Slow Motion Jump Editing (AKA: Sam's Jump-a-ma-tron)

Because it was a beautiful jump! A lot of people criticize her jumps and I wanted to show that she doesn't always go on the wrong edge. I guess after reredading my OP it may look as though I was saying she doesn't deserve to get edge calls ever but that was not my intent. I just meant on that particular jump she deserved full BV. She does go on the wrong edge though sometimes as do others and should get called when she does.

It was a beautiful jump, I agree. I prefer Yulia's jumps over, say, Elena's, due to the flow.

I know you weren't saying she shouldn't get edge calls, ever. Just that it sounded like you said her jump at CoC was given an edge call, and people criticized it, ect. And then you realized it was quite nice. Hence why I thought you confused the protocols with the GPF protocols.

Were there really people saying she always goes on the wrong edge? Maybe for her lutz in the past, but her flip?!

Thanks @Sam-Skwantch and @sabinfire for putting in the effort. Love it!
I honestly worry about Satako now, it will be interesting how her jumps progress. But she's already nearly 17, I hope she'll be fine. It would be a pity to lose her.
And well, Liza's jumps look fantastic, as expected.

Initially, I tried making my first video with Kiira Korpi from Europeans (since Sam had already done one for Liza), but after about 10 minutes of editing her jumps in slow-mo and reverse, they looked so small and unimpressive in comparison to some of the other stuff we've been seeing. The hand down on the 2A didn't help matters for slow-mo replays. She's a beautiful skater and it's a shame she had to WD after the SP.

I think my second attempt at this came out a little better than the first.

Elena Radionova Jumpamatron (enable 720p HD)

Brilliant!!! Glad to see the jumpamatron catching on.

When the jump goes in reverse it really shows the edge and where the balance of a jump is coming from. Great job. The music gave me a Detroit tech house vibe

I think the jumps with a view looking dead on and not from any side angle are the best ones but it shows how a jump in a different spot of a rink can skew the look that a tech panel has.

It doesn't take much for a term to go viral nowadays.

That's interesting. Although I have seen London Grammar in Detroit, they are a British band (although this version was a Tourist remix, who is also London-based).

I love it but....why is your quality so much better than mine? I'm just not very good at computering I guess. :slink:

I'm not sure. I'm guessing it has something to do with the original source we are pulling from, perhaps? I would assume with Sony Vegas and a modern PC capable of handling HD video editing, we would be roughly on equal footing. How are you handling the conversion of files into Sony Vegas, and what settings are you using to render the finished product?

If it would help, I could send you an original HD clip from the sources I use, try playing around with it and see if you still have the same issues. If so, maybe I'd look at your rendering settings next.

I think I will give it a go at Joshua Farris next (may have it posted tonight). I know you already posted a clip of Josh earlier in the topic (as with Liza) but Liza and Josh are my two favorite skaters who are currently competing, so I really want to play around with your Jumpamatron idea with my favorite skaters of the moment. :)

Thanks so much for creating this thread... it's a great idea! Please let me know if I can help in any way, but keep in mind, I just started using Sony Vegas less than a week ago and you are probably far more savvy with the program than I...

How about Jason's 3A and 3F-3T from his short program at Nats, and one of Adam's 3As and 4Lzs from Nats? I think it would be interesting to see "good" jumps from people who are not generally known as good jumpers.

Here's a thought: At the end of programs, a lot of the jumps are already shown in high quality slowmo. Those could be edited and slowed down even more. that way, there would be less blur. But maybe you are already doing this?
This is a very interesting thread. Seeing all these jumps, both good and questionable, is informative for someone who is learning how to call edges, etc.

can we do that for spins as well?? layback spins awould be great, karen chen for example

The slow-motion replays at the end of programs definitely tend to be the best to use for this sort of thing (although whether that is 'high quality' or not depends on the source). The replays usually show close-ups that weren't available during the program, and the jumps already being in slow-motion makes it easier to edit. It all depends on the elements you are trying to highlight and which camera angles are available of that specific element (not all are shown during the post-program slow-motion replays).

For the sake of comparison, I used the same NBC clip posted earlier in this topic of Joshua's 3A at real-time speed (which isn't the best quality out there of this program but is still pretty great) and tried to see what I could come up with.

From Joshua's FS at 2015 Nationals, the 3A in slow-motion, then super-slow-motion, then reverse slow-motion, and finally normal speed:

Also, I loved how you had the Schindler's List music playing.

Thanks! I wanted to post a Josh video here last night, but I couldn't find the musical inspiration appropriate for a video. Nothing fits better than Schindler's List, in my mind.

Hey Sam, here's some Zhenia love!

Evgenia Medvedeva Jumpamatron (720p HD)

She doesn't get much height on these jumps but the flow is just so recognizable. It's as if the program would suffer without the jumps. I kind of wish she would have stayed with the original look she had with the black outfit from earlier this season but that really is of little importance. She is getting it done this season
