Sofía and Asaf finished 4th out of 19 in the FS, with a score of 101.97. This meant that they climbed to 3rd position overall, with a score of 170.32.

Unfortunately, due to the time difference, I wasn't able to watch the Free Dance LIVE. However, I have now started playing catch-up on the archived livestream, so here is the sort of comment I would have written about the Warm-Up if I had been watching LIVE:

Sofía and Asaf running from the curtain to the ice holding hands. Asaf gives an enthusiastic wave to the audience just after appearing. Sofía enthusiastically waving to the audience for the whole journey!

Sofía wearing a metallic silver dress. Very hot! 🔥 Asaf wearing black trousers and a white gi top.

Being first to skate, they were first to be focussed on. When the camera came to them, they were skating parallel to the boards, and then Asaf swapped from being on Sofía's right hand side to being on her left hand side when they moved more into the middle of the rink. And they started doing some leg stretches and then arm stretches, but made it all look like choreography! Very clever!

After the camera left them, any time we saw them creeping into camera shots, it was only very briefly. So, we didn't get to see them doing anything.

The next time we saw them properly was in the last minute of the Warm-Up. And, unsurprisingly, they were just going around the ice holding hands. You don't want to do anything exerting just before you do your programme.

Right, here we go

:cheer: ALL THE BEST SOFÍA AND ASAF!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

And here is the sort of comment I would have written about their programme if I had been watching LIVE:

I couldn't help laughing when Mark told us that the story is about a guy who created an AI, and then it became smarter than him, and...

Come on! Who are you trying to kid? No matter how you wrap it up, it's yet another "Exogenesis Symphony" programme.

Not that I am complaining. I love it when they do this style of programme.

Everything about it was beautiful. I couldn't take my concentration off them. Which is why I haven't been able to write anything specific about what they did.

The only thing I could possibly complain about is that the edits to the music were really rough. To the extent that they did kinda spoil what was otherwise a faultless programme.

Interesting finishing position.

Hard to tell whether Asaf is exhausted or disappointed coming off the ice. I hope it is not the latter, because he shouldn't be.

Sitting waiting for the scores, you can see that Sara Hurtado is just about ready to burst with excitement!

Asaf and Kirill are bemused by the wait. As it goes on, Sofía is getting very nervous.

They go into 2nd in the FS, and the lead overall.

Sara is clearly angry with the scores. And Sofía is not happy either. Asaf and Kirill are not sure how to react, so they just smile.

Well, forget the scores, the skating was great!

:cheer: WELL DONE SOFÍA AND ASAF!!! :cheer:

The comments from those watching LIVE started off with the inevitable complaints about it being an "Exogenesis Symphony" programme. First up was @4everchan:

To which @auser replied after the programme with a simple:

Followed by @jorge2912:

My friend in Australia, @anonymoose_au, doesn't so much complain about people using "Exogenesis Symphony", but rather that they all go for Part 3 of the suite:

Unbeknownst to her at this stage, she was in for a pleasant surprise further into the programme.

Except that I already knew what they were skating to, I would have thought the same as another member in Australia, @lileychristie:

To which our resident video list archive compiler @labgoat replied:

To which there were two replies. First from @anonymoose_au:

And secondly from @lileychristie:

@labgoat had commented this just after @lileychristie's first post:

Veronica Lake, sorry, @Lamente Ariane said something very scary:

This got two replies. The first was from @labgoat:

And the second was from @anonymoose_au:

@anonymoose_au also commented something I thoroughly agree with:

Getting back to the skating, and @auser commented:

@Lamente Ariane suggested a better story for the programme:

To which @labgoat replied:

And I thoroughly agree with the latter point! (I love Vangelis!)

Just to complete the story, after the next partnership didn't get through, a lot of members were annoyed. And @4everchan tried to lift the mood by saying:

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

Sofía and Asaf finished the Free Dance 1.18 points behind 3rd position, Mariia IGNATEVA / Danijil Leonyidovics SZEMKO (HUN), and 0.73 points ahead of 5th position, WANG Shiyue / LIU Xinyu (CHN). The three partnerships are at the head of a group of 6 partnerships covered by 4.67 points, stretching down to Giulia Isabella PAOLINO / Andrea TUBA (ITA) in 8th position, 3.49 points behind Sofía and Asaf.

Overall, Sofía and Asaf were 13.18 points behind 2nd position, Holly HARRIS / Jason CHAN (AUS), and 1.49 points ahead of 4th position, Wang / Liu. Sofía and Asaf are at the head of a group of 5 partnerships covered by 2.69 points, stretching down to Utana YOSHIDA / Masaya MORITA (JPN) in 7th position.

Finally! After a decade of wishing that Spain would have two Ice Dance slots at all the Majors, it has finally happened. Which means that both Sofía / Asaf and Olivia / Tim can go to Sheffield, Assago and Prague.

I am absolutely delighted for Sofía and Asaf. They really deserve this.

I am so proud of them.

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

A couple of things to comment on, I'll do it in different posts.

The first thing is the elephant in the room, the FD.
I was surprised when I found out the music they choose for this season, because people around SK try to be original with their musics and they went for "warhorses", as very used music is known around here. It's not my preference but, as I'm not the one skating to it (or to anyother thing), I just wait until I see the results.

In the RD, they really worked on the presentation: they looked like they spent the whole summer dancing in Ibiza and took a direct flight to Beijing just for the competition. They made their own program with Ricky. I can see that. OK.

The FD is different. Re-reading the comments that CaroLiza_fan added in the previous post (I agree with most of them), came to my mind a comment that I heard long ago in an interview to Antonio Najarro (spanish choreographer, working this season with Chock&Bates!). I'm paraphrasing but he said something like the most important thing in a dance show is ability of the dancers, the music and the choreo to convey, to transmit emotions to the audience. Without emotions, there's no show and emotions are inherent to human beings (and animals, but they are not iceskating fans). How to transmit human emotions when talking about AI? We are talking about robots, they have no emotions. And they are doing the program even more difficult, without an external story known by the audience (like the movies pointed out in the comments).
In short, they have a very difficult challenge in that FD. But they seem to love it and we are still at the beginning of the season, they have some time polish it. We'll see.

Anyway, I love to see them on the ice, we are going to see them in all the important competitions this season and I'm team Sofía&Asaf no matter what.

No disertation here, this is just for the fans to enjoy: Half an hour of interview with Sofía, Asaf and Sara. It's in Spanish and subtitles are available.

The video is part of a series "What I learned from my coach" Made by CSD (a public institution in charge of sports politics).
Asaf speaks in Spanish too and he does it well (a bit broken here and there, like my English :cheeky:).

Sofía and Asaf finished 6th out of 10 in the Short Dance, with a score of 66.09.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread during the Warm-Up:

Here is what I wrote when they were being introduced:

I wasn't able to watch the programme LIVE due to watching Formula 1 Free Practice 2, but I posted a comment when I watched it after the F1 had finished:

The first comment came from my good friend in Sicily, @elektra blue, when they were being introduced:

@EdgeCall noticed something that I would never have noticed (I'm a bloke, after all! ):

The final comment came from our resident video archive list compiler, @labgoat:

Looking at the Protocols, I was right in saying that there were no problems at all. All the GOE was positive, ranging from +0.86 for the final element, the Roller Lift; to +2.40 for the penultimate element, the Choreographic Rhythm Sequence. Apart from three 0's (one from Judge 3 for the Pattern Step; and two for the aforementioned Choreographic Rhythm Sequence), and two +3's (one from Judge 3 for the
Twizzles; and one from Judge 3 for the aforementioned Roller Lift), al the Judges marks were +1 or +2.

Sofía and Asaf are currently 1.71 points behind 5th position, Leah NESET / Artem MARKELOV (USA), and 0.70 points ahead of 7th position, Charise MATTHAEI / Max LIEBERS (DEU). The three partnerships are the bottom three partnerships of a group of 5 partnerships covered by 3.83 points, which is headed by Milla Ruud REITAN / Nikolaj MAJOROV (GEO) in 3rd position, 3.13 points ahead of Sofía and Asaf.

You know, if Sofía and Asaf have a good Free Dance, they could get onto the podium. And they can afford to really go for it, because there is only one partnership that is close enough behind them to be a threat.

So, let's hope they do have a good Free Dance and climb up.

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

The Senior Free Dance is due to start tomorrow at 11:20:00 AQTT (06:20:00 GMT / 07:20:00 BST / 08:20:00 CEST / 09:20:00 MSK). So 10 hours from now.

Sofía and Asaf will be the 5th partnership to start. So, fifth and final partnership to go in Group 1.

The Group 1 Warm-Up is due to start at 11:20:00 AQTT (06:20:00 GMT / 07:20:00 BST / 08:20:00 CEST / 09:20:00 MSK). So 10 hours from now.

Sofía and Asaf are due to start at 11:56:50 AQTT (06:56:50 GMT / 07:56:50 BST / 08:56:50 CEST / 09:56:50 MSK). So 10h 36m from now.

Sofía and Asaf finished 6th out of 10 in the FS, with a score of 99.52. This meant that they remained in 6th position overall, with a score of 165.61.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread during the Warm-Up:

Here is what I wrote when they were being introduced:

And here is what I wrote about their programme:

The only other member to comment about them was @auser, who replied to my good luck message with this

Looking at the Protocols, and I spotted something curious. There is one element with negative GOE and negative Judges marks; and one element with an issue noted. But they are not the same element!

Unsurprisingly, the element with negative numbers was the Twizzles. They got GOE of -1.02; and Judges marks of three -2's and four -1's.

However, it was the fifth element, the Curved Lift, that had a note next to it. Asaf had Sofía up in the air for too long!

The opening element, the Starionary Lift-Rotational Lift was without doubt the best element of the programme. It had by far the highest GOE, at +3.07. And because it had by miles the highest Base Value of the programme, at a massive 10.90, it remained by miles the highest scoring element of the programme, at an even more massive 13.97. It also had the best Judges marks, with five +3's and two +4's.

For the remaining elements, the GOE ranged from +0.83 for the final element, the Choreographic Spin; to +1.66 for two elements - the fourth element, the Midline Step Sequence, and the seventh element, the Choreographic Character Step Sequence. Apart from two +3's (from Judge 7 for the aforementioned Choreographic Character Step Sequence, and from Judge 4 for the aforementioned Choreographic Spin), all the Judges marks for these seven elements were +1 or +2.

I should note, only the partnership that finished in second position, Milla Ruud REITAN / Nikolaj MAJOROV (SWE), had a programme with a higher Base Value than Sofía and Asaf's programme. But, they were where they should have been on both Technical Elements Score and Programme Components Score.

Sofía and Asaf finished the Free Dance 2.28 points behind 5th position, Leah NESET / Artem MARKELOV (USA), and 2.14 points ahead of 7th position, Charise MATTHAEI / Max LIEBERS (DEU).

Overall, Sofía and Asaf were 6.83 points behind 5th position, Neset / Markelov, and 2.84 points ahead of 7th position, Matthai / Liebers.

If ever you wanted an event that showed that there was a set hierachy in Ice Dance, this was it. The overall finishing positions were identical to the positions after the SD. The only thing that stopped all three sets of results being identical was that the Browns were 2nd in the Short and 4th in the Free. But, that was to be expected, because their Free had a lower Base Value than the programmes of the partnerships around them.

In short, although these were their lowest scores in both segments and overall in over a year, Sofía and Asaf did all they could do.

So no need for Asaf to beat himself up over his mistake in the Twizzles.

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

Sofía and Asaf finished 7th out of 26 in the Short Dance, with a score of 68.81.

My first comment about them was actually about 40 minutes before the competition started:

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread during the Warm-Up:

Here is what I wrote when they were being introduced:

And here is what I wrote about their programme:

I don't know what happened, but nobody else commented about them!

Looking at the Protocols, there was not a single negative number to be seen! The GOE ranged from +0.86 for the final element, the Roller Lift, to +2.40 for the penultimate element, the Choreographic Rhythm Sequence. Apart from a +4 from Judge 2 for the second element, the Midline Step Sequence, all the Judges marks were in the +1 to +3 range.

Sofía and Asaf are currently 0.32 points behind 6th position, Marie DUPAYAGE / Thomas NABAIS (FRA), and 0.35 points ahead of 8th position, Carolane SOUCISSE / Shane FIRUS (IRL). The three partnerships are the top three partnerships in of a group where 11 partnerships are covered by 6.79 points, stretching down to Zoe LARSON / Andrii KAPRAN (UKR) in 16th poisition, 6.47 points behind Sofía and Asaf.

For those that are wondering, Isabella FLORES / Linus Colmor JEPSEN (USA) were in 10th position, 1.10 points behind Sofía and Asaf.

If they have a good Free Dance, Sofía and Asaf have a chance of breaking out of the group and possibly climbing even further. The partnership that is currently in 4th position, Emily BRATTI / Ian SOMERVILLE (USA), are 4.10 points ahead of Sofía and Asaf. But the podium positions are probably out of reach. However, they also need to have a good Free Dance because there are 9 partnerships right on their tails, ready to overtake them if they get the opportunity.

So, let's hope they have a good Free Dance!

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

The Senior Free Dance is due to start at 18:00:00 CET (10:00:00 MST / 17:00:00 GMT). So 8 hours from now.

And that is as much as I can tell you, as the Time Schedule PDF for the Free Dance is not working. (The PDF for the Men's SP earlier in the day is working, so the Free Dance PDF will probably appear later).

Looking at the Protocols, there was not a negative number in sight! It would have been completely positive were it not for a solitary 0 from Judge 4 for the final element, the Choreographic Spin. All the other Judges marks were in the +1 to +4 range.

The GOE ranged from +0.67 for the sixth element, the Dance Spin, to +3.65 for the opening element, the Stationary Lift-Roller Lift. The latter already had by miles the highest Base Value of the programme, so it remained by miles the highest scoring element of the programme.

Sofía and Asaf finished the Free Dance 0.78 points behind 4th position, Jennifer JANSE van RENSBURG / Benjamin STEFFAN (DEU), and 0.07 points ahead of 6th position, Marie DUPAYAGE / Thomas NABAIS (FRA). Sofía and Asaf finished 5th out of 14 in the Short Dance, with a score of 70.59.

Unfortunately, I was not able to watch the Tallinn Trophy as I was concentrating on the Bosphorus Cup, the British Championships, and the Formula 1. And I haven't had a chance to watch the video yet. But, when I do, I will write a comment and edit it in here.

Sofía and Asaf are currently 2.44 points behind 4th position, Olivia SMART / Tim DIECK (ESP), and 1.28 points ahead of 6th position, Natacha LAGOUGE / Arnaud CAFFA (FRA). Sofía and Asaf are at the head of a group where 3 partnerships are covered by 2.27 points, stretching down to Victoria MANNI / Carlo ROETHLISBERGER (ITA) in 7th poisition.

Of course, with Olivia and Tim one position ahead of them, Sofía and Asaf will be going all out to catch them and overtake them! And if they do, there is a chance they could climb even further, as Olivia and Tim are at the bottom of a group where 4 partnerships are covered by 4.32 points, stretching up to Natalie TASCHLEROVÁ / Filip TASCHLER (CZE) in 1st position, 6.76 points ahead of Sofía and Asaf.

Whilst the leaders are propably out of reach, 2nd position is a possibility if they have a really good Free Dance. The partnership currently there, Jennifer JANSE van RENSBURG / Benjamin STEFFAN (DEU) are 4.86 points ahead of Sofía and Asaf.

Sofía and Asaf also need to have a good Free Dance to make sure that they don't drop any positions, because there are two partnerships behind them within striking distance.

So, with all this in mind, let's hope they have a good Free Dance!

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

Overall, Sofía and Asaf finished 1.36 points behind 5th position, Pate / Bye, and 6.43 points ahead of 7th position, Natacha LAGOUGE / Arnaud CAFFA (FRA).

Oh, they were so close to finishing in 4th position overall. But, they will be delighted with the scores they got. Not only did they achieve their second highest ever SD score, but they also achieved their highest ever FD and overall score.

Under normal circumstances, I would say that this was a great result to take them into Nationals. However, Olivia and Tim won the 🥇 Gold Medal, finishing 11.22 points ahead of them. And that is bound to worry them.

But, they already have their slots at all of the Majors, so at least there isn't that pressure on them at Nationals this season. And their scores in Tallinn will give them a boost.

No video uploaded yet 😞

Sofía and Asaf finished 2nd out of 4 in the Short Dance, with a score of 72.12.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread during the Warm-Up:

And here is what I wrote about their programme:

Nobody else was commenting.

Looking at the protocols, there were no issues at all. The GOE ranged from +1.12 for the third element, the Pattern Step Sequence, to +3.30 for the fourth element, the Choreographic Rhythm Sequence.

The aforementioned Pattern Step Sequence got 0 from Judge 4; +1 from three Judges; and +2 from Judge 1. But if you take it out, all the Judges marks for the remaining elements were in the +2 to +4 range.

Sofía and Asaf are currently 7.06 points behind 4th position, Olivia Sophie SMART / Tim Frederik DIECK (CAT), and 7.81 points ahead of 3rd position, Philomène SABOURIN / Raúl BERMEJO (MAD).

I think it is safe to say that, with the way the gaps are after the Short, everybody is locked into their positions. So, this is the perfect opportunity for everybody to go all out and try to achieve new Absolute Personal Best scores!

So, let's hope Sofía and Asaf can have a good Free Skate and do just that!

Sofía and Asaf finished 2nd out of 4 in the FD, with a score of 118.05. This meant that they remained in 2nd position overall, with a score of 190.17.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread during the Warm-Up:

Here is what I wrote when they were being introduced:

And here is what I wrote about their programme:

Looking at the Protocols, there were no negative numbers. However, there were some seriously big positive numbers!

The GOE ranged from +1.44 for the fifth element, the Curved Lift, to +4.22 for the opening element, the Stationary Lift-Roller Lift. Not only did this latter element have the highest GOE in Sofía and Asaf's programme, but it had the highest GOE of the entire field! And because it had the joint highest Base Value of the entire field (along with Olivia and Tim's sixth element, the Curved Lift-Curved Lift), it became the highest scoring element of the whole field in it's own right!

Apart from two +5's for the aforementioned opening element, all the Judges marks were in the +2 to +4 range.

Sofía and Asaf finished the Free Dance 10.66 points behind 1st position, Olivia Sophie SMART / Tim Frederik DIECK (CAT), and 17.9 points ahead of 3rd position, Philomène SABOURIN / Raúl BERMEJO (MAD).

Overall, Sofía and Asaf finished 17.72 points behind 1st position, Smart / Dieck, and 25.71 points ahead of 2nd position, Sabourin / Bermejo.

On the one hand, they will be disappointed that it wasn't a closer competition in either segment. But, they will be delighted to have achieved new Absolute PB's in both segments, and overall.

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

Now that Nationals are over, the focus will turn to the Majors. The first of which starts in 4 weeks time, with the European Championships.

I can't wait!!!

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

The Group 3 Warm-Up is due to start at 18:08:00 EET (16:08:00 GMT / 17:08:00 CET / 19:08:00 MSK). So 10h 8m from now.

Sofia Trophy Senior Short Dance: Results; Protocols

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2nNnmwETuA

Sofía and Asaf finished 1st out of 8 in the Short Dance, with a score of 76.04.

Unfortunately, I was not able to watch LIVE. However, I have now watched the video of Sofía and Asaf's programme, so here is the sort of comment that I would have written about their programme for the competition thread if I had been watching LIVE:

First set of Twizzles were beautiful, but second set were out of sync.

Everything else looked flawless.

Maybe it is my memory playing tricks with me, but everything seemed a bit slow compared to what I remembered. But, with Europeans in a few days, you can't really blame them if they are conserving themselves.

They still comfortably win the Short Dance.

:cheer: WELL DONE SOFÍA AND ASAF!!! :cheer:

Looking at the protocols, there were no issues at all. The GOE ranged from +1.44 for the final element, the Roller Lift, to a whopping +5.00 for the fourth element, the Choreographic Rhythm Sequence. Ironically, despite getting by far the highest GOE of the programme, the Choreographic Rhythm Sequence was actually the second lowest scoring element of the programme, because it had the second lowest Base Value of the programme. The first three elements had by some distance the three highest Base Values of the programme and, hence, remained the three highest scoring elements of the programme.

Apart from two +4's for the aforementioned Choreographic Rhythm Sequence, all the Judges marks were either +2 or +3.

Sofía and Asaf are currently 7.16 points ahead of 2nd position, Mariia PINCHUK / Mykyta POGORIELOV (UKR), and 7.94 points ahead of 3rd position, Samantha RITTER / Daniel BRYKALOV (AZE).

And this is a new Absolute PB score for the Short Dance. 3.92 points higher than their previous best from Nationals a month ago.

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

I don't like counting chickens, but with this size of a gap, nobody is going to challenge them for the 🥇 Gold Medal. So they can concentrate on having a good Free Dance to try to get some more Absolute PB's to take them into the European Championships in a few days time.

So, let's hope Sofía and Asaf can have a good Free Dance and do just that!

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

The Senior Free Dance is due to start at 17:05:00 EET (15:05:00 GMT / 16:05:00 CET / 18:05:00 MSK). So 9 hours from now.

Sofía and Asaf will be the 8th and final partnership to start. So, fourth and final partnership to go in Group 2.

The Group 2 Warm-Up is due to start at 17:40:30 EET (15:40:30 GMT / 16:40:30 CET / 18:40:30 MSK). So 9h 35m from now.

Sofía and Asaf are due to start at 18:08:30 EET (16:08:30 GMT / 17:08:30 CET / 19:08:30 MSK). So 10h 3m from now.

Sofía and Asaf finished 1st out of 8 in the FD, with a score of 117.16. This meant that they remained in 1st position overall, with a score of 193.20.

Unfortunately, I was not able to watch LIVE. However, I have now watched the video of Sofía and Asaf's programme, so here is the sort of comment that I would have written about their programme for the competition thread if I had been watching LIVE:

Never noticed that shiny thing in Sofía's hair before. Is it new, or am I blind?

Stunning. Just stunning.

There was one moment after the vocals kicked in when they were out of sync, but I have a feeling that it was part of the choreography and was supposed to be like that. Other than that, I didn't notice any synchonicity issues.

They win the FD, and the title.

:cheer: WELL DONE SOFÍA AND ASAF!!! :cheer:

Looking at the Protocols, there were no issues at all. The GOE ranged from +1.28 for the fifth element, the Curved Lift, to +3.84 for the opening element, the Stationary Lift-Roller Lift. And because the opening element already had the highest Base Value of the programme by miles, it remained as the highest scoring element of the programme.

All the Judges marks were in the +2 to +4 range.

Sofía and Asaf finished the Free Dance 9.11 points ahead of 2nd position, Mariia PINCHUK / Mykyta POGORIELOV (UKR), and 13.51 points ahead of 3rd position, Samantha RITTER / Daniel BRYKALOV (AZE).

Overall, Sofía and Asaf finished 16.27 points ahead of 2nd position, Pinchuk / Pogorielov, and 21.45 points ahead of 3rd position, Ritter / Brykalov.

Their Free Dance score was just a whisker lower than their Absolute PB for the FD at Nationals last month. However, achieving a new Absolute PB for the SD meant that they achieved a new Absolute PB for the overall score here.

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

And we don't have long to wait to see them in action again. They will be doing their Short Dance at the European Championships in Sheffield on Friday.

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:
