@Arriba627 oh, yes, Trusova-Medvedeva-Kihira alone are worth the price of admission, but it also has a lot of skaters I loved last season, even if one or another of Yuzuru’s ankles gives out on him. Plus, that’s my chance to be a captive audience for ice dance and learn to love it. It’s just to bad it is a shoulder year for the national team, an i’ve missed VM and Osmond era & they pushed Messing out to free up slots. :)

30. Why do you love Shoma?

His body is incredibly built, both stocky, heavily muscled in the hamstring and buttocks, core is powerful, and he has flexibility that does not seem to damage the explosive power. One of my colleagues at work, was like, ‘meh, figure skaters, they don’t look human’, but she saw Shoma, and agreed that he does look human. To me that’s important, to see incredible athletic achievement from someone who does not look extraordinary.

As far as his aura goes, he comes across as the opposite of the ‘energy vampire’ sort of people who suck the life out of you but just being around. Win or lose, Uno manages to project a colossal energy outward making me want to achieve. What I read is passion, ardor and try hard attitude that is incredibly attractive in a role model, and I don’t care that I am far older.

Finally, be that by a virtue of translation, or not, once in a while Uno says things that stick with me, beyond the usual athletic talk of 110% percent and whatnot.

All and all, the guy makes me feel by far better about the world when he wins.
Lariko, thank you. Wonderfully stated. You put into eloquent words what many of us have probably felt.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO THE DBC MEMBERS FROM JAPAN!

I wish Shoma for a successful and rewarding season.
And I hope him to eat oishii niku and oishii gohan in Russia.

It’s great to see Shoma’s 3A4T in new year’s eve.
I can’t wait to see him at The Ice.

I think it's because of the 2026 Winter Olympics announcement (Congratulations Milan and Cortina D'Ampezzo and Italy!) but my Twitter timeline has resurrected this 2018 Milano Shoma moment:

https://twitter.com/shoma_unono/status/1143317515134574593

My heart still aches and swells whenever I rewatch it. The crowd started clapping when the female choir sang their part while Shoma was doing his transitions, the rolling threes to the 4T2T just as Carreras' voice picked up again... and the roar from the crowd after it... is just amazing. And Shoma still holding his posture and character up until the very end, that little stumble... this skate hurts my heart but it's so, so special.

Looking back at it, this is probably the performance that made me his fan. (This was only the second competition I saw him in since I'm a rather new FS fan, don't judge me! :D) As heartbreaking as it was to watch, I was so impressed with how he kept himself together and didn't give up. If you watched the first and the second half of the program separately you would never guess it's from the same competition.

lariko, I just wanna say, your post is a lovely and heartwarming read to begin the month of July.

Thank you for sharing with us, especially just as jerrymouse said, July 1st is the official beginning of the "New Year" of FS in Japan, so your words feel so timely to me.

Just when I think I've seen every photo of Sho in existence, one shows up where I say "Where did that come from?!" So cute! Maybe it's from Itsuki's book?

SO ADORABLE! I ran over to show my mom, and she noticed that Shoma has the same intense look on his face that he does now sometimes. Good catch, Mom!

As for figure skaters not looking human, hmph, what do we look like, robots? :sarcasm:

He’s been honing those adorableness and intensity skills for a lifetime ;)

Also, Shoma’s updated JSF profile for the 2019-2020 season! https://twitter.com/yawning_shoma/status/1145531166042157057?s=21

I initially saw Shoma in his Turandot costume during the winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. My biased self could not resist how cute he looked.
When he started to skate I was like wow he moves big for a small guy. I love how he looks sleepy but has tremendous energy and power.
His disheveled hair is chaotic but so adorable at the same time. The way he yawns unabashedly and dozes of in certain occassions make me feel giddy.
The way he and his brother show their bond is also heartwarming.

The best part was I got to check his interviews I love the way he answers. A mixture of innocence, cluelessless and nonchalant shade at time he might or not be aware.
Shoma's face for me is so expressive it shows how he feels. And I love how he expresses it.

*It looked fun and I thought it is the time to share it.

Edited to add: The KMSV account (where Demi-san, Shoma's physio/personal trainer works) tweeted from Russia :agree: I guess either Demi-san is there (he may also be the one who's been translating English for Shoma) or another trainer from KMSV.

Translation of the tweet: "A wonderful environment with an assortment of Russian skaters ♪( ´▽`) The organization and structure are so practical, so I see why they can have a standard of such strength!
You can get a lot of motivation here as a trainer too!" (i.e. as a trainer as well as a skater)

Whew -- very relieved to see a trainer is with him -- hopefully Demi-san. All those muscle massages and stretching are good. He speaks some English, but I'm not sure how much...Thx for the translations.

Oh my gosh -- look at little Shomita practicing his cross rolls! How cute can he be?! It shows he's 7 years old. He seems so tiny for 7!

Awww, with that yellow oversized jacket Shoma really do look like a very cute baby chick  this reminds me, when I was looking up for cafe options in Nagoya (will be going there next month!) there's a really cute baby chick pudding sold by Cafe Gentiane at Nagoya station. They even name the pudding Piyorin, which reminds me even more of piyo piyo Shoma: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wwr3ApjUTM
