at this point in his career. Even if he appears at a small senior B or something. And it is scary.

I find it amazing that Shoma is bantering and engaging with his fans like this, when he seems so shy. But he's really snarky, and fun, you're right you gotta love him, synesthesia. Good for him, and well, who doesn't want presents? Like the headphones from skullcandy, haha. I just don't know how the fans can hold back when they see him. I think everyone who sees Shoma feels like they want to ruffle his hair. (Even most other skaters can't seem to hold back with him) It's rude, but probably a real urge!

^^^PIW would definitely be my first choice because of the Meet & Greet. Have to admit I was alarmed last year when I saw how close everyone was to him, and I did worry about his safety. Everyone seems to be pretty civil though. He came right up to our section after Sk Amer and was smiling and taking photos with people. I guess the fact that he had just won the gold medal helped him smile! He did seem very at ease though, in spite of the language barrier.

Any guess for what size long sleeved tshirt he would wear? I'd like to have a shirt custom printed with something in Italian (from Nessun Dorma). His upper body is SO small, unlike the rest of him! (ahem). I hate to do it though if it won't fit. I guess his mother really does buy his clothes!!!

Some of the fun stuff from last year's shows. A little boy asked How can I be like you? He had to think about that one for a minute and responded "Work hard and never give up."...One of the ladies was talking to him about hair wax and saying how you should put a pea-size amount of it on your hair to style it. He said he didn't know that and puts a big lump of it on his hair. I think that's what used to give it that kinda greasy look!...After the season was over, he had a tooth pulled. Someone asked him to pose with his hand on the side of his face...I also love the tradition of sending floral arrangements to the skaters. At the show where he was supposed to debut Lavender, he had received a huge amount of all lavender colored arrangements and bouquets. (Then he didn't do the debut -- oops!)

I must have missed the headphones from skull candy?...It must be a full-time job going through all the gifts. I always wonder what happens to all the stuffed animals and if any of them do like Jason Brown and donate to places like Ronald McD House. At SA someone gave Jason a stuffed animal that was bigger than him!

At least we have all these ice shows to provide entertainment during the summer. And I LOVE to see that Shoma can still move around pretty freely. If he ever beats someone, my advice is to get a bodyguard!

:scratch3: :handw: The nose fetish? Hmm. Not sure. It's just so cute, and Cyrano de Bergerac tells me people with big noses have kind souls. Heck, his nose is almost as big as my German nose!

^@Arriba you will spoil your grandson! :) I would suggest a size medium (12-14) in Boys would probably
fit Shoma as I don't think he is shopping in the men's dept. yet. My nephew is 16 and he is somewhat built like Shoma
and that is the size I get him but sometimes I get a large (14-16) in Boys because my nephew likes to wear them loose.

I am sure Shoma will love whatever you send him.

^^Thx! I never would have thought about the Boy's Dept. and was thinking everything would be way too big and WAY too long in men's sizes. Probably Large is good cos I think they wear another practice shirt underneath and take the top one off as they warm up. Think I'm gonna look into it and try to give it to him while he's here.

Thank you for the link, so much fun to read!

I wonder what SKAM attendance will be this year as well because it's the day after Thanksgiving. I have a ticket (and it's Row A at that) but it'll really depend on who is showing up to determine if I'll go. C'moooon June!

Danibellerika, I feel the same. Can't wait for June! Last year I was walking on air for hours after the announcements! This year--who knows? What anxious fun! I have a good ticket and a room reservation (since the day after SC :) ). I do think attendance will be very good since this is the last GP event before the GPF, at a beautiful former Olympic site, in an Olympic year. And I'm told that everything in Lake Placid is open for Thanksgiving, since it's the start of their season. But if none of my favorites will be there, I'm not sure I will go--the expense, of course, and Lake Placid is sort of difficult to get to unless you're driving.

Some more fan chats:

Q: Would you change choreo for Turandot 2.0?
Shoma: Yes, we will change it all. (Good news! So we will have a brand new FS)

Q: Would you consider dying your hair?
S: No, I don't care my hair much... I would fall asleep while my stylist fix my hair.
Q: I want to see you in golden hair~
S: ...I don't think people around me would allow that.

Q: Shoma, do you eat vegetables lately?
S: No, I don't eat them these days.

Q: What size do you wear?
S: Size...I don't know. I wear what I have.

Q: Are you able to sleep during your flight?
S: Not quite.

Q: How long do you sleep every day?
S: On average, 8-12 hours.

Q: What music do you listen to before competition?
S: Your name. That is the only song I know (laugh)

Q: What manga would you recommend?
S: I don't watch it recently. But I basically like every manga

Q: Would you go to THE ICE?
S: I don't know.

Q: When would you go to America?
S: I don't know.

Q: Would you go to the Hyoen show? (The one Daisuke, Akiko, Shizuka, Nobu, Kanako will go)
S: What is that?

He's a bit clueless, isn't he? Do your best at studying, Shoma, or you will fail.....*LOL* :p

I'm getting jealous just reading this. If the Winter Prince is there, I may just break down and go. :scratch3:

i winter prince and chiddy charming are both going... omy.... i may walk to lake placid from the great north

:laugh2: If it's a repeat of last year, I recommend a snowmobile, a Siberian-husky pulled sled, or cross-country skis. I'm assuming SC is always a given for Patrick, but I wonder how he feels about SA, especially given that it's the last event before the GPF in Japan. I know they don't have much (if any) choice.

well patrick is low on the food chain of choosing ;) but he won't be at SA because Nathan will be. So don't worry... i won't need a sled ;) Nathan vs Shoma promises to be a great fight though ;) *** reconsiders the huskies

:laugh2: I misread Keiji as Kenji, so thought who is the Kenji, is he Shoma's real dad or Kenji Miyamoto, the choreographer?

Though Keiji is only 3 years older than Shoma. :)

I think Keiji and Shoma have always had a special relationship. It seems like Keiji was always in charge of taking care of Shoma when he was younger. Don't know how or why it developed, but it seems like they have a really nice relationship, even if they do fall asleep at banquets. https://pic.twitter.com/tmemSfYGou
