I think Keiji and Shoma have always had a special relationship. It seems like Keiji was always in charge of taking care of Shoma when he was younger. Don't know how or why it developed, but it seems like they have a really nice relationship, even if they do fall asleep at banquets. https://pic.twitter.com/tmemSfYGou

How adorable they are. They don't seem to train together, but it is so good to know that Shoma has built a great friendship with Keiji. :)

Well I guess Shoma has arrived he has his own Flutz Thread. I really don't think it is appropriate but hey
it is what it is lately at GS.

Heck why not start several different threads pick a skater and talk about
said skaters weaknesses and what we don't like about that weakness and how
that weakness is bringing shade on the sport and is a bad example to other
skater, blah, blah, blah.

Last time I checked every skater has weaknesses and has room for
improvement.

Pretty tiresome, isn't it -- especially when trolls get involved. As if every skater doesn't have stuff they need to improve! I couldn't stop laughing when I read that someone wrote, "Doesn't his team know that he flutzes?" What, they think the team never reads the protocols?! And they don't need to read the protocols to know the state of his skating. Come on. I remember seeing that photo of Shoma and Sota lying on the floor studying their protocols -- that was from YEARS ago!

I can't even imagine dwelling on skaters who don't interest me or that I don't like! I have a lot of skaters that just don't particularly appeal to me -- so what?! But some people are only happy when they're unhappy. I enjoy focusing on the things of the sport that are fun for me. And I love that at every competition, there are so many little personal victories (usually) for everyone -- whether it's a new season's best, skating a better SP, reaching out more to the audience, etc. I am really looking forward to watching the Winter Prince's growth. It will be SO fun! :yay:

Post of the week! :agree:

well...it depends what folks are looking for, and for some, picking up imperfections of certain skaters and blowing them up to ridiculous proportions in separate threads are like national sport and life goals in one. It's funny and sad at the same time, and both feelings relate for me towards those people involved, not skaters as they probably know perfectly clear about their areas of improvement. But lately, it seems like there are some self-proclaimed pros there who got themselves a right to bash and criticize in pretty nasty manner those imperfect things, of course labelling it as 'discussion' or 'analysis'. Funny that those 'jewels' are delivered towards particular skaters, with other being totally untouchable and foot-perfect, just harmed by bad judges sometimes. Funny stuff, indeed:palmf:

the things that irks me the most is dragging certain skater in other skater's FF there just for bashing/belittling/abusing purposes. To prop up this FF skater in question, even if he/she does not need that kind of 'adoration'. And god forbid you speaking up about it/having different opinion about 'skater X vs skater Y' relation/even being neutral about this bashing thing celebrated - then you're getting ridiculed, laughed at and everything mocks you about which comments you liked under 'thumbs up' sections (because, you know, they are watching you). Of course, everything finished with phrase 'we agree to disagree then', then what's about that kind of stuff?

Shoma being Shoma will train, practice, train, practice, learn new programs, get new costumes, being cute, shy, humble and hard working, then work, train hard, compete, win, lose, improve and so on...and I'll watch that and pay attention to that, because it's worthy watching and paying attention, not stuff described above made up by people mostly desperate for attention or desperate for others' approval.

Hi everyone! I'm new to the forum, although I've been lurking for some weeks now. I've always liked watching figure skating but was only really aware of it peripherally (watched the ladies' free skate at Sochi and ice dance, I liked yuna Kim and Charlie white and Meryl Davies, also saw Patrick Chan skate before and I was impressed), but I recently started following the men's event. I heard about Yuzuru Hanyu and his tendency to break records and change the sport so I was initially watching him, but of course that led me to watch the other top men as well. That's how I got fascinated by Shoma. I love the passion and artistry in his skating. Right now, whenever I hear "This Town" and "See you again", I always remember Shoma's exhibition. Cannot be helped!

These comments about cheated jumps and the like actually really annoy me: Figure skating may be a sport, but it is more importantly an art.... People don't start watching figure skating to look for quadruple jumps. Although we admire the great jumps, in figure skating we look for the skaters whose art speaks to us, via their movement and their programs. That's how it's different from other sports. At least that's how I feel about it. If I wanted to see only great jumps, I'll go watch gymnastics.

Therefore, as with any art, different individuals will have varying and even multiple preferences. No one has the right to dictate who my favorite should be. I like Shoma more than any other skater among the men right now, and that's no one's business but mine. I prefer his art, and that's that. Whether I'm ignorant or educated regarding the technicalities of figure skating is irrelevant to my choices.

I agree with Arriba, there are skaters I don't like, but so what? I wouldn't bother bashing them online. That's so silly. I'm a fan of yuzuru too.

....

Anyway, I hope I get to see Shoma perform live someday! I'm closest to Japan, but it's highly unlikely we can get tickets there (those rinks get packed during these competitions!!!). I'm looking forward to the announcement on the grand prix assignments, hopefully I can fit in some travel plans. Barring that, maybe some ice shows (how many are there that's worth going to and not in jam-packed stadiums in Japan?)? Any suggestions?

Thanks for the general positivity in this thread!! It's fun and uplifting. I always enjoy reading the posts here.

Hey everyone! I've also been lurking for uh quite a while (I went through all 270 pages of this fan fest during my finals week *nervous laughter*).

I started watching FS during 4CC 2017, with the purpose of watching Yuzu, but I was immediately drawn to Shoma's Loco nevermind the 3A splats hahaha. It's such a daring, unique programme <333

Re: the analysis/discourse about Shoma's skating online, I completely agree that it has veered across the line of mere discourse and now it's just annoying. Especially when some fans try to shove multiple slow-motion gifs of prerotations in my face. Like, I get it... you're trying to tell me that my fave is not as good as your fave. What they don't know is that I live on spite and salt and that my stanning only gets stronger the more criticism he gets.

I really admire Shoma's nerves of steel: being able to watch Yuzu's overwhelming FS backstage at Worlds, say that it was perfect, and still go out there to skate wonderfully as if those scores didn't affect him at all. Another thing I love is his extraordinary commitment to the characters he's portraying in his programmes: off-ice Shoma and on-ice Shoma are so vastly different and how does he manage to command such stage presence?? WOW.

Really looking forward to the ice shows. Especially Fantasy on Ice... both Yuzu and Shoma will perform... and probably embarrass each other... so blessed... :')

Away from GoldenSkate for a few days, and I'm not exactly surprised about what was posted in the Edge. Most of you know my stance on the topic, we communicated about it, and you know the reasons why I don't go into the topic in the fanfest again.

I'm glad that there are new Shoma fans! Welcome, welcome Latremu and Scarymouche (quite the feat to read all of this thread, wow) What unites us here is the love of Shoma and that means respecting other skaters performances. Shoma doesn't exist in a vaccuum, he competes with a lot of different skaters, who do their best in the sport they love so much. Some we like more, others we like less, but we don't discuss them here. I bet most of us even would disagree on our 'favourites' outside of Shoma. But we all try to get along and cheer for the man this fanfest is dedicated to. Please join the love!

Welcome Latremu and Scarymouche! :) No need to lurk we are a harmless (most of the time) group here of figure skating fans!

We adore Shoma but also adore other skaters as well!

And I will second MaiKatze sentiments "we all try to get along and cheer for the man this fanfest is dedicated to"!

guys here is a small compilation of Shoma with all his gifts at the shows he has done so far lol

really I don't get how he can be so disliked by some people lol. I get all tastes are in the wild or wtv is the sentence in English but still

for that 3flutz thread it was actually quite nice so I could block pretty much everyone in it. My personal favourite message was "I can't really count rotations but Shoma clearly does 3.25 flip". ok then.

^^^I just LOVE when they post pictures of the gifts. Can't imagine what he does with all this stuff! Pretty sure it was at last year's Prince Ice World where some of his training mates were there, and he hollered up to them "Hey, didn't you guys bring me any gifts?!"...Thx for posting those. Hope there are more eventually.

Likewise on the 3.25 flutz comment. Someone has to carry on the tradition though! Honestly. And they're overdue on posting the transitions chart for the umpteenth time. I'm sure we'll see it soon.

yeah i wonder what he does with the gifts too.
Like does he actually like or care about flowers? Can they even keep that many flowers? Does he split them between his mom, coach etc.
Does he like plushies? What does he do with them? Does he wear the clothes/jewelry he gets? Does he collect the fan art? I am really really curious.

The bouquets are a bit of a pain because you have to put them in water, etc. Ok, I'm laughing just thinking about Shoma taking his flowers home and messing with them. Hopefully the stuffed animals go to hospitals or some charity. I'd like to think he at least looks at the clothes and jewelry! My guess is that he uses some of them...Waaaa :sad4: I wonder if he'll even see the tie I sent him!

The flowers probably get thrown in the trash - honestly, I'm always surprised that they allow flowers because of the hazards with debris being left on the ice.

The Ronald McDonald House/Children's Hospitals seem to be a popular charity among skaters - that would be a great place for the stuffed animals.

Yes, Ronald McD. is such a great charity and has done so much good. I love that Jason works with them...I think it was at the last Japanese Nationals that after the men's medal ceremony, we saw backstage that the men put their flowers in a refrigerator, probably to be used for the next group of medalists. Don't know how it is in Japan, but flowers are pretty expensive in the U. S., so that makes sense to me.

I was wondering if Shoma (and others) received any big floral arrangements (delivered before the show). That's such a cool tradition. I know Johnny W was really happy about all the flowers he received last year when he did shows. Didn't see any Prince Ice World flower photos this year though.

Thank you for the warm welcome! Thanks also for the pictures of Shoma and the gifts, he sure receives a lot of them! I also can't imagine Shoma putting the multiple bouquets in water and arranging them. Doesn't sound like something he'd do. He probably sorts through the clothes and other things and picks out what he likes, so he may see the tie you sent him. 😁

Has anyone here seen on Twitter the translation of Shoma's interview with the Nagoya mayor? The mayor says, "I heard quints are physically possible." (Possibly suggesting that he do them to increase his chances of winning??) Shoma's like, "They're physically possible. I don't plan on doing them." So happy he's not talking about attempting quints (or quad axels)! Phew!

Here is a photo of Shoma on tumblr receiving Sports Achievement Award from the Mayor of Nagoya. I believe GPF will be held in Nagoya this year. If you click on "News" on the left you will see Shoma's comments translated to English. Congrats to Shoma for receiving this honor!

^Yep, GPF is in Nagoya. I hope Shoma can make it and wow the home crowd with two great skates. Might be a very good push for the Olympics, depending on what happens!

I made a translation of this Month's Figure Skating TV by Fuji, including comments on and by Shoma.
Take a look. http://www.goldenskate.com/forum/sh...16-17-Season&p=1731274&viewfull=1#post1731274
Part 2, the other Skaters are discussed. Part 3 coming up.
C1. About Uno-senshu, honestly, in a good way, he had no nervousness at all in training. Last year he pushed so hard, this year I think he decided not to push (himself) at all. Even after failing a jump, he smiled and went back to Higuchi-sensei-such scene’s stood out to me. I think he has learned how to get through a competition, how to face it and I think this is big.
Y. That he’s come to this state of mind, in the pre-Olympic Season is a big thing.
C1. Yes, a big thing.

Part 3 Final part...I really like the commentary on all the skaters on this show. The main commentator, who was there at the worlds competition can barely contain himself talking about everyone.

Interview with Yuzu and Shoma a day after the competition , how did they spend their time between the SP and the LP?
Hanyu-YH
Uno-SU
YH: I was not especially conscious of Shoma, I thought, ‘ Everyone is amazing (I wanna put ‘Amazeballs’ in here because his word was ‘sugeee’-a slang) Particularly impressive to me was that Jason, without a quad, was able to get those points, I was impressed at that, and compared to that what am I? To jump two quads and then, this (referring to his results) There was regret, and despondency and a lot of things.
Especially the first day (after the SP) I nearly went into practice full of regret and anger towards myself.
SU: After the SP I usually feel like ‘I did it’ but this time, I wasn’t thinking about anything at all, I felt like I finished the SP practice. I felt like I want to have fun, and in the Free, I thought, I want to have fun, and I was able to skate that way.
C1. I saw you watching the skaters on TV, while you were putting on your skates and even when warming up you were glancing at the skaters, I wondered if it’s going to be alright…
SU: Doesn’t one want to see the good athletes? I think I want to see. Before competition most say they don’t, but I want to see, as a member of the audience. …So I do…I always watch before competing.
YH: I get the feeling he’s always watching (the skaters). I don’t…but I did before, at one point my coach told me, ‘don’t watch’ so I haven’t since then. But I watch the scores. I see the combined scores and think, if it’s this much, if I jump x amount well, I’m good!
SU: Yes, I sometimes think that too.
YH: It motivates me.
SU: When I saw you skate I thought , “Alright, I gotta do my thing”
YH: Like it says in the (news) article, ‘the confidence of knowing you can’t win’. I thought that was really interesting! (quoting what Shoma said in a different interview)
(Both chuckling the whole time.)
SU: I thought ‘I can’t win, so I’ll just do my thing,.
(The rest of the interview has been translated elsewhere. How Hanyu thinks Shoma is very wise (like a game character) and has amazing mental strength and stability, Shoma considers Hanyu to be ‘King’, Hanyu says that it’s interesting because in his mind, it has always been Plushenko who is King… But the ending is pretty funny)
YH: (to Shoma) I ain’t gonna lose. (Spoken in slang)
SU: I’ll do my best.

Y. What an interesting interview, I think next year, these two will pull the skating world.
C1. It was all so interesting, I watched it all again, and it occurred to me, Hanyu-senshu mentioned Jason Brown, skating in a different era, he could have been World Champion. But since he’s born in this era, his placements don’t go that far. When you think about it, the scope of skating’s evolution is so broad, and in the forefront of that is Hanyu-senshu, and because of that Uno-senshu is also able to evolve. When you watch the interview you can see how their relation is to each other.
But anothing thing, about Jason Brown, and also Misha Ge, at the same time, because it is the era of quads, the uniqueness of skaters who do just triples shines even brighter. In this era, this is also so interesting on its own.
Y. Yes, there are many ways to look at it. The battle of the quad specialists, plus, the presentation, and the skaters who compete with that.
C1. Speaking of the past, Johnny Weir, Emmanuel Sandhu, were very unique, so this brought to mind the last performances of that kind of skater.
And one thing I think was the key in the Long program, was in the morning, the practice was not in the main rink but the sub-rink, this is pretty rare, usually practice is done on the main rink and then competition on the main rink, but there was a difference in the conditions of the main rink and the subrink. I think it was difficult to know which one to adjust to. And in this the Japanese athletes were able to do better than the others. What I mean is, their experience, came into play, and they know now how to compete during the Olympics, including Uno-Senshu, which is wonderful, the best outcome for Japan I think.
And Tanaka Keiji also competed, he said he was a little regretful, but Tanaka Keiji has the strength of a good program, so he can polish that and next year compete for the spot for the Olympics.
Y. And a Quad…
C1. Yes.

Whether I'm ignorant or educated regarding the technicalities of figure skating is irrelevant to my choices.

The diversity is what makes figure skating so unique and exciting! It's not an assembly line where everyone fits a certain mold/needs to converge to a certain standard. Personally I'm also not a fan of the distinction into artistically vs. technically inclined skaters as there are so many shades in between. Overall well-roundedness obviously helps to reach the top, but in my view it's rather impossible to be the best at everything, especially in terms of artistry, which can't be measured on a scale (even if the judging system implies it). Every skater obviously has their individual strengths and aspects they still can improve on. Not every FS fan will be attracted by the same qualities either. Some prefer the athletic, others the asthetic aspects. And then of course everyone has their own concept of "appealing artistry". The preferences of the fanbase are just as diverse as the athletes' approaches to the sport!

Meanwhile Shoma will continue to stay on his own path in pursuit of nearing his version of an ideal skater. His way of compartmentalizing his goals should help him in this journey. He doesn't seem to be striving for some holy grail (as in wanting to win a certain title/amount of titles, be the first to achieve sth.), but to be adjusting his objectives along the way with each conquered milestone. A good approach to make sure to stay motivated for a long time to come. I'm having a good laugh when I read that people think his ultimate goal is to catch up with/beat (a) certain rival(s) when Shoma has clearly stated he's eyeing a long career, ultimately wanting to become a skater who leaves lasting impressions in people's hearts. Imo it's a more rewarding goal to have than merely aiming at accolades and titles. Aspiring to become a better artist will always give him many sources to draw inspiration from. There's no ultimate benchmark, so I'm not concerned his drive will be exhausted soon. While Shoma knows he needs to work on his technical weaknesses to be competitive with the top dogs and does this constantly to his best ability, he also seems to to be aware that there's much more to skating than that.

Pretty sure, Shoma received just as many! I've read once that most skaters give the majority away to relatives, friends, staff etc. while keeping the prettiest ones for themselves. I'm wondering how they make up their minds, which ones to keep - they're all so gorgeous! :luv17:

I've read it and won't get into that discussion as it's already being dissected ad nauseam elsewhere. :coffee:
