Shoma Jump Entry

Since you've watched skating live, were you there when Shoma did his 4S?
Do you know what was the problem with his 4S that he dropped it from his layout?
He has to work on his 4L landing too.

If you heard me HAW the landing is due to the jump entry. He said if you focus on the end result you do not see the cause. He says how you enter it is how you end it. I hope he gets a tech person to help daily.

well i think there was nothing really wrong with his 4S technic. The only times he did the 4S in competition, the jump was actually really good but according to Shoma it is just less consistent in practice than the other ones so that's why he took it out. I don't know why, the 3S when he was a junior seemed to be a bit of a problem sometimes too. I remember he always put it as the last jumping pass and often fell on it, but i don't know if it was a technical thing or more of a stamina/confidence issue.
I also think he took it out because the 5 quads layout was just too hard to master in the short time he had between december and OG, so he took out the quad that he was both the least confident about and that brought the least points.

The entry problem with the spinny entry as Haw says, i think it applies to his jumps in general, not specifically 4S, which is why he often overotates and has to compensate like crazy with the torqued knee and upper body. Though i think it is a competition thing? With the extra adrenaline he just quickens his entries and spins them, a bit like Satoko doesn't toe pick properly in competition. So i think it's a technic under pressure thing for Shooms.

But may be a jump specialist with him day to day could help him develop such memory with it that it become second nature. Haw seems to like the air position. He says he rockets straight vertically in the air which is awesome and seems powerful. It is the darn entry that is the problem.

Oh -- let the speculation begin! We can think about it for 2-1/2 months! I am hoping for Sk Can, and I wouldn't mind seeing him at NHK if that is something he would be interested in. The only thing I don't like about NHK is that he has a lot of fans in other countries that I think would enjoy seeing him. His Japanese fans can see him at the ice shows. I know he can't get Sk Am because Nathan will probably be there. Too bad, because that would be an easy U.S. west coast trip for him (and his Japanese fans). He has done well at the France events, and the only other place he had was Rostelecom, where he got the silver...It seems weird to be thinking about it so early, since the GP events don't begin until the end of October. I have to occupy my mind with something though!

That sounds very Shoma-esque :agree:. Not picky and can get the job done whenever and wherever. I'm a little picky though since I'll be at the GPF and hope to see him .

I have my hotel booked but am just having a hard time getting motivated on the air and tickets. Air is decent right now. And of course I am assuming 100% that he will be there! Go Sho!

Same. Hotel is booked, but no flight yet. The prices are good for me now too. I'm just not sure how long I want to be there. I got an all event ticket during the presale though so I have a good view currently. That keeps it tempting.

I am selfishly praying he ends up in France again It's the only location that isn't an incredibly expensive trek from the UK! But wherever he ends up, I'd love the chance to see him skate in person

Seems like it could be a possibility again. And France has been very lucky for him! I know I was so jealous last year because the Grenoble venue seemed smaller, and there were so many Shoma sightings and people who got to have their photo with him, meet him, etc. I considered going (probably for about 5 minutes! ) and decided I can't go everywhere! He is so amazing live though. You HAVE to make every effort to see him if he goes there.

Well I was just catching up in the GP thread and there was a mention by a couple of posters that there is a “supposed” deal between France and Japan trading skaters and it is not Shoma.

I saw that. I could understand why France would want that but don't see the same incentive for Japan. I mean they don't need P/C for NHK to sell tickets.
