True. I don't know what skaters they would invite who would be the big draw. And the Russian girls were always popular. With Mao's shows, Uncle Dai's , One Piece, plus the other shows? Too much! An overly saturated market.
Yeah, it's probably time for JO to regroup and rethink their concept for the future. If anything I think its concept is too similar to this year's Dreams on Ice in July, so maybe those two should get merged together as a pro-competition/semi show about the preview for the programs for this season in a full-size rink, similar to Russian test skates. It would be a great event to promote the existing competitions and show people where they can watch skating, both offline and online.

I know that Shoma gets disparaged sometimes for not being able to bring as many fans as his seniors do, but I think he's really the last of this group of skaters who has dedicated Japanese FS fans who are more willing to go to all events and buy tickets for him. So yeah, his appearance may not immediately fill the venues, but he keeps some of these events from dying out earlier. Like The Ice, after Mao stepped down in 2017, it probably wouldn't have had good success (before COVID) if Shoma wasn't there. Same as Japan Open which is pretty much a glorified exhibition, which he has been a staple of since 2015. But I also think that this is something good for figure skating in Japan, that the landscape of fanbase is changing, and they no longer accept really high prices for shows.

Not to beat a dead horse on this topic, but hopefully they will regroup and do plenty of thinking. I remember there was a group of shows taking place in (I think it was) Sapporo. There were 3 shows -- Tues, Weds, and Thurs at 2 pm. Needless to say, the attendance wasn't exactly great! This just seems like common sense more than anything. And blaming any skater or skaters for the low attendance doesn't help matters any. I think things will be ok though. People's funds for entertainment may be a little low right now too, so hopefully that improves.

It appears that Shoma may in fact get his final medal (for the 2022 Olympic team event) in Paris soon! I can't stop thinking of how cool this would be; he had his first Grand Prix gold in France and his first World Championships gold in France, so it feels only right that his last medal awarded would be in France too, as a way of rounding out his career. 🥲 I'm hoping there's an official date and time for the award ceremony soon...

Very good news! I hope the date and time allows not just for Shoma to attend but also his friends and family 🥰

Shoma's official comment issued as part of JSF statement o the Team Event Olympic medal- sounds like he will attend the medal ceremony in Paris! Hoping his coaches, friends and family can be there too.

Shoma Uno:

“I am very happy to receive this Olympic team medal. I am very proud that all Japanese Figure Skaters were able to achieve such a wonderful result, and I am very grateful to have such a wonderful opportunity to attend the medal awarding ceremony.”

Also Kodo's post of their collaboration with Shoma today. I can't get over how good Shoma's skating looks with live music from Kodo. For me it resonates differently than the usual "skating with live music" programs- I'm sure it's because they prepared it specifically for the ice show, but also because Shoma really managed to capture the energy the music has and make it as if they are a part of his skating, not just him skating "with" them. And I like that he doesn't just capture the rhythm parts of the drums, but there are also melodies in the music led by the flute and marimbas and he did well to balance it all out so that it doesn't get too repetitive.

I just find one of my other favorite parts- the way the Great Spirit "fist pumps" were done when the melodic part stops, as if "filling" it. Shoma's skating has always been the most like music to me, it makes sense that he participated in "making music" in this program.

Besides the great choreography and the magnificent skating, I really love the music. Perfect combo for him.Well done!

I really had fun watching The Ice this weekend from the paid streaming! Not going to lie, I was nervous at first, but they really did a great job. It brought me back to memories of the summer in Japan, watching incredible, beautiful skating but also having a blast laughing at the skaters' fun shenanigans.

Shoma actually had an additional part in the very last day of The ICE, during the opening- he had this really cool short-sleeved, all-black costume on with half gloves (the opening costumes were red and black), and had a skating part during the skater introductions with Satoko and Jean-Luc, the navigators. As someone who had always wanted to see Shoma and Satoko skating together, this was a small treat!

And the collaboration with Junhwan is so majestic and beautiful. It really has been a while since I see the blue Turandot costume in action, and it's still as gorgeous as ever. It also reminds me of the reason why Turandot 2.0 "clicked" to me as a program- Shoma just looks and moves like a majestic, sonorous tenor on ice, even though he's not singing. Usually "heavy" programs can come off as slow and sluggish, but I think the way Shoma moves on ice now just gives the music the beautiful grandeur it deserves. Love the "mirror" choreo, it's like a handsome sparkly prince meeting a handsome sparkly prince... The crossing ina bauers, the synchronized jumps at the ends of the rink, and then that inside spreadeagle at the end... wonderful. Opera on ice when??? Also someone said with that hair Shoma looked like a 3/4 sized miniature Junhwan and I had to laugh, because they really look like twin princes (with height differences) at the end, but you won't notice it during the skate itself because as usual, Shoma looks taller and longer when skating lol.

Also the Kodo collaboration! Both jumps are clean in the two performances of the final day, and... what else there needs to be said? Just a treasure of a performance, really. I think I have raved enough for Shoma's skating with live music, and just his power to match the energy 12 Taiko players give with their flutes, marimba and drums with his skating. And the meaningful shades of his past programs and the memories of them interweaved throughout the program, ending in the step sequence of one of the happiest moment of his career. It really now feels like the closing of the competitive chapter of Shoma and all the memories each program have, both the highs and the lows.

I don't know how The Ice will look like next year, or if Shoma will be invited or not, but it's been such a part of my summer memories (including experiencing heatwave in Nagoya, lol) and it was where I meet a lot of Shoma fans for the first time in person. What a great weekend to remember all that and enjoy the skating!

Some great photos taken by fans this weekend:

Hi everyone, I would like to ask a question. I will attend the next week's Sorcerer's Apprentice ice show. But it will be my first ice show. So, I am curious whether there would be a place to leave gifts for skater.

So many good photos come out of the Ice. It's been such a big part of Sho's summer season. I felt a little bit bad when I read that in his final speech to the audience he said "I'm not sure if I'll be here next year. I hope you'll continue to support me." WHAT?! Of course you'll be there Shoma. You ARE The Ice! LOL. It has always had a young, fun vibe. Some of the games and such are a little goofy, but they seem fun and it seems like the audience enjoys them. Loved the drumming concept. The skaters seemed to have fun messing with the drums during off-time, and I think it would have been really fun if they would have had some of the skaters play the drums during the show. Maybe next time?! I thought Ilia and Jun both fulfilled their roles in a great way and seemed to have fun...Loved their final pose here.

Glad you had such a positive experience with your streaming @rabidline. I saw many frustrated people on X saying that they missed the second half due to all the buffering, freezing, etc. And for many, it seemed like the freezing happened during the Sho/Jun collaboration! @#$%&¥€¢. :drama:

One cool thing they had this time around was special camera seats where fans with professional level cameras could sit and take photos during the show.. Maka was there and had some beautiful photos. Met her in Montreal and she has an amazing camera! Hopefully they'll post more. Glad that the Powers That Be finally realize how important it is to fans to be able to take photos of their favorites.

Oh, sorry but I won't be going there... maybe others can help? @Arriba627 did they say anything on the website?

Maybe he'll take a break from the show next year to do something totally different. It won't go anywhere so I am sure he'll go back to it again at some point if he doesn't next year. Maybe he'll do more character shows like One Piece. Imagine him playing all sorts of characters from the good guys, bad guys and even side characters. I'm suddenly picturing him playing a classic detective character with the hat and brown trench coat, a villain in a suit like Crocodile in One Piece (not actually being him though because he is Luffy), a James Bond like character in a suit...
