I saw Shooms at his first World Championship in 2016. I've been waiting a long time for this moment and couldn't be happier. He's always been the gold medalist in my heart, and today the dream became reality. Not a perfect skate today, but that's ok. We already saw the perfect skate in the short. The energy in the building was amazing. All the skaters got great applause from the crowd, but I felt that his was the loudest. I'm still finding it hard to express myself because I'm such a bundle of emotions!!!! So he has chased away the curse of his France 2019 IdF and replaced it with a gold medal triumph.

Kudos to him for keeping up his energy and training hard after the afterglow of the Olys. Thank you to Stephane for believing in him, challenging him, knowing how to help him peak, and for motivating him. To Hama-san for being a great manager. To Demi-san for taking such good care of him and providing friendship along with physical therapy. To Mr. Hachiguchi for his expertise with his skates. To Mom, Bill, and 🌳 for always being there for him. To Toro, Emma, Baron, and An for entertaining and comforting him. Bottom line, he has a great support team.

Just occurred to me that as champion, he gets to give his preferences for the Gr Prix series first, and they try to give him what he asks for. Is it too early to hope for North America?! Ok, I'm getting ahead of myself. I'm so happy. I can't wait to see what's next in his journey -- and I'm there for it! Congratulations Shomajesty! A huge group hug for you from all your fans! :ghug:
I really enjoyed reading this from someone who was there and is invested as a fan of Shoma's. It's hard to express when someone finally earns something you've wanted for them for so long.
I am also happy that Shoma is continuing and I don't think it's too early to think about where he'll be next year and planning to be there. We're fortunate that there's a possibility to see him and many others perform next year. Enjoy your last day there where I hope you see the gala program that is just the icing on the cake for a spectacular year. Thanks, Arriba and thanks Shoma. Group hug (the darn emoji icon keeps bringing me to an ad. Mad frown inserted here.) Safe travels home.

Thx. I have to do my Covid test tomorrow morning. Now the guessing begins. Will he do La Vie en Rose, MJ program, or ??? Can't wait to see.

I'm glad that Shoma is going back to Switzerland for his new programs before going back to Japan. He has shows to do but does he have to quarantine again?

LOVE the K & C video. Makes me so.happy that they share the joy of the victory together...Sho was so cute when Stepen told him the step sequence was good. He did really THROW himself into it.

Another translation from me. Can you believe German Eurosport actually showed Shoma's interview and the victory ceremony? Wahey! Well, all the translation mistakes are mine, the wrong info from the Eurosport guys is not. They called Shoma Knutschbolzen, which is a word that doesn't exist. I tried to put it in the translator, and out come 'hugger' but that's not nearly it, so I tried to go quite literally with 'smooch bolt' Oh dear! 🥰

German Eurosport, World Championship, Free Skate & Interview & Medal Ceremony

Sigi Heinrich: Shoma Uno. Kaori Sakamoto, the world champion once more. The next world championship title for Japan is certain, just the name behind it is not clear yet. The bronze medal is certain, also the second in Vincent Zhou's career.

It is a modern Bolero from Ravel, A very different one, than you're might be used to.

eh..will he?...easy... ( I didn't quite get what Sigi was saying after Shoma's 1F here)

Stéphane Lambiel and Sho....

Hendryk Schamberger: He knows it.

S: and Shoma Uno. An event, Hendrik.

H: Yes.

S: Yes, and if someone's name is already Uno, then at some point they have to be first.

H: That's the way it is.

S: Hehe, Kaori Sakamoto, a worthy World Champion. A great World Champion, even if he only measures 1.56 metres. A wonderful short program, an equally amazing free skate, also skated with a lot of courage, with a great willingness to take risks, to simply say, people, this is where the hammer hangs, I decide that here and in a very impressive way. He is the third Japanese world champion after Yuzuru Hanyu and Daisuke Takahashi. Shoma Uno.

Yes, one could also say that everything comes to those who can wait. Because this was the third, forth, fifth attempt. Sixth attempt at becoming World Champion. And I'll say it clearly once more, even a Nathan Chen would have had a hard time against this Uno today.

H: Yes definitely. So, really great program. And that's of course, the more quadruples you have, the harder it is to add value and focus, on the program, but this was really quite a big hit.

S: Yes, and if Kagiyama received 93 in program components earlier, which I think is too much, honestly, which I think is too much, then he must now receive 96, 97 in program components. Then he would have to pulverize his best performance so far, as the saying goes. That means it could well be the case that he gets over 300 points for the first time. He was third at the Olympics where he got 293 in total.

H: Yes, I think he cracks the 300, if I don't calculate completely wrong...

S: What do you mean?

H: He cracks 300, if I'm not completely wrong now.

S: Yes. That would be great. Who has actually cracked them so far? Hanyu, Chen?

H: Hanyu and Nathan Chen... I don't think anyone else.

S: Exactly. Shoma Uno the one, and Uno and Stéphane Lambiel, that is of course a kind of complete coaching breakthrough for Stéphane Lambiel.

H: A knighthood.

S: Absolutely! 202 points, for Shoma Uno. In the long program.

H: Great. Wow.

S: He already had, what does he have in the short program, he already got 109 points. In summary, 312:48. This is probably even a world record. The little man...

H: Absolutely strong.

S: ..very great. Absolutely great. Boy oh boy what a great skater he is too. And yet he's modest and nice and oh, that's just one of those guys..such a smooch bolt, great guy. Great Shoma Uno, a fantastic result. World Champion with 312,48 points. With 312.48 points, I don't have that information here right now, whether there's someone with as many points.

H: Yeah yeah, 335, Nathan Chen.

S: Yes, Nathan Chen. But wonderful.

H: Really wonderful.

S: If you can leave it, you can leave it written like this. Daniel Grass is seventh and the South Tyrolean has also fulfilled his target. Well, if you look at the results like this, the German skating union in the men's area has to stretch a lot, if it's going to be something in the next few years, because there are two Italians jumping in front, the US Americans are very strong. The Japanese, we don't have to discuss that. The French have also cheated their way forward a bit. And Shoma Uno anyway.

H: Yes, what a success, two world champions from Japan.

S: Yes. Yeah, after the two silvers so far, how does this gold medal feel? Well, I think he also dedicates his title to Stéphane Lambiel.

H: I worked a lot, but I was always second, now I've finally managed to win, his words.

S: Yes, that praises the level again, it was very high. Yes, we saw a very, very emotional program with your Bolero. He can also hold long speeches. Hendryk can speak French.

H: Well, I put four quadruples into the program, which was extremely taxing physically, and it took me over a year to get used to it, to show this program like this in a competitive setting.

Commercial Break.

S: The award ceremony of the men's competition, Vincent Zhou is already on the podium and Yuma Kagiyama is second again. He will not despair of it. But the fact is that Shoma Uno will probably be involved for a few more years. Uno is 24, Kagiyama is 18, Tomono is 23. And Vincent Zhou is also only 21.

A great world champion, definitely. Yes, in all four directions, bowing to the fans. Nathalie Pechalat will be present at the award ceremony. Yes, Maria Teresa Samaranch, the official representative of the International Skating Union. ISU. And.

H: There they are. The long-awaited plaques.

S: Yes, in Corona times you are stuck, you have to grab things yourself. I think you have to untie it a bit at the top first. And they are always absolutely wonderfully polite, the Japanese. So, Nathalie Pechalat, President of the French Skating Federation. I think it's great that such a young, former athlete has taken on such an office and also got it.

H: Yes, absolutely.

S: I mean, uh.. If you look at the constant, dusty official system in many countries, then I think it's great.

H: Refreshing, exactly. This is really a role model. That you don't have officials who have been in this position for 50 years, because they know exactly what's going on in sport, right now.

S: So, the Japanese national anthem. Are they actually allowed to move together a little without a mask. That is also nice.

Yes, the men's competition also had a certain magic, and it was mainly the Japanese who took care of that, but also Vincent Zhou and all the others. It was great competition here in Montpellier, and once again big praise to the crowd here in the hall, who created a festive mood with their applause, and the applause was not only for the French participants, but for everyone who took part here and that was it now really worthy of a World Championship. And you can already look forward to the Olympic Games in Paris 2024, which we will of course broadcast on Eurosport. That's a goal that we have in mind and if the audience was so great here, then the games will be great. You could almost say Hendryk, it's a shame that figure skating, like it used to be, is no longer at the Olympic Games in summer.

H: Yes, absolutely, well. Paris, I wouldn't mind - although, I mean Milan/Cortina, you can also imagine that it will be nice.

S: Yes. Yes, the beaming maestro in the middle. Shoma Uno, the new world figure skating champion. Yes, the Tour of Catalunya continues with the sixth stage, so our motto is get out of the hall and into the fresh air. In just under two hours we continue with the decision in ice dancing. And with that we would like to thank you very much for watching, that's it from us from Hendryk Schamberger and Sigi Heinrich. Take care meanwhile and stay with us.

Original

Sigi Heinrich: Shoma Uno. hehe.

H: Ja definitiv. Also, auch wirklich tolles Programm.

S: Was meinst du?

H: Ja, absolut, also.

S: Ja.

I remember watching Shoma for the first time at his first senior Grand Prix competition in 2015. I hadn't followed figure skating that closely yet, and had difficulties of differentiating the skaters level of quality, telling jumps apart etc. But there was really something special with this skater, something that drawn me into his skating. And he has been one of my absolute favourite skaters ever since. Now, after a couple of nervous weeks from my part, especially after learning that Nathan wouldn't participate (wishing him a speedy recovery!) and the top spot was well within reach for Shoma, I'm just so, so happy with his victory, and the podium overall. So well deserved.

^^^Milwaukee, right?

Love the Stephane coach camera. He's actually pretty subdued here!!!

I'm still on cloud nine... I always hoped for this to happen for Shoma and it just happened in the most wonderful way possible.

Anyway, here's non-geoblocked Worlds Sholero with different commentaries that I can find for everyone to enjoy:

Commentary by Ted Barton (ISU Youtube Channel):

Commentary by Robin Cousins and a female commentator I can't identify yet (BBC):

If you are in the UK (or have UK VPN) I also recommend watching the Eurosport commentary on Shoma's programs by Chris Howarth and Louise Walden! Chris recounted the story of when Shoma skated at an ice show in his rink, Glacier in Chicago.

Shoma's SP at UK Eurosport: https://www.eurosport.co.uk/figure-...no-stuns-in-free-skate_vid1655646/video.shtml
Shoma's FS at UK Eurosport: https://www.eurosport.com/figure-sk...-uno-wins-free-program_vid1656645/video.shtml

I love how almost every commentator (I was also informed about commentary in Germany and Italy) were so happy for him and thought this Worlds title was long overdue and well-deserved.

In the past, I used to worry about Shoma someday winning a big title like this, because ice is slippery and there are so many other factors that can make him not enjoy the win- the discourse about scores, making less mistakes than others but still significant mistakes, or something else. But this Worlds win... Shoma put out two commanding performances- one flawless, and the other almost perfect but still undeniable nonetheless. He's surrounded by happiness from his coach and team. And the crowd- I can never thank the French crowd enough. First they saved him when he was at his lowest moment, back in Grenoble in 2019, and now, they celebrated his win so enthusiastically, in Montpellier in 2022.

I know it has been difficult because of the pandemic, but Shoma deserved to win in front of a packed arena cheering for him. His performance skills deserved it, his skating deserved it, he deserved it. And I'm so happy that he got it.

Also, I thought about this when he first revealed his music selection for the FS one year ago... but of course back then I didn't really want to say anything because I didn't know what will happen in the Olympic season. But now that it's over, I can talk about it ahahaha.

To me, for Shoma to win Olympic medals and a Worlds title with Bolero, especially this particular remix of Bolero is really meaningful. Tomotaka Okamoto sang it and it has been a staple in Japanese Nationals for years. I feel every FS fan who follow Japanese figure skating (it's probably the most difficult local field to follow because of the geo-blocking and paid access requirements), they all know that the music is basically the Japanese Nationals theme song, the one Fuji TV uses in all of their FS broadcasts (Fuji TV covers the qualifying competitions for Nationals too).

I thought the music, while not traditionally or originally Japanese, represented the legacy of Japanese Figure Skating: the way the Japanese skaters all worked so hard to perform well at their Nationals, to fight for the opportunity to represent Japan at the biggest international competitions for all skaters, the top of their sport. And they have so many amazing skaters and so few spots, we can see it this year where they had two different teams for 4CC and Worlds/Olympics and still medal in all of them. And this win just cemented that Shoma is a big part of that legacy, someone who has fought hard at the Japanese Nationals for his spots and has fought hard to represent Japan the best he can, saving spots and earning spots since his junior days.

Anyway, the sopranista who sang and produced Bolero, Tomotaka Okamoto, congratulated Shoma on Twitter immediately after the FS. He said he was singing along to the music too

oh, exactly. It is in a way hard to believe he didn't have this title before, but all's well that ends well ;)
I was telling my dad (who simply saw the headlines and remembered he's my favorite skater) that I had a similarly good feeling about Worlds 2020 for him before it got cancelled. 👀 Well, who knows. But coming back to France with the live audience and Team Champéry (and his friend Kazuki, though we didn't see them together on camera much!) is such a special moment. ❤️

The French audience was a big part of making this championship so special. So glad they had an audience. What timing for it does help the skaters especially at big moments like winning your first world title and those moments where a crowd can bring you out of a funk.

It's Katherine Downes, she usually does the BBC commentary alongside Robin. This video was uploaded by me! :giggle:
