I also believe that the layout is too demanding to skate consistently clean over 6 months of competitions. But I think there is a strategy behind it. I'm honestly not very surprised that it didn't work out at Nationals, and in the end it doesn't matter. It might've been a good thing that Yuzuru wasn't there or else they both might've wasted their energies at a competition that just doesn't matter for them at this point. I think his team had a plan but then Shoma felt exhausted at Skate Canada because of the beginnings of the flu. The flu destroyed his whole strategy of what he was trying to do. That's why he's going to 4CC imho. He just isn't completely there yet and he doesn't need to be. For some reason I'm not worried at all.

Congrats Shomita on his second Nationals title!! Obviously the 2A+4T didn't work out and there is some clumsy moment (like the +1Lo+1F), but at least the 4Loop is back and the 3A was an absolute beauty. However, I am starting to worry about the 4F in the free, it seems to have grown to be a problem. Perhaps it is better to move it to the first half, like after the Loop? Or change it with the Salchow?

Btw it's 25 December already here so Merry Christmas to all of you!!:hap85:

(I expect he WILL change it, maybe a salchowif it continues to be a problem!)

Aww...don't be too disappointed Shoma. Even though he says he wants to practice a lot, I think one month without any competition will do him good. The last two months must've been incredibly taxing. That's why I am in two minds about 4CC. I'm ecstatic that we get to see him again so soon and that he perhaps can take that title, on the other hand, I hate the thought that he would exhaust himself so shortly before the Olympics. I believe, though, that Shoma himself says he definitely wants to compete and that 4CC had been planned from the start. I'm very impressed and hope Shoma can channel his frustration with the last few competitions into something better. He says he doesn't want to run away, but if there is one thing I would like for him to do, it would be to jump his Quads, if he must jump all 5 of them, earlier in the program. The second half becomes a problem otherwise.

Every time the Prince steps on the ice, I try to remember to appreciate what he is doing and how difficult these things are that he is doing -- even if at times he doesn't meet my expectations. The thought that his career can be over in an instant is very scary, so I want to enjoy every second of what he is doing! I thought after his FS he might possibly get another spanking from Coach Yamada, but she went a little easier on him today!

A long time ago, I said I want Shoma to play his game, not someone else's game. I STILL feel that way. Sho, don't play Nathan's 5-quad game, play your own game. Heck, even Nathan isn't doing all that great with his game! This tech is too hard! That being said, I'm wondering why someone who could do 4Ts in his sleep is now struggling with that. Well, back to the drawing board. But please come up with something you can stay with and start getting some muscle memory going! On the other hand, his step and choreo sequences have been wonderful, and his spins most of the time have been beautiful.

I remember a while back, Jonathan Beier from The Skating Lesson (I know, many don't like that show!) was kidding around about Sho and said "This guy is incredible. He comes out and skates every skate as if it is his last skate of his life!" They were kidding but at the same time were admiring his fire and commitment to his programs. During this Oly season, I'd rather that he didn't burn himself out like that (by always going full out) but yet still find a way to give it his all.

Anyway, congratulations on a second gold medal. Onward and upward, on to 4CC, maybe on to Chicago training (:sad4:), and on to the Olys. Can't wait to see more joy and sunshine from the Prince! :points:

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year :dance2: :hb:  :dance3: to all the wonderful people who post and lurk here. I have met some of the nicest people here and at skating competitions! Thank you :thank: for your friendship. It is a blessing! :ghug:

Merry Christmas, everyone! It's a wonderful day! I wasn't able to watch the men's FS live because of the festivities, but when I did finally see it, it really doesn't look as bad as all that. The program has grown, and his spins and steps are all level 4 now (at least I believe so, when I was watching the TES box, especially for his steps). He had really beautiful spins and wasn't traveling. He needs to work on his jumps and figure out his final layout though, so I hope he returns to Chicago ASAP. His disadvantage is that he has no jump coach in Japan, so he only practices jumps on his own and mostly has to correct himself. Can Coach Alex Ouriashev move to Japan? Hehe. His stamina also really suffered after that flu, he was so out of breath after the program (considering the downgraded layout) as compared to his more difficult layout in Worlds where he wasn't even breathing hard after 4 quads and two triple axel combinations. Things to work on.

I also got nervous after seeing that he planned a 2A-4T and had second thoughts about that. Seriously though, he wouldn't have become a top skater if he didn't challenge himself to attempt new things. He wasn't satisfied with just doing a 3A and 4T, he then attempted a 4F (2016 team challenge cup) and had the hubris to include it in competition, then did a 3A-L-3f (which I believe was unplanned in the TCC Fs last year- wow, how he's progressed since!) instead of the 2A-L-3f. Then he went for the 4L (2017 4CC), and has now included the 4S (Lombardia Trophy). If he didn't have the guts to try it in competition, he wouldn't be at the level he's at now. Anyway, he usually attempts new things in the "less important or less challenging" competitions (aside from the above, attempted 4F-2t in Wtt, and the 2A-4T here). of course Nationals is important, but since he's practically guaranteed an Olympic spot and didn't have much competition, it was OK to try it.

Shomita, go to Chicago, revive your jumps (the 4T is in ICU right now, go cure it) then show us what you've got in 4CC and then the Olympics! I only hope they don't make him do the FS in the team event. I think 4CC will be his "test skates" and his final jump layout for the Olympics. Looking forward to it! Onegaishimasu, Shoma nara dekiruyo! Ganbare! (Sorry for any errors, Japanese friends!)

Where does he say that?

Since we have a lot of Shoma/Keiji moments I link this! I think it's fitting since Shoma has something of an Christmas elf in his leprechaun Outfit, too!

Shoma skated to See you again! at MOI. And some guitar solo of Joy to the World. He's precious!

Congrats to Shoma for winning the national title! For the second time! :clapper: Shoma is going to the OLYMPICS! :yahoo: Not that there ever was any doubt that he's going, but now that it's real I'm very happy for him! And I'm glad he has Keiji with him there since they seem to have fun together. Like this! :)

It's good that Shoma is working towards his dreams... as in not the olympics but skating naked. ;)
