Yeah, it's probably time for JO to regroup and rethink their concept for the future. If anything I think its concept is too similar to this year's Dreams on Ice in July, so maybe those two should get merged together as a pro-competition/semi show about the preview for the programs for this season in a full-size rink, similar to Russian test skates. It would be a great event to promote the existing competitions and show people where they can watch skating, both offline and online.True. I don't know what skaters they would invite who would be the big draw. And the Russian girls were always popular. With Mao's shows, Uncle Dai's , One Piece, plus the other shows? Too much! An overly saturated market.
I know that Shoma gets disparaged sometimes for not being able to bring as many fans as his seniors do, but I think he's really the last of this group of skaters who has dedicated Japanese FS fans who are more willing to go to all events and buy tickets for him. So yeah, his appearance may not immediately fill the venues, but he keeps some of these events from dying out earlier. Like The Ice, after Mao stepped down in 2017, it probably wouldn't have had good success (before COVID) if Shoma wasn't there. Same as Japan Open which is pretty much a glorified exhibition, which he has been a staple of since 2015. But I also think that this is something good for figure skating in Japan, that the landscape of fanbase is changing, and they no longer accept really high prices for shows.
