Aside from being incredibly talented, Shoma is also so strong mentally. Yeah he makes mistakes, but he never allows himself to completely fall apart. Not many skaters have Shoma's fortitude and he doesnt get enough respect. Haters are going to hate, but at the end of the day it doesnt matter because the judges adore him :agree:.

Yep! those are the people that matters!

Yes I watched that episode!! Doug gave a lot of compliments to Shoma along with the healthy advice on his jumps. He said Shoma is the best skater after Patrick Chan, who is the king of skating skills. So you see, professional coaches admire and praise such quality of Shoma, this makes him undoubtedly one of the best all-around skater.

Yes! that's why i was very confused at the amount of hates for him as most of skating commentators and coaches hardly ever criticise him but I saw someone on tumblr very easily putting down 2 of Shoma's quad as UR

But this thread has kind of restore my faith

Oh, Tumblr. [emoji57] I've blocked a few people there. I'm guessing these are the ones claiming to be skating experts and wanting people to believe they're credible. [emoji12]

Over here we listen to actual professionals- the coaches and commentators who were once either skaters or coaches. [emoji1] Too much fake news nowadays, gotta choose who you believe, you know!

Yes, Shoma has some solid nerves. This Olympics attests to that. Whether the other men did well (individual SP and FS) or not (SP team event), he performed. And even when he makes mistakes during his performance, he continues to skate and interpret as he best can. [emoji4]

That's one his quality that i hoped he will keep! and his squishyness

Welcome gftn! Post often! Hope you'll enjoy your stay!

Shoma has focus, determination, and dedication at amazing level. He has this 'on/off switch' we can see when he takes the ice. He's only focused on doing his best, he treats every competition the same, that's why he doesn't think of winning silver at Olympic as an impressive feat. Don't forget he's capable of watching other competitors' performance before his own turn, that takes some level of focus and faith in yourself. He's someone who said 'no effort is ever wasted.' He only works hard and performs his best (and plays games, and eats meat).

I can never understand the existence of Shomachka's haters. What do you have against people who spend their life working hard, dedicating to something?

I don't care about UR, pre-rotation and stuff, I'm no expert, all I know is he's a good person and a mesmerizing skater.

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum although I've followed figure skating for a quite a while (Yuzu draw me in :D) then Shoma entered the stage!

I've spent a couple of days reading threads on this forum and watching Shoma's youtube videos I'm a bit surprised by how much hate Shoma is getting in nearly every threads/youtube videos of past events and especially about his OG silver medal.
I know his technique is not perfect but so does other skaters. Does anyone know why?

I mean I keep telling myself they're just hating on him because they favour other skaters but It is so bad that it actually make me kind of sad for Shoma.
I hope he's being treated differently in Japan as I also thought most of his supporters are Japanese and doesn't really go to english speaking forum as much as other skater's supporters.

Welcome to this fanfest -- the warmest and fluffiest place in the world!
I have a lot of experience in dealing with haters, running a blog dedicated to Shoma as I am, so I learned one thing about haters -- 99% of them simply do not know the rules, they're following the 'leading hater', so to speak, who bestows his/her wisdom upon them. Some of them like to seem 'objective' and count things (like, how many transitions Shoma has, how many crossovers he does, how many rotations in the air he makes, etc.), some of them just shout nonsense at your face, bashing Shoma and cheering for their favorite skaters. But the thing is, what all haters are trying to achieve is to focus entirely on Shoma's weaknesses -- which he obviously has, as any athlete in this sad imperfect world.
The only thing you can do with all this negativity (apart from completely ignoring haters) is, first, staying calm and being precise (haters like to call URs when there is no UR, bash Shoma's pre-rotations when they are within the limit, to say nothing of the fact that no pre-rotation has ever been penalized in the history of FS, as far as I know, etc.), and, second, saying something positive about Shoma, underlining his strengths, which he, alas for haters, has in plenitude: his musicality, his commitment to music (remember Kurt Browning: [Shoma is] one of the most artistic, edgy, committed to his music skaters I've ever seen', and Kurt is not a huge fan of Shoma's jumping technique, mind you), his expressiveness, his programs (which are one of the best in the men's FS right now), his stamina, his working ethic, etc etc. And, yes, even his jumps -- he's the first ever to land 4F, and he's one of the very few who jumps both 4F and 4Lo. Shoma has a lot of strengths which haters do not like to talk about.
So, my advice is: don't be confused with all this critique, it is just an indication that Shoma is a strong competitor and that he made his way to the top and is now viewed as a threat to other skaters. And, second, if you want to argue with haters: try to understand FS better, learn the rules, and eventually you will see that 95% of what haters say is just pathetic and laughable trash.

On a lighter note... Shoma's gaming and anime watching and admitting to both is paying off!

So, the makers/characters of Steinsgate, Vainglory, and the other game (can't remember) have congratulated him. I see a gaming endorsement or a cameo in an anime (not just Yuri on Ice) in the not too distant future, lol

TV show appearance: he was supposed to talk about the ladies, but the commentary was apparently just one liners then they asked him about himself again. [emoji23]

Thanks everyone for your kind words! It’s so good that we know what’s Shoma’s strength are but not denying his weakness and still love him to bits. I found that this is a healthy way of supporting someone and you are all reflecting this quality.

I have followed FS since Yuna and Yuzu so I know the rules quite a bit but of course not expert and yes some of the criticisms were pretty baseless.

Anyway, just hoping australian tv will air the gala Sunday night even though Brendan Kerry is not performing!

All these Dai & Shoma contents are so heart warming. Remember Japanese National 2013 when Shoma was so happy just to be in the same warm-up group with his hero Dai. Now look at him sitting next to Dai on TV as an Olympic silver medalist 🥈💕💕 Look how far he has come and how hard he has worked for it and I’m so proud of his achievement. Haters are gonna hate but I don’t regret one bit being a Shoma’s fan.

Welcome gftn. It's so great to have another fan in Shoma's corner! Although he has many, many more now, I'm sure! And you make a very important point about knowing a skater's strengths and weaknesses. I recently read someone saying that she couldn't like Shoma because of his jump landings. Oh, ok?! So does that mean I shouldn't like one of my favorites because he always gets Level 2 on his spins? That's crazy! Be ready for the constant jump landings, "he has no transitions", and not enough one-foot skating mantras. It's getting pretty old (and weaker) now. One of my all-time favorite posts after his 2016 Sk Amer FS was when one poster said Shoma had one transition in the second half of his program. The wonderful answer (which came from someone who is a lot more knowledgeable than I am) still stays in my mind : Either you don't understand what "transitions" means or you don't know how to count. Transitions are not only those easily visible tricks, like rising a leg as high as possible, or ina bauers, which are very nice of course, but what the feet do between elements. Judges know exactly what to look at and how difficult these steps are. Here are some of Shoma's in the second half of his program, starting with spread eagles into 3A:

In terms of his upper body movements (which are also considered a part of transitions), even the great Max Ambesi says he is in the top three in the world in how he uses the upper body. I hope his programs for next season showcase more of that amazing ability of his! Plus this year he added a lot more one-foot skating, especially in the SP.

His jumps? Hopefully he will continue to improve. It's a long process and certainly won't happen overnight. When I saw him in his Grand Prix debut at Sk Amer in 2015, he fell on the 4T in the short; and in the long program, both of his 4Ts were very scratchy (and one of them he barely hung on). He has improved so much since then. He works really hard at it, and I'm so happy that he still has room for improvement on his flip, toe, sal, and loop quads. I don't see him ever attempting to add the lutz...But that's the nitty gritty -- much more fun is the speculation on costumes and programs and all the crazy stuff from his personal life.

I hope you have fun discussing and reading everything. He is so special! Next up -- Worlds!

Arriba, you brought back Loco! I'm dead and gone. I loooove that program. Of course, can't go without watching it again now.

I know, I ended up having to watch the whole thing. That Loco program -- sheesh! It really set him apart from the others. And then I watched his Legends from Worlds 2016. Sigh! We need to get a petition going to insist that Fluffy tell us what next year's programs are! I just hope that people make announcements early this year, although I think that was maybe because it was an Olys year. I also loved that they announced the GP assignments much earlier than the previous year. That way it gives people time to plan and figure out which events they can attend.

I could spend several hours watching every single performance of Loco (well, maybe not the initial ice show version and Rostelecom cup) and still not be bored with it. Plus Ladies in Lavender from Worlds, and Legends from TCC, Turandot from GPF 2015, and then his junior programs - Beethoven in MOI, Blessed Spirits, Don Juan de Marco, Tanguera, Tzigane... I really shouldn't. Okay, I'm stopping now, before it's too late. [emoji27] Long day ahead.
