I discussed this with one of my students who is French and has seen "real life " ski mountaineering.
The whole point in the Alps is that people go up, climbing, hiking mountains on ski, and sometimes just hiking up when it's impossible to ski... and then, once up, they go back down the slopes with their skis... but this takes hours... sometimes a whole day. A lot of people practicing this sport are even retired people she said. Very very fit retired people
So, if they had done something similar, on a "real natural course' and if it had been some sort of mass start marathon experience, I could see the beauty of it. But as a 3 minute sprint, gather in 6 athletes heats going through that silly diamond and steps... yeah.. NOT GOOD
I guess that sport will be on the program in 2030, considering the French love it
It's called Skimo. Apparently quite popular in Italy and I recall reading how tickets were in high demand before the OG started. I was not one of those interested in watching.
One of the men at my sports club apparently trained in that in the Swedish( I think, couldn't quite ID his Scandinavian accent) army, and was quite scornful of this "quick taste" version of it. He compared it to getting on a horse, making it go over one jump, then reining the horse in and bolting back around the fence to the starting point again. He said he'll watch it again next time if they make it a longer course, have a mass start, put obstacles in the course, etc. If they combine it with biathlon and have everyone carry rifles as well as skis and shoot at targets at intervals like he had to do in the army, he'll be glued to the TV watching every minute.

Thanks for the short name. Much more convenient. I don't know the sport so I just used the name given to it on the olympics website.
Regarding tickets : from what I have gathered, tickets for all Olympic events go quickly... I guess the way to find out if the sport gets a lot of interest in how much tickets sell for. I heard that a couple of guys from Canada spent 21K for tickets for the last 3 games. I don't know if they included their airfare and hotel or if it's just the games... but I wouldn't pay 21K for 3 hockey games.... especially not knowing ahead of time if Canada would make it to the finals... and they barely got there (tough quarters and semis). In any case, you'd have to pay me to attend a Skimo event.
