The vocal is definitely José Carreras in his prime - as this clip demonstrates, he was a fabulous tenor until he got leukemia (thankfully he recovered, but vocally he was never quite the same):

Thx for the clarification on that. When Shoma was here in June, I'm pretty sure he had a different vocal music he was playing, cos I remember thinking :gaah: Carreras is much better! And what a difference from when I first saw him skate to Turandot in Milwaukee at Sk Am 2015. He has grown so much since then, both artistically and physically. Don't know if you went to that competition. Whenever we have any opera questions, I have to remember to direct them to you!

Yes, I was at Skate America in Milwaukee - and I was actually comparing this clip to what I remember of his program there - he was good then but he's better now!

I wasn't that thrilled that Shoma decided to do Turandot again. But then I thought that it would be great to see how much he have improved. And he certainly has! :agree: Turandot 1.0 was very good and it wasn't immature at all. But like so many have already said Turandot 2.0 shows more mature Shoma. I like the atmosphere he creates. I'm starting to think that this was a really smart move. The judges were already impressed with the 1.0. When they see a clear difference with 2.0 maybe the GOE and PCS will go up?! The jogging was great because we got to see him smile :)

 :slink: LOL What has happened to our Shomita and his pants?
Yes, we all need to concentrate on this season, I know. Shoma in the first place.

He needs to be careful or he'll get points deductions because of an inappropriate costume!
Also, you were right that FS will be hard to to watch. Very ambitious layout! I've got all the confidence that Shoma will deliver. I'm worried that a lot of us will pass out from nerves :dbana:

OneFlutzAway, welcome!

Okay this is from 2017. Has Shoma gotten a lot taller?

This is a good question! When he appeared on a July 4 TV program, they asked him if he is short for a skater and he said his height was still 159 cm. (around 5'2"?). When he is dressed all in one color, he definitely appears taller. When my friend and I saw him at Glacier in June, the first thing she said was "Wait, he's gotten bigger since we saw him at Christmas!" I don't know -- could be all that beef he eats! :) As far as I could see in person, he is my height. I am 5'2".

Interesting. According to Wikipedia, Satoko is 4'11", Mirai is 5'3", and Mao is 5'4". Maybe it's just the perspective and maybe Satoko is leaning over more than the others, but he looks nearly as tall as Mao in this picture!

JSF recently updated their site with information on their skaters for the new season and that included heights. Shoma's remained at 1.59m. It's possible he's grown, if not in height, then in presence, which gives the illusion of being taller than one really is?

Thanks for the advice on the Worlds tickets, Arriba!

Much as I would like to believe so, as pointed out by xeyra, he apparently remains at 159 cm (5'2.6"). I think he just looks taller because of the angle of the camera (tilted slightly down) plus he's further from the camera, at the back. It creates the illusion of his being a lot taller than Satoko. Of course, his increased confidence may have something to do with that as well. ;)

Maybe rather than actually growing taller, he has gained the skill to appear taller. Maybe his skates have 3cm insoles!

Ah - so he's actually over 5'2" - that makes sense then!

arriba, i love your new avatar... it's like little prince meets shoma :)

Thank you! That's actually the photo off the cover of my copy of Le Petit Prince (only I have El Principito). He was blond so I had to color his hair black. And the green seems to be a theme with Shomita!
