Regarding the music, it is played on a spanish guitar so even if it’s not pure spanish music, people will associate it with that genre. Also, interpretation of music can be very creative and wide. Shoma or his team hasn’t actually said that it is a flamenco program but they might have used flamenco dance movement in the program as a way to interpret the music (as we can see from the clip). There’s no really right or wrong in this case, for example you can dance a ballet dance with a rock music or use hip-hop for contemporary ballet. It is an endless possibilities with music and movements.

Exactly... It is this kind of historical perception of Spanish style that I am talking about here. Being authentic is not the point. Bizet was not authentic either, nor was Mozart in his finale 'in Turkish style', nor many other European composers. Where exactly is a 'bad concept' here?

Yes, you explained it well. That was what I was also trying to say to Ireth. We are talking about 'art' here. Figure Skating is art and sport. In german it is called 'Eiskunstlaufen' literally 'Ice Art Skating'. So, if Shoma took 'Winter' for example, and put hip-hop moves in his choreography, that's a break of genres because one does not expect that. But he is free to do it - it is ART. You're not restricted to do ballet moves when you skate to Nutcracker or Swan Lake. On ice, it is almost impossible anyway. I have no idea if Loco had authentic Tango moves. Either way, like you said gftn, there is no right or wrong way in doing a program. If we say, this is not Flamenco and Shoma does Flamenco moves anyway, there is nothing wrong with it either.

Oh, Loco is a great example -- I think Shoma once said that he did not imitate any tango moves, he just wanted to express tango in his own way, show his understanding of this dance. And you know what -- I saw with my own eyes a lot of appreciative comments from Argentinian people saying how cool this program was and how it delivered that sense of tango, in its own way.

Thanks MK and Hronop! Yes Loco is a good example as it is also a lyrical interpretation rather than just genre interpretation.

36 seconds of Great Spirits!!! OMG, that outfit is TIGHT! He is getting close to the ideal costume of skating naked. [emoji6][emoji38] It looks so cool, and the crowd certainly seemed to like it, as did Shoma. (I like this tattoo shirt better- less frills, more flesh-colored shirt... HEHEHE). What line??? THERE IS NO LINE. There is no spoon...

Regarding the flamenco... we all know that music/art is inspired by different cultures, especially modern music. Modern music is rarely ever purely one style or another, but usually a mixture of styles. Just as with Shoma, there is no line. It may not be authentic Spanish music, but it's certainly inspired by such. Let's just enjoy it for what it is... when we see enough of the program, that is.

Well thank you everyone for my music lesson of the day, interesting to say the least. GO ShoFlamenco! :biggrin:

Love the snippet of GS he looks great in that costume and the crowd loves him!

Check out posts #9536 and #9540. And probably other earlier posts by Hronop (saying "Oops, I think I just crossed a line here... [slink emoji]"). Then other posts in the FS after #9540. [emoji23] I didn't realize there so many in a few days. So much has been happening!

The spoon is a reference from the movie "The Matrix". I meant it as a joke for the "There is no line." [emoji16]

I fear we're not going to see a broadcast of yesterday's show, because Yuzuru wasn't there. At least we'll probably get to see Great Spirits soon.

(FYI) For Shoma's new tattoo shirt in today's iceshow, there's a carp on it which could be associated to a Chinese folk story:
Carp(s) that are able to swim upsteam and pass through Huang He's "long men" (direct translation: dragon's door) will turn into dragon.
Nowadays it's used as an idiom meaning "by leaps and bounds"/ "advancement in life" (sorry I can only rely on online translator)

To conclude carp is a good sign and Japan also adopts the meaning from China as well (Japanese families put on carp steamer for boys during children's day)

Shoma + Sota + Kazuki moments (in words):

sota and shoma were smiling and talking to each other in the finale, kazuki was also mixed in there and the 3 of them were chattering to each other. shoma looked like he was enjoying himself (thank you god and jesus) ; u ;

英語翻訳:After the finale and at the exit, Sota and Shoma turned to face the arena and audience to bow and ended up facing each other, they said 'waa!' and laughed, it was very cute ; __ ;

Shoma's "Guresupi" totally rocks, I super love it and want to see it completely!! It looks really difficult and Shomita nails it! He's so cool!!! And thanks for helping me understand the "Guresupi" meaning, I was also soooo confused but now I'm so amused! 😂😂

And yes he looks so good with this tattoo like shirt, the line is the spoon...there's not such thing anymore!!! Shoma fans will remember this day as the day when the line completely disappeared 😈

Thanks for all the Shoma contents and the music lessons! Lets enjoy!

Love hearing reports about Kazuki-Sota-Shoma. I hope they will meet more in comps this coming season so we can see more shenanigans from these three. Also please drag Shoma out of his hotel room with you Sota and Kazuki!

That'd be my second. :laugh: Doctor of ShomaUnoWissenschaft. :laugh2:

Hi, Hronop, I bookmarked your Shoma Jump Thesis and finally had time to read through your dissertation. Just superb analysis and examples given! :thank:
May I ask what is your expertise and profession outside of figure skating? Just wow! :bow: Thanks a million for writing that stupendous article and sharing with us Shoma fans. How cool it is to introduce yourself as having a Doctorate on Shoma Uno. :cool2: :thumbsup:

Shoma skated to Time after Time and wore yellow Turandot at the finale! And now it's goodbye to new Shoma content for almost two months! :sad21:
