Shoma Uno

Ah also what I mean about Shoma being different from Yuzuru, Daisuke and Mao is really regarding their skating schedules before turning professional. Yuzuru's last full season was three years before his retirement and he took long breaks from seasons due to injuries. Daisuke retired three times- after the first retirement he had several years where he was away from skating. Mao took 1? 2? years of hiatus from competitive skating before coming back and then retiring. Shoma never really had those moments of breaks or hiatuses and was just there chugging on. It's why I think it's very understandable if he just wants to take it easy for a while.

Perhaps when Shoma does his announcement next week he'll say more of what he truly wants since that seemed to be the title. Maybe this ice show of his is a one time thing only. Maybe he might not skate ever again after that. Who knows. I know I said he could still skate when he does become an old man decades into the future, but would he really want to? Maybe. Maybe not. Even if he stops skating altogether, he'll still be him no matter what. Skating has been pretty much his whole life, so maybe he'll want to hang it up as a professional skater (even though he just started) and make something else be his world whether it is gaming professionally and/or just becoming a family man or something else. He did say once that he would like to have his own family. If he and Marin want to get married and have a child or more in the future, I'm sure he'll want to keep that private and not make that public. I don't think he would be in the spotlight forever or want to be. His grandfather is very famous in Japan as a painter from what I have heard, but he hasn't been in the spotlight a lot. Maybe he was back then before social media and a lot of TV, but he lives a quiet life now. Whatever Shoma decides will be right for him. The world is his oyster.

I'm a little bit confused by the.following post. Does this mean that this DiceTokyo is the one who will be producing Sho's show? Maybe this would make sense to you @synesthesia? Looks like the same producer of.Dai's and Mao's shows? Oh, I see on Deepl translator it says they MIGHT be the producer of Sho's show. Interesting too that the site is following Sho's instagram. The plot thickens. LOL.

Yes, it does. :) This company (FLYD) and I guess this person specifically (that seems to be the head of the company?) was responsible for directing the visual/spatial graphics shown on the large LED backdrop screens used in Beyond and Hyoen 2024. Imo they did a fantastic job as I thought the visuals in both shows were stunning. If they do something comparable for Shoma's show, it will be a treat!

There are a few stills on their website for reference.

Beyond: https://flyd.tokyo/mao-asada-ice-show-2022-i-beyond

Hyoen 2024: https://flyd.tokyo/16663f85d918c7

And this post on Dice Tokyo’s ig account talks a bit about their work for Hyoen 2024 (it says that more than 30 designers worked on the project!):

FLYD @flydtokyo took part in the production of the space and visuals. We helped to create the world view of this wonderful stage, which will expand the possibilities of ice shows and Japanese culture to the rest of the world.

We wanted to create a unique world that transcended reality to the galaxy and beyond, transcending location, time and space, so that the audience could enter into the story as if they were riding on an attraction. With the help of giant LEDs, screens surrounding the rink and the unique ‘beautiful reflections on the ice’ of an ice show, a team of more than 30 FLYD designers from home and abroad have created an extended world beyond the rink and an abstract world set to music at times.

We have created the film with an awareness of the need to create ‘a picture that looks good no matter where or what scene is cut’ when the people on the ice are carrying the visual world on their backs.

The scenes in which the wonderful sound and lighting team collaborated with the visuals gave a wonderful sense of the three-dimensionality and depth of the stage, further increasing the sense of immersion in the story.

Ah, I can see your point there. It initially sounded to me like you were talking about differences in personalities and motivations, which is what I replied to:

he just doesn't seem like someone who has enough of an ego to produce HIS own show, and definitely not enough of an ego to make it a solo show. Not that it's a bad thing to have an ego, but I just think Shoma is a very different person from his seniors, be it Yuzuru, Mao Asada, Daisuke Takahashi. He's probably the most similar to Shizuka Arakawa in mostly minding their own business but can still really skate a mean performance whenever needed.

I agree that it would have been understandable if Shoma had wanted to take a break after years of non-stop competing. :)

yikes i've missed a lot! i moved cross-country a few weeks ago and started a new job but i ran here when i heard shoma announced his ice show! so excited for him! i wish i could go but sadly there's no way i could ever afford it :(
Please don't get discouraged! Even if you know you can't make it this year, you could still save up some money and travel to see him another year! Traveling to see Shoma is worth it! (Yes, even if he doesn't understand you or you have to sit in the back row! 😂)

I also can't wait to see his ice show!!!

I hope your move went well! And don't worry I think Shoma fans as usual will try to share as much as possible, hehehe.

Yeah no worries. I do think the end of each of their careers contributed to their perspectives, on what they want to bring in the professional world, and it shows in their shows. And in my very subjective opinion, I just think Shoma ended his career in a place where there are less regrets for him compared to his seniors, because he was lucky enough to be able to have a relatively have a good health throughout his competitive career and even though he was not free of injuries, he was able to manage it on a certain level not to be actively hampered from it.

But in a way I think it's what makes what Shoma has planned interesting to me. Most of the time, the first shows of a retiring skater turned professional will go back to their roots, their past programs, the things that are recognizable as theirs. Will Shoma do the same? He was certainly not in a hurry to create a new program the first summer after he retired. And of course, there were suspicious hints here and there especially in his paid membership. Ahhh March 19 cannot come sooner!!!!

In 2013 Shizuka suggested to Dai he should do a solo show after retirement (this was in a Friends+ interview), but he was pretty wary of the idea and of course he has never done it and, as we know by now from his interviews and the shows he does, he enjoys above all to create and collaborate with others, be it with accomplished performers from different fields like he does in Hyoen (in the upcoming production he co-stars with Takahisa Masuda, who is a bigger name than him) or with much younger and – because of their younger age – more athletic (at least in terms of jumping prowess) skaters than him like in Kassouya. And while producing Kassouya means on one hand creating a space for himself to perform, it also means in equal measure using his popularity to provide opportunities for skaters that otherwise wouldn’t have them and in Kassouya every skater is given the same importance – he does not stand out more than the others. He has even stated that he might very well give up the Kassouya production duties to someone else (like Kana or Kazuki) in the future. Mao’s shows were very much collaborative efforts too. Yes, she was the star, but her cast played a very integral part and each of them got their own sections to stand out in. In this aspect, I would say Mao’s shows were not that different from Shizuka’s, who, while she is also the star of Friends on Ice, has always used her self-produced show to give others a platform to take center-stage as well (like Shoma in 2017).
Yeah, but like, it took several years for Dai and Mao to reach that point of their professional career to have that sort of show like Kassouya and BEYOND which gave opportunities for younger skaters to take center stage.

Daisuke's previous shows like Christmas on Ice and Ice Explosion were definitely not about younger skaters (IE is about ice dancers, which I agree is rare in Japan, but also coincides with his ice dancing debut, so), and Dai still holds the title role for Hyoen. I also think his decision to finally have Kassouya starting from 2024 with younger skaters was likely influenced by certain ice shows he watched who managed to pull a big production with active and younger skaters instead of relying on pro skaters who are more Daisuke's peers- showing their potential for shows beyond skating their own programs even while active.

Mao's first post-competitive show was literally named Mao Thanks Tour, and while I do think it's great opportunity for her cast skaters, it's about her in the center, which is fair enough as the purpose for the tour was Mao reaching out to her fans all over Japan. BEYOND and Everlasting33 definitely expanded from that.

Ironically, Shoma did have a sort of show that highlights other skaters to take center-stage before he even retired and even without having his own agency making that show: The ICE, after he took over (more like forced to take over, considering he's not even an IMG client) from Mao. It was clear that Shoma was very much pushing all the other younger, fellow active skater cast to have their highlight moments in the show aside from him, to his own fans' annoyance at times. Many of the younger skaters and his peers, also from overseas, got their first opportunity / invitation for a Japanese show at The ICE first, before getting invites to other shows. It turned a bit sour at the end especially after 2022, but I think Shoma definitely played a role for the show making it as far as it went after Mao retired and left it.

And I still remember perfectly Shoma expressing his surprise and insistence for Kazuki to be invited to PIW when he found out Kazuki has not been invited yet back in 2022... it's rare for an active skater to think about the opportunities his fellow skaters get without having his own show, but it was definitely in his thoughts.

The very first shows Dai was actively involved in organising and that he chaired were the Kobe charity shows that took place annually from 2011 to 2015 to raise money for disaster relief after the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami (which, besides, featured many young, not yet established, skaters). The first one he chaired, starting after retirement, was a revival of Christmas on Ice (starting in 2014), which he "inherited" from Shizuka, followed by Ice Explosion - both shows initially following Shizuka's Friends on Ice blueprint relatively closely. In 2023 we saw Dai bring his own ideas and personality to Ice Explosion in terms of structure and content, which he then took further in Kassouya (with regards to casting choices and marketing strategies Kassouya took inspiration from Mao’s tours and Prince Ice World according to himself btw, stating that his ultimate dream is to establish his own company that would offer a platform for young, active skaters who have not (yet) made it to the top, as well as for retired/professional skaters who did not achieve the highest level of competitive success, but are talented performers).

My initial point wasn’t to debate who arrived why and when at what show concept or how long it took them to come into their own and develop their own ideas, though. My point was that there can be a variety and a combination of reasons why a person would want to produce their own shows, because you said that “there is nothing a show can prove that Shoma hasn't proven during his career” and that you feel that “he had a competitive career that doesn't necessarily needs him to create this show to achieve something he wanted or convey something he wants to tell to his fans”.

E.g. the joy of performing and expressing yourself / your own ideas / having artistic freedom and expanding your artistic repertoire can be one of them, giving other (not necessarily younger) skaters a platform or “just” having fun collaborating with others can be another and the desire to help people in need can be yet another one. Everyone is different and has their own motivations, and the same person can also realise different shows with different goals in mind. I guess I don't quite understand why you think Shoma is different from Yuzuru, Mao and Dai and yet much more like Shizuka when we don’t know all of their individual motivations aside from those they disclosed.

Since I don’t want to hijack Shoma’s fan fest to compare him to others or talk about other skaters’ shows, I’m going to bow out at this point, though.

Why is that ironic? I think this could exactly be one of the reasons why he would want to stage his own show. :)

Because most skaters who do this already has their own shows under their own agency or management, hehe. Then again Shoma usually says whatever on his mind straightforwardly so... I think it was good that he seemed to be proactive or at least influential enough whether directly or indirectly for the shows he's in to look for his peers to cast, for their experience as well.

Sho's Instagram Story shows that he will be doing an Instagram live on March 20 at 8:15 p.m. Japan time. Haven't seen any other details. That would be 6:15 a.m. for me if I'm not mistaken. Maybe he'll answer some questions about his show.

I noticed this as well! Sadly, it will be 4:15 am my time. :( That will probably be a little too early for me to handle...

I am wondering if Shoma's show (or the Sho Show) will have a gaming theme. Imagine him in a labyrinth, fighting for survival as a pawn in a game. Think I am getting carried away...
It seems like an obvious theme for the Sho Show, right? Yet I really don't think that's something he's going to do. For one thing, Yuzuru already covered some similar ground in his recent Re;Pray shows. I watched a stream of one of those shows out of curiosity, as it had heard it had a video game-related theme. The theme centered around one's choices in life being like a game and what it would be like if we could undo those choices and select different ones (similar to a game). I felt as if there were certain autobiographical allusions within certain choices; I distinctly remember a choice of whether to continue or quit. If Shoma were to try something like that, I'd like to see it be more of a multi-player game than a single-player game, something that shows how each of the NPCs and PCs in his life helped him reach the Amethyst Palace and obtain the Universal Amulet of Gold! Okay, now I'm the one getting carried away here, lol! 🤣

I guess we'll find out in less than three hours!!!

Likely, since he'll have live media obligations after the press announcement today at Tokai TV Nagoya. The figure skating reporters are also going to Nagoya so I think Shoma is in Nagoya this morning, hehehe.

All this, and he also has to fly to Boston too! So it's a tight schedule I think
