Sota Yamamoto

Thanks rRainbow for your translations and Surimi for the analysis, I completely agree with you.
I think his strategy in the SP worked and provided some pointers in what to do now: Lower difficulty a bit, and focus on landing the jumps, and getting his levels

A little clip of Sota was posted today by the Japanese Skating Federation twitter: https://twitter.com/skatingjapan/status/1344146195292291073
According to this tweet, he says: In 2021 I will work hard to show you much more growth and progress
Seems they're doing an end of the year countdown!

I think you were right about Sota running out of stamina in the FS, Rainbow - doesn't this passage from number bunshun imply that?

I am very happy to hear Sota say that he had no injuries and ills this season! I am not too happy with Onishi's leadership for Sota as he's been struggling with jumps (like years back!), but this is definitely a plus point in his favor.

Also, Komichi's blog has featured some comments about Sota from Narumi Takahashi...?

"I've come to this competition with a desire to skate in the last group of FS. I was happy I made it into the final group, and the opportunity was a dream come true for me. This season I stayed injury and illness free, but I had different type of anxiety and frustration," he reflected.

Thanks for sharing ^ ^
Kazuki and Sota are skating at the Nagoya Festival tomorrow, and I really hope something leaks
No wonder Sota is anxious when the Fed are quite impassive towards him... in spin evaluations for instance, he deserves way better than what they give him. Well, this can't be helped, so I'll keep hoping for him to stabilize his jump landings to get some more love from them.

I found the video where Narumi Takahashi comments on Sota's FS at Nats:
I think she says he was a serene kid, and praises his 4S? I just watched the first minute or so of the Sota content before I decided I didn't understand it much 😁

Narumi's comment on Sota on Asahi "Kiss & Cry" article on Dec. 24. https://digital.asahi.com/articles/..._requesturl=articles/ASNDS5KNNNDQULZU01S.html

About seven years ago, I made a habit of asking him who was in middle school, “How are you doing?” whenever I met him. And he always answered, “Couldn't be better!”

Why did it become this way? That’s because people around him wanted him to become cheerful, since he was very shy. They must have hoped that by talking with me, whose only merit was being perky, he would be positively influenced.

He is 20-year old now, and gets to appear in talk shows. I’m surprised to see his growth. He will enter the upcoming Nationals. He is Sota Yamamoto senshu.

When I practiced at Chukyo University rink, Shoma Uno senshu (23) and Satoko Miyahara senshu (22) shared the ice with me. My impression of Miyahara senshu was that she was quiet, but a person of even fewer words than Miyahara senshu was Yamamoto senshu.

Yamamoto senshu followed the greeting ritual without any fuss and gave me a proper response every time. He had a very genuine heart and was willing to do what he was told to do. Such attitude has led to his technical improvements in skating.

Nagakubo sensei who coached him valued the basics, and at every morning practice he made his students do basic drills. Unlike jump training, it is monotonous, and ordinary students might have given up, but he followed through the drills without hesitation.

Yamamoto senshu’s strong point is his great skating skills. His one glide is so huge that it makes you wonder if his boots are electric motorized.

That shows his diligent effort rather than talent. No matter how many times he was injured, he came back stronger. The way he glides on ice reflects his indomitable fortitude.

He is currently taking a leave of absence from Chukyo University. When I was an active skater, I also took a break from college to focus on skating. It takes courage to take a break from school, as it places pressure on you. Knowing he is going through a trying time, I want to root for him.

This year he changed his coach so his jump forms have not been solid yet, but it happens to anyone who changed a coach. Kenji Miyamoto’s choreography has helped bring out a bit of his seductive aura in his performances. He just has to hit jumps, and his placement will go up naturally.

Thanks a bunch!! I love Narumi's description of Sota's strengths - I really like his glide as well. He's unique, even when his jumps aren't there.

Maybe it would be good for Sota to find something besides skating he could focus on, even if he cannot return to school for now. As they say, it you want something too much, you are in danger of being overmotivated and overthinking, and messing up because of that. But of course, easier said than done...

Anyhow, here are some fun Sota-centric Nagoya Festival pics were shown today, posted by none other than the esteemed and ever-kind Mr. Yamamoto in his instastory  I'm voluntarily a stone age creature without social media so I only see these photos through retweets, but Kirara, I think you'd appreciate how Sota is always hanging around Kazuki, like here - https://twitter.com/takeyo55098794/status/1346126020659671040/photo/3 The boys look so young here, it's almost like a throwback!

As I suspected he would, Sota skated to Dark Eyes. He may revive 'Beautiful' for next season, but I hope he doesn't and sticks with Eyes as gala... though I'd miss the cute facepalm spin, hehe.

In this video “Naru’s Room” Narumi Takahashi (right) expresses her sentiments on men's SP performances at Japanese Nationals. She is assisted by Yumi Asano (left), sports writer.
Translated transcript of Sota part starting 50:57: https://youtu.be/K6Mkwn1OXe4?t=3057

50:57
Y: We received many comments from fans. In fact, we’ve just received some comments on Sota-ku, ah, sorry, Yamamoto senshu. I call him Sota-kun since I’ve been watching him since he was little. Some fans cried with joy over his making it into the final group. Some commented he looked taller.
51:09
N: Naru cried too. He made it into the last group. Huh, you’ve got such comments?
--Yes, we’ve received comments that they were moved to tears by his joining the last group. This season, Sota-kun is taking a break from college, and I interviewed him as a “4Years” reporter, he talked about his Olympics aspiration, the music he chose for this season and so on.
51:30
[showing a photo of Sota] This is when he was a kid, perhaps around the National Middle School Championship.
51:33
N: I am a Sota-kun fan, I mean I have been rooting for him for a long time. Yesterday, I wrote a column on Sota in my regular series, “Through the Eyes of Narumi Takahashi”. I would like viewers to read it, if possible. I will be glad if more good points of Sota-kun are appreciated even for just a bit. Ahh, he has so many good qualities.
51:58
Y: I really love his SP. Especially the part where he quickly touches his leg.
N: I like how Sota-kun started his short program. Sota’s opening move!
The music started, like, before I knew it, he glided across the ice and reached near the rinkside. It was as if he had performed some magic tricks on me. It’s like his boots were powered by motors.
Y: I re-watched his step sequence probably 100 times. And yet, I don’t get tired of it [laughter]. Over and over.
N: I know what you mean! No doubts.
Y: Choreography is really nice, so if he can nail all jumps his SP will be awesome.
N: It will be absolutely great!

Thanks a lot! It's good to know there are famus skaters who admire Sota's skills.

Btw what is this document?
It doesn't look like a Kokutai entries list to me. Is that a Nagoya-specific thing then? Maybe the Aichi competition that Ryuju spoke of?

January 10 is Sota's birthday - Happy 21th Birthday, Sota! May you have a successful and joy-filled year ahead of you. :cheer:🎂🍾🎆

It sounds like his new online talkshow with Taichiro was aired today/yesterday. This blog entry has some fun photos from it - https://ameblo.jp/kmn-psn/entry-12649297498.html - as well as some Sota highlights from the Nagoya Festival (high kick and Sota practicing the group dance on land). I have no idea what was said, but at least the boys don't look sad about Nats anymore. ^ ^

It is a list of Aichi team participating in Kokutai:
Team manager for men/Jr men is Yoriko Naruse
Men: Sota & Ryuju
Jr men: Haruki Honda & Haruya Sasaki

Team manager for ladies/Jr ladies is Hiroko Hongo
Ladies: Rin Nitaya & Yuhana
Jr ladies: Chisato Uramatsu & Rino Matsuike

Aichi prefecture athletes formation ceremony for Kokutai took place on Jan. 15. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2syuLWSYjMo&feature=youtu.be

61 athletes will represent Aichi at Kokutai which will start on Jan. 27. This year Kokutai will have no spectators and will be live streamed on Kokutai channel.

Kokutai starts tomorrow, without spectators. Good luck to Sota and Team Aichi! :cheer: I hope we get to see some photos.
Also, I finally got started on uploading some Sota videos into the Media section, yay. I've put it off for too long already. :coffee:

Ouch... Terrible skate for poor Sota. He missed all jumps, so 43-something sounds fair enough. No Onishi in KnC but his old coach Naruse, but it might be because Onishi is from Osaka and not Aichi.
He really needs to do something about his mental problem with jumps. His season is quickly going downhill, and I am getting Gracie Gold vibes, and that would be a career path I absolutely don't want for Sota.
I still have hope for him. His jumps failed him once, and he overcame it to become a star. Now he's in the same position again: he's lost to Taichiro, so I hope that ignites whatever the move to Howa awoke in him years back, and that he enters the same path as back then. It's all in his head (and his hands) now.
Good luck in the free, Sota! Less thinking and more muscle memory might help, perhaps...

Leaving this here - Sota's comments after the SP, someone please help with translating?
Google translate says:
This is the first time I thought "I want to stop in the middle" during the match. In a mental sense, my usual practice was not done in 100% condition. As an athlete, it's natural for me to inspire myself and do my best for tomorrow, but I don't have that feeling right away. "But the match has already started, so I'll survive to the end. The match with my senior (Hino) may be the last, so I feel it firmly and I can do it without giving up so as not to pull my legs. I think it's a good idea. "

Sota is onto a very good point: He must not let that frustration, negativity, maybe despair, get to him. I think a way of dealing with that is battling on and on, and not giving up. Not more exhausting trainings (definitely not the 4F at this point... why did he start the SP with a F anyway?), but more resilience to competition environment and jump failures.
Call me crazy but during the program, when Sota messed up his last jump part as well, I could feel his frustration and the feeling that he'd like to stop. It was palpable. Or maybe I'm just too invested in this unlucky, brave kid's skating  He's probably thinking right now that he's such a disappointment to the Federation, his coach, and his fans. But I think that most are just keeping their fingers crossed for him, and are hoping for him to stand up again. He did it once, and he can do it again. His fans definitely won't think any less of him because of one botched season.

One more Sota artcicle, I think it contains one of the quotes above plus some others, like one about his friendship with Ryuju ^ ^

Sota... 😢
I'm also intrigued by his layout - was that 2F supposed to be 4F? If yes, it's understandable he'd be very nervous.

At least it was nice seeing 'coach Sota' with Ryuju on the K&C: https://twitter.com/nekodaifuku1/status/1354737924667887618

Wishing the best of luck to Sota in the free tomorrow!

ETA: having now watched Sota's performance, it didn't seem to me he was going for a quad - looked like the 2F was intentional. I wonder if he's injured... If he is, hope it's something minor

Sports Hochi interview with Sota after SP: https://hochi.news/articles/20210128-OHT1T50294.html

Sota Yamamoto took SP 18th. "I am worried about whether I can make it as an athlete..."

He spoke candidly about his emotional pain, “I have been extremely nervous. Before this event I was filled with negativity and thought ‘I won’t be able to do well,’ and I couldn’t take control of my mind or my body on ice. For the first time I felt like quitting in the middle of my performance. Along the way I was skating in despair, feeling I could only do that kind of skate.”

Right before his skate, he changed the opening 4F quad (*see ETA) to 3F, but he popped it into 2F and the next 3A turned into 1A, and these jumps gave him zero points. Two of his three spins were invalidated. “I am devastated. Since the NHK Trophy, little by little I have become aware of the difference between me and other skaters. I somehow managed to stay positive and dispel various anxieties until the Nationals. But after it was over, I got to be honest with myself, and realized that I had fallen to a new low. I was mentally drained. To be honest, I’ve started questioning my abilities as an athlete.” The Japanese Nationals in which he ended up placing 9th was a turning point for him. Since then he has been unable to regain his will to fight.

Ryuju Hino is on the same Team Aichi in the inter-prefectural competition, and Hino will retire at the end of this season. Yamamoto said, “He has been my good senpai since I came to Nagoya in my first year of middle school. When I got injured he was good to me and I am grateful and indebted to him in lots of different ways. This competition may be his last, so I will be pleased if I can skate the FS without giving up.” Going into the free on the 29th, Yamamoto seems to be trying to inspire himself.

ETA: (as surimi pointed out, the original text says "a quad", so 4F was corrected to a quad. Sorry for the confusion.

Wait, wait, wait, he was actually going for the 4F originally!? 😳
I don't know, man, I mean... I can understand why he would think that training a new type of quad would be a good way to get out of the post-nationals slump. But, on the other hand, the 4F is such a difficult quad, you'd need to be in the right mental and physical shape to train it, and I wonder if it was really the right moment for this. I also wonder if the fact he's downgraded his layout a lot for Kokutai is because he is exhausted from the quad training.

In any case, it seems he did better today! He did 4S (fall) 3T 3A-1Eu-2S 3Lz-2T 2A 3Lo-2T 3F
He skated to 'In This Shirt' (!) and scored 127.10 in the free, total score of 170.48.

He was smiling in the K&C with 'coach Ryuju' 🥰
